Nora certainly shouldn't be complaining about aging, at least not in Victor's opinion. To him, even all joking aside, the fact that she will age is absolutely delightful - it means that she's alive and living, not dead due to a supposedly incurable disease or frozen in a state of suspended animation.
And not in whatever you want to call the state that he's in either - when Nora asks about his willingness to give that up, he looks surprised by the question, and he frowns as he considers how to explain it to her. Finally, he looks at her hands, his eyes sad as he says, "Nora, I can't touch you." Looking up to her eyes, he adds, "And by how many years will I outlive you? How long would I be alone?" But there's more to it than even that - his eyes now turn to the window, "And for the past ten years I have rarely been outside except while wearing this suit - only a few times on purpose. During a cold snap in the middle of winter - and not every year - I can bear to be outside during the coldest part of the night. Not during the day, not in summer when there are birds and flowers and insects and life." He turns back toward Nora, "You might argue that perhaps I should move to a colder climate, but in the places I could survive without this suit there are no flowers, no trees, no insects - there isn't even snow. Only ice. This is not living, Nora. I am not giving up anything." Not anything he thinks is worth having, anyways. The drawbacks of his condition are simply too severe.
When Nora expresses her desire to catch up on the science of the day, he's quick to nod and says, "Then I will bring you many things to read - science, medicine, and technology have increased rapidly. But don't worry - atoms still behave the way that they always have, and we still use test tubes and beakers." Which is his way of saying that she'd be hardly useless in a laboratory even if her knowledge is ten years out of date.
But alas, now she is reminding him that time is not standing still as they talk, even though it certainly feels like it and he really wishes that it would. "I would prefer to spend every moment of every day here with you, my beloved, but if I did then I wouldn't get anything else done. Every moment I am away working is a moment closer to the time when I will have all the answers I need. But if you do not wish for me to be busy, then I am not busy - not now, and not in the future." Well, unless he's right in the middle of something he can't interrupt, but otherwise if Nora wants more time with him he can always arrange it. It would slow him down, but if Nora thought it was worth it then he'd slow down.
When she next speaks of dinner, his expression softens - such a normal, everyday thing to worry about! "Do not worry about dinner, my love - Shanice will take care of that. And when you're feeling better, you do not need to worry about money - we have enough for this..." he says, indicating the room they're in. Even if she hasn't seen the size and beauty of the rest of the house, this room alone indicates that she didn't wake up a pauper. Hopefully that's enough to satisfy her worries about money, because he'd rather not bring up things like bank robberies and selling out to other criminals right now.

Nora’s expression grew soft as sad welled in Victor’s eyes at her question, thinking that perhaps she had been right. Only to discover that she had been gravely incorrect at his first utterance. She clasped her hands together, listening with utmost attention to her husband’s words. As his eyes moved away from her, a hand rose up to cover her mouth to somewhat hide her sorrow and horror at her Victor’s struggles with his condition.
“Oh Victor…” was all she could manage in response, reaching out to rest a hand on his arm.
As the conversation moved away from that more morose topic, the sadness slowly shifted into contentedness. Victor had agreed to bring her many things to read, which delighted her to no end. She simply could not wait to see what miracles of science had been achieved over the ten years that she had been missing. Though it seemed that she would not have to relearn the fundamentals, a fact for which she was grateful. She would not be worthless in a laboratory then with the advances in technology.
Nora chuckled at Victor mentioned how he would love to spend every moment with her. “I know, dear,” she replied gently. Her happy expression only deepened as Victor mentioned that if she did not wish him to be busy, he would not be. “Ah, but does not absence make the heart grow fonder?” she asked with dramatic formality. Nora blinked as the realization dawned on her that the absence had already been too long for Victor. “What I mean to say is that you should come visit me whenever you wish it, dear, but don’t if it’s a bother. Oh drat…you know what I mean, don’t you, Victor?”
Her frets about dinner were swiftly addressed as well with a softening of her husband’s already very warm expression. Nora was quite unaccustomed to being cooked for. Usually, it had been her to do most of the cooking in the Fries household. She often made sweets as well for Victor to take to work or for dessert. She quite enjoyed cooking.
“Oh yes, forgive my foolishness, Victor,” Nora sighed, shaking her head at herself. “I’m being silly and worrying about every little thing. I’ll adjust soon, I’m sure.” Nora grinned at Victor. “Don’t let me keep you from your work. You’ve much to do now after all!”
It was then that an idea struck Nora. She kept her features schooled, her grin softening to a warm smile. Yes…it was a ravishing idea, to say the least. Nora was very tickled with herself for thinking of it. Before she knew it, a hint of her inner mischief worked its way into her smile, making her seem not unlike a child who was sneakily shaking and testing Christmas presents under the tree.

Seeing his wife's reaction to his words, Victor can't help but give her hand a reassuring squeeze. He'll not take back anything he said or reassure her that it isn't so bad - at best he can say that he's had ten years to get used to it. But people are simply not designed to live at the temperatures he does. Yes, he is in good health and seems poised to live for a very long time yet, but though he only cares so much what anyone thinks of him - including an expert - it's not like he didn't hear it when they told him of the possible effects that his condition is having to his mental health while he was in Arkham Asylum. What he took from that is that the added isolation is probably not very good for him. But if that's true, even if he cared enough about himself to do something about it, what can he do about it? Other than cure his condition, which hadn't been a top priority for him until just recently.
But, quite eager to move on from such thoughts, he speaks no more of his condition for the moment. Instead they can speak of other things, like their mutual reluctance to part company even though they both understand that it's necessary. Though of course he can't help but feel strongly about that often quoted adage about the absence of one you love. "It does," he says softly, not attempting in the slightest to match her overdramatic tone, which only underscores just how serious his answer is. But when she realizes what she's said and hastily attempts to clarify, however poorly she phrases her words, when she says that he knows what she means he lifts a hand to her cheek and simply says, "I do." She doesn't need to explain anything - he feels the same way.
His expression is anything but bothered as she apologizes for her worries. "And perhaps I am being silly and foolish for not wanting to say goodbye when we both know that I ought to be attending to other things. But after so many years without the simple pleasure of being able to simply talk to you, I don't wish for it to end. But perhaps I can be content if I remind myself that I will also be able to talk to you tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after," he says, giving her hand another gentle squeeze before he almost reluctantly asks, "Is there anything that you need before I go? Or anything else that you want me to bring for you the next time that I come?" Not that he's reluctant to do anything that Nora could ask, but the very question indicates that he's about to leave.

A wry smile curled up onto Nora’s face as her dear husband mentioned that he might be the slightest bit foolish for lingering when he clearly must have other important matters to attend to. She leaned into his hand a bit, though she knew that doing so would only want to make him stay more. And, perhaps some selfish bit of her did want him to stay. To take him away from his worries. But she would see him again. It would not be like last time. Where, as he laid her to sleep, she had wondered if she would ever wake to rest her eyes upon him again.
“Oh, I don’t think you’re foolish at all, dear,” she said softly.
Their thoughts were practically on the same wavelength. It had not been uncommon in the past. Both of them knew what had to be done. If only they could have foreseen Boyle’s treachery. But there was no undoing the past. No going back to what was. Nora would do her best in the here and now. However strange and new it was. She had Victor by her side. That was all she required to move forward.
When he asked her if she needed anything else or anything she wanted him to bring, her immediate response was to wave him away.
“Victor, please. You’ve done enough for me now,” she said, shaking her head with an affectionate smile, “Although if you do happen to find my old coat…no rush though. After all, I am in no hurry to go anywhere. I have to get better as quickly as possible so I can visit your lab.”
Nora grinned mischievously, dead set on seeing it at some point or another. Why wouldn’t she be curious? Her science background had already given her enough of an excuse to want to see it. The fact that her husband could be there without this suit? That was priceless. While it was lovely to see him, even as he was now…Nora longed to see the man beneath the suit.
Her expression softened by degrees as she looked into her husband’s brilliant blue eyes. “I’ll miss you. Know that I love you so very dearly, Victor.” Reaching out, her delicate fingers made contact with the dome protecting her husband from the relative warmth of the room, stroking it as if it were his cheek. “So very dearly…”

Unfortunately for Victor, he literally does have to leave. Perhaps not right this instant - he could probably get away with not attending to the things that need his attention right now, but then again the longer he waits the more of his attention they will need when he eventually gets to them. He's already spent three days doing little else besides worry about the fact that his wife wouldn't wake up, but now that he's been reassured that she's now perfectly fine he has a lot of things to do. His men need to be paid, his longer term laboratory experiments need to be checked. His medium term laboratory experiments are... well, either they've been waiting for him to check on them for quite some time or they're ruined and need to be done again, depending on whether their need for his attention was time-sensitive or not.
As for short-term experiments, he finds that he honestly can't recall whether he had any of those running or not - what was he doing when he'd received word from Shanice that Nora couldn't be woken up, even intentionally? He can't quite remember - he only remembers instantly dropping everything and coming here. Probably because whatever it had been that he'd been doing had instantly become meaningless to him when his heart had been struck with fear for his wife. But whatever it was that he'd been doing, it's not time for him to return to it - and he'll no doubt remember what it was as soon as he looks at his notes at his main workstation.
When she asks for her coat, he nods and promises, "I will attempt to locate it." It should be in storage along with the rest of Nora's things that he'd held onto. Of course, it had been a rather chaotic time when he'd done that, and it has been years since he actually looked at her things (though they're stored safely enough he trusts that nothing has happened to them).
Perhaps he should bring back not just her coat but all of the clothing he's saved. Of course, it's all a decade out of style, but he believes that doesn't matter for certain items of clothing? And perhaps she has sentimental value for some of it? The task of sorting through all of it is certainly not something that he would even begin to know how to do, but he imagines that it would give Nora something to do for a while and that she would appreciate being able to have whatever it is that she decides to keep. Well then, he will surprise her with her old clothes as soon as he has the chance to retrieve them - probably not by tomorrow but surely within the week. It would be pointless to bring the other things, as this house is fully furnished and he doesn't intend for her to stay here any longer than it takes her to recover - it isn't safe. So the rest of her keepsakes are better left in storage - perhaps someday he'll be able to provide her with a more permanent home for them, but for the moment he can't.
Wishing to ease the discomfort of his departure, he once again waxes a bit theatrical as he bows his head and adds, "Farewell, my lady - I shall return to thee on the morrow." And having said that, he forces himself to stand and head to the door. It's a lot more difficult than it looks, but it's for the best.

“Oh thank you, dear,” Nora said as Victor promised to try to locate her coat. She let out a soft little sigh as her eyes lingered on Victor’s visage, trying to memorize the new features of her husband’s face. It was very much still her Victor. But also not. She wanted to know the new Victor as intimately as she knew the old Victor. That would merely take time, but at long last, she could say that they now had plenty of that. Still, every second with Victor felt precious given her newfound lease on life.
Smiling and giggling softly as Victor once again waxed a touch theatrical again, Nora bowed her head and blew him a kiss as he turned to leave. Nora watched him walk toward the door, settling down into her almost too plush bed, eagerly awaiting tomorrow. Oh, but she couldn’t sleep. Not yet! For, as her husband left and Shanice returned to check on her, Nora set her plans into motion.
The Next Evening
Nora felt badly for making Shanice do this for her on such short notice, but at last it was done. She had wanted it done for the next time Victor came to see her. Now she kept the surprise tucked neatly by her side under the covers where Victor would not immediately be able to see it. Now, she merely had to await his arrival.
Nora settled back into the pillows, stretching her limbs, stiff from the gratuitous amounts of bedrest that she had been getting lately. Mmm. She beginning to feel rather stir crazy. Oh well. All part of the recovery process, she knew that somewhere in the back of her mind. What she wouldn’t give to even do some of the simplest exercises though. Ah well. All in good time.

Having spent so much time away from his usual occupations, Victor finds that he's even further behind on everything than he suspected. Even though he doesn't need much sleep, he hasn't caught up on it all by the time the next evening comes around. Still, he'd never prioritize his work over his wife, so of course he's going to take the time to visit her anyways. In fact, he arrives quite early on in the evening, which is a sign that she's been on his thoughts. It's more normal for him to arrive later in the evening because when he works he tends to get extremely focused upon what he's doing and loses all track of time. Instead he's been watching the clock, too interested in seeing Nora again to focus too deeply onto anything else.
"Good evening, my love," he says when he sees her as he opens the door. Closing it behind him, he asks, "Have you been well?" Of course he knows that she must be because Shanice has been giving him updates every few hours, and he trusts that she would have told him about anything concerning. Still, that's different from hearing his wife's own self-report.
When he arrives he has a few things in his hands and arms, and when he enters the room his first focus is to determine where each of the items should go and to put them there. The first is a single yellow rose in a glass vase - this he puts on the nightstand where she can most easily see it. The second is her coat, draped over his arm. He knows that she doesn't need it yet, but she wanted it and so whenever she does need it she'll have it available. He places it on the back of the chair, since that seems to be the most convenient place for the moment.
The third is a plain styrofoam container, which he places directly on her lap, "This is for you, dear." Inside of it she'll find her favorite dessert from her favorite restaurant, which he remembered - he was pleased when he discovered that it's still in existence and he hopes that they haven't changed their recipe very much over the past ten years. He's still holding one last item, but he'll wait before handing it to her - it's not something that she'd easily recognize, as proper tablet computers didn't exist a decade ago. But now that he has the rest taken care of he moves the chair closer to her bed (Shanice prefers to give Nora more space than he cares to) and seats himself, waiting expectantly for Nora's reaction to the dessert. He knows that bedrest is not pleasant, so he hopes to do what he can to make it less tedious.

To describe the feeling that swept over Nora when Victor walked in through the door would be impossible to capture fully in words. She was filled with such a loving warmth. Delighted to see him again so soon.
“I didn’t expect you home so soon, Victor,” Nora said, a delighted smile on her face. “Oh yes, Shanice takes such good care of me. I admit to a little bit of stir craziness though.” Tugging on her blankets lightly, Nora’s smile fades into curiosity, seeing that her husband had arrived with some items in his arms.
The first that she takes note of is a yellow rose that her husband delicately places onto her nightstand in a glass vase. Nora’s features softened at the gesture. So sweet. As she returned her gaze to her husband, she took note that he had, in fact, found her coat after all of these years. Oh, she hadn’t meant that he needed to find it immediately. She wondered how much more of his time that she had taken from his work.
Tilting her head slightly as he set a styrofoam container in her lap, she opened it to discover her favorite dessert, a gourmet cupcake with the most delicately whipped frosting. Victor remembered. Lifting her hand to her heart, Nora smiled softly to herself. Did she really deserve to be pampered this much? Taking the plastic fork from within the container, Nora looked up to her Victor.
“Oh, Victor, you shouldn’t have. I feel like you’re spoiling me,” with a laugh as light as bell, Nora took a bite, her eyes widening a bit. “Oh, it’s just as I remember it. Goodness, you think it might have changed after all this time…” Taking another bite, Nora savored the sweet taste. Pausing for a moment, she looked over to him.
“And how about you, dear? How are you?”

How much time had it taken him to find Nora's coat? Almost none, actually. That's the beauty of having men to assist him - he can get things done by simply saying a few words. Of course, he'd found one of his most trusted men for this particular task - it's important to him that the location where he as Nora's things stored remains a secret. Yes, they're just things, but they're Nora's things. Fortunately, it's a lot easier to hide items whose main value is sentimental than it is to hide things that are of more interest to more people or people themselves.
When Nora states that she's feeling stir crazy, Victor nods, but he doesn't know of a better way to address that problem than to say, "At least now you are getting better instead of worse, though perhaps that makes you all the more anxious to get back on your feet." Bedrest is not new to her - during the final stages of her illness, before she'd been frozen, she'd been confined to her bed. But then there had been little reason to anticipate that she'd ever be well enough to do anything more than that.
Having settled himself into the chair, it's with extreme pleasure that Victor watches Nora discover what's inside the box. He's quite certain that Shanice is feeding her very well, but as the saying goes there's always room for dessert and there is no substitute for someone's favorite dessert. "If any woman deserves to be spoiled by her husband, it is you," he states - he'll not deny that he's spoiling her because that's exactly what he's doing. In fact he's doing it on purpose.
Enjoying watching her eat it even more than he would enjoy consuming anything himself - food has become both less important and less interesting to him since the accident - when she asks him how he's doing he takes the question seriously. Rather than giving her the standard statement that he's fine, he instead he admits that, "I've been... distracted." But, not wanting her to be concerned, he adds, "But that's to be expected and I'm sure it will ease with time. I've been looking through my old research, now looking at it from the perspective of my situation instead of yours. Soon I'll have several directions to investigate."

“Perhaps a little, but I more than happy to be improving,” Nora replied to her husband’s comments on her stir-craziness. As Nora took another bite of her dessert, she savored the delicate taste as her husband admitted – rather unabashed – that he was in fact spoiling her. Oh, that was so Victor. He would never even try to deny or hide it from her. Though, she supposed those years of separation gave him something of license to spoil her. If only for a little while. Nora would set him straight soon enough. For now, she’d let him have this. Not that she didn’t enjoy it to some extent as well.
However, as Victor mentioned that he had been rather distracted lately, Nora paused in eating, glancing over to him, concern already plain on her face. But Victor soon allayed the worst of her fears, but not all. Moving the dessert to her nightstand for the moment, Nora nodded to him, smiling. “Do keep me apprised of your progress. And don’t hesitate to let me know how I may help. I can at least research through some books without straining myself.”
“But perhaps I have a cure…not for your condition,” Nora quickly amended, “But for your distraction. Or it might worsen it…Though I rather hope not.” She shuffled her hands under the covers to produce a pale blue, rather small and unassuming box. “For you,” she said, extending it out to him. “I had Shanice procure it for me, since I cannot leave myself…and I asked her to keep it a secret…I hope you won’t mind.”
Within the box, Victor would find a simple silver locket with a snowflake engraving. Within that, a picture of Nora, taken by none other than Shanice. It was a close-up with her hair fixed nicely, and a very warm, loving smile.

When Nora says something about helping and reading some books, Victor is almost about to say something because that would be a perfect transition into one more thing he has for Nora, but she continues to speak and suddenly is saying things he certainly didn't expect. Instantly curious, he sets that thought aside for later and instead gives her his full attention.
When she pulls a small box out from under the covers, he's quite surprised - how in the world did she manage to get him something? After all, she's confined to her bed... Ah, Shanice! Well, he doesn't fault the woman for keeping secrets from him. Of course, this does mean that she probably left Nora alone for awhile and he doesn't like that thought. Then again, he does have certain level of trust for the woman and doesn't imagine that she'd have been talked into doing an errand if she wasn't completely certain that Nora would be fine. He'll likely talk to the woman about it later - an actual talk, not necessarily to discipline her.
But that's later - now he's surprised, enough that it takes him a moment to actually take the offered box. In complete silence he opens it carefully, pauses almost reverently when he sees what's inside, and then with just as much care picks up the locket and examines it - after a moment seeing that it is a locket, and then opens it with as much delicacy as his gloved hands permit. Seeing the photo inside, he finally says something, "Oh, Nora..." But that's all he can say - he's been rendered speechless. In fact, anyone else might have difficulty in telling whether or not that's a good reaction or a bad one, but Nora would know the difference - he's absolutely captivated by it.
After a moment he closes it again and returns it to its box. Perhaps he would have put it on immediately, but that would be impossible with his suit on. Instead he pushes a small, hardly noticeable button on his arm that opens up a slot big enough to hold the box - it's pretty much his equivalent to a pocket. When it's closed he looks at Nora with a very tender expression and says, "Thank you." What else can he say?

Nora had her hands clasped over her mouth, eyes locked onto Victor’s face as he took the box from her. Anticipation radiated from her like light. His reaction did not disappoint. With more reverence than she expected, Victor inspected her gift, finally managing to utter something. Her name. It was then that she knew. He loved it.
A bright grin broke out on Nora’s face as she lowered her hands from her mouth and into her lap. As he put it away, the grin lessened to a smile but was filled with no less feeling. “You’re welcome, dear. I hope it helps.”

"It does..." Victor quietly replies, still finding it difficult to speak. But how could he possibly put into words how he feels about this, the first gift his perfect, beloved, and gloriously alive wife has given him in ten years? Especially so perfectly chosen and personal, and so unexpected! Not that he's unfamiliar with her generosity - one of her many good traits - but that she had managed to find a way to acquire something like that for him without his knowledge while in her present condition is not something that he would have anticipated. Fortunately, whenever he's unable to explain his emotions his beloved usually seems to understand them anyway.
And since he's at a loss to say more about the locket and that's the only thing occupying his mind to the exclusion of all else, he's completely silent for a few moments, though his gloved hand is lifted to cup her cheek as if attempting to communicate what words cannot. He'll surely cherish this gift and likely keep it with him always unless he somehow loses it in the future.
But as he shifts to reach her face, the tablet on his lap shifts and the quiet sound of it sliding against the hard plates covering his legs reminds him of its existence. Ah yes! There couldn't possibly be a better time than now to present her with one final gift. "I have brought you one more thing, my love," he says, shifting it from his lap to hers. And by doing so he's presenting her with perhaps the finest example of just how much she's missed over the past ten years - tablet computers didn't exist ten years ago. Well, at least not anything like this - laptops did exist before she was frozen, but they were thick and heavy. Touch screens also existed, but they were either more like a computer monitor or a simple personal organizer. So an actual tablet is not something that Nora could have ever seen before.
Knowing that his wife would be unfamiliar with the technology, he touches the power button on the side and gives her a very quick tutorial while it loads. "The power button is here. The volume controls are on the opposite side. On the front there are places you touch to see the menu, go back, or to be taken to the home screen. Everything else is controlled by touching the main part of the screen," he states, pointing to everything he's talking about.
Moments later, the home screen loads and he continues by explaining the icons there, "This round icon opens an internet browser. The tablet is connected to the wireless here so you can use it for whatever you want. If you would like to order anything, this icon that looks like a sheet of paper is a file that has some credit card information that you may use - though if something is shipped I suggest addressing it to Shanice's residence so that our presence here remains inconspicuous. The icon labelled 'Store' is where you may find additional programs to download onto the tablet. The book icon for a program for reading magazine and journal articles - I've already downloaded many that I think will be of interest to you, and it's easy enough for you to look up more. And this last icon, shaped like a iceberg is a program that contains a copy of all of my notes - or at least those that I have an electronic form." He's almost always behind on scanning his handwritten notes so that he can have a digital copy.
But he's sure that she'll be pleased to now have access to all of these things - especially the latter - though after what she gave him this now seems to be such a plain, practical gift. But at least in his own opinion he's never been able to compete with Nora for truly remarkable gifts so he doesn't expect that to be any other way.
