[/b] Babs joked. She was momentarily worried. Dick liked to speed on his bike, he wasn't used to the kind of normal regulations, he was usually on a different bike, one as Robin, where he could drive as fast as he liked. He was a particularly skilled driver, that was for sure. But often it took two to tango when a crash happened, there was usually someone else involved. Babs didn't even want to think about the statistics about motorbike crashes - least of all the actual fatalities that arose from it. If you crashed on a bike with no helmet, your chances were slim. Horribly slim. Slim to nothing, really. Babs looked down at the helmet and then back up at Dick. He obviously hadn't planned to take her for a spin, of he would have thought to bring an extra one. Babs tried to push aside her worries about watching Dick get bestrewn across the streets of Gotham as he drove recklessly. She knew he'd take it easy tonight. Babs brushed her hair back and fit the helmet onto her head, clipping it into place. She adjusted it slightly so it fit snugly, her red hair billowing out behind. She placed one hand on Dick's shoulder, first making sure it wasn't the one that had recently been shot. She then swung herself over onto the back of the bike, moving both hands so they were around Dick's waist. It felt odd for them to be out together like this, simply because it had been so long since she'd been with Dick for no abundant reason beside just hanging out. Or escaping the wrath of her embarrassingly amused father. It was a weird feeling, to have no where to be or no one to go. Usually they were both out together with very different intentions, following a lead or being shot at. Not tonight. Tonight with Dick and Babs, not Robin and Batgirl. Babs winced slightly, she'd forgotten about the pain in her ribs that she'd been feeling recently. They'd heal - eventually - but she was tired of swallowing pain killers and trying to avoid it. She wanted to get back into the gym and working out, she was beginning to miss her routine. She glanced up at the sky, a light shade of blue was consuming the last of the red where the sun was now disappearing beyond the horizon. It was a gorgeous sight, and Babs smiled to herself. Despite the pain she was feeling, she was completely content. "I'll let you pick where we eat - just this once," she said, speaking into his ear. Usually Babs would be able to pick somewhere, but she felt it was only right since Dick was driving. Checking she was on the bike and wasn't at any risk, she gave Dick the signal to leave. "Let's go,," she instructed. [/ul]

"Have I ever gotten into an accident on one of my motorcycles," Dick replied to her first comment. He didn't think his joking answer through. "Never mind. Don't answer that," he said. He was sure there were a few small accidents, but that was a few years ago. And he had learned from those. While driver as Robin, he had picked up a lot of new skills handling the bikes in difficult weather and all.
He waited patiently as Babs put the helmet on. He was more than happy to see that she wasn't going to protest to her wearing the helmet and him not wearing one. Dick wasn't going to take any chances. Her safety come over his when it came to being in charge of driving. He knew all to well the realistic safety issues and accidents waiting to happen when it came to riding on motorcycles.
Dick turned his head way at the moment, checking the gasoline gauge on the bike. He then felt the light touch of Babs's hand resting on his shoulder for support as she climbed onto the bike. He glanced back at her slightly as she climbed on. Once she was seated on the bike, Dick felt her hands move from his shoulders to around his waist. Dick couldn't remember the last time he had been driving the two of them any where on a motorcycle. Maybe once or so a while back when they were on missions. Though he was sure there were other times, but it had just been so long since then. A bit of a smile came to his face at the feel of Babs holding onto him. He had caught the sight of her wincing in pain, but said nothing of it.
"How about we just go to a pizzeria tonight and get some subs or pizza," Dick said. "I know it isn't all that romantic or anything, but at least there is good food." He didn't have all that much money on him to spend on dinner, so he figured he could have more for the movies to pay for both Babs and himself if they went for something a little less formal for the time being. He promised to himself though that he would take her to somewhere a lot nicer than an old pizzeria for dinner the next time they went out. He was really looking forward to going to the movies with Babs. When was the last time he had just gone to the movies with her?
"Hold on tight," Dick said as he revved the bike. The engine roared to life and the headlight came on right away. The kickstand was up and they were ready to go. Dick leaned forward a bit more, to lean into the bike to have better balance, keeping in mind to try and keep it that way. It might have been a while since the last time Babs had been on a bike, so he was going to try and keep the turned steady and the bike's balance centered. It was only a matter of seconds before they had hit the end of the road and were now heading into town. Dick did cut back on the speed for now, normally just driving these roads he would have gone faster.

[/i] here and there, but there was proof enough none of them had been too serious nor fatal. He was there infront of her, after all. Babs knew Dick well enough to know he'd take it easy and be responsible. Beside, he wasn't ferrying around Batgirl on the back of his motorbike - it was the comissioner's daughter. Probably a bad person to break a law in front of, even when she was out of her costume. Babs had thought better about arguing about who'd wear the helmet. Ultimately, Dick was in charge and driving, he knew he had a responsibility to keep the both of them safe. Babs trusted him enough to know he wasn't going to put either of their lives in danger by driving recklessly. Babs wasn't much of a high maintenance girl - she didn't demand formal dinners every night or lavish restaurants. The life and high society of Gotham's finest didn't really appeal to her. Sure, it was nice to be taken somewhere slightly smoozy, when you were dressed for the occasion, but she didn't intend on ever frequenting the places. It was the same with the kind of formal events her father was always being invited to. Babs despised them, because it was full of rich people trying to rub shoulders with people alike whilst still attempting to feel superior. It was boring - Babs often found herself leaving those kind of events early. "I don't think I'm dressed for anything but the pizzeria," Babs smiled. She didn't care for the fact Dick hadn't picked out some off-the-wall restaurant, nor did she expect him to. Neither of them were dressed appropriately, and the last thing they needed was some reporter - probably Vale - snooping on the pair of them hitting the town in their casual clothes. That'd just be embarrassing. If they were to ever go out to such a place, Babs was hoping for prior warning. Perhaps weeks in advance, to allow her to choose something to wear. Perhaps not jeans and a t-shirt. Babs held onto Dick as he pulled away from his parking spot, the brisk wind hitting her face and tugging at her hair as they sped through toward the centre of the city. Babs was finally afforded the quiet to allow herself to indulge in a few thoughts - was she going to catch a movie, come home and go patrolling? She certainly didn't feel like having some social time with Dick was reason enough to miss patrol tonight. She was tired though, and she imagined this would tire her out more. A tiresome, weary Batgirl was no use to anyone, because her mind was always going to be somewhere else. She couldn't just miss it though. Babs knew very well that despite her mental arguments she was probably going to end up going out later on. It had been a long time since she'd even done anything remotely considered social with Dick, let alone seen a movie with him. There was a different air between them though - though Babs didn't feel like too much had changed. They were still ribbing each other and she was still giving Dick slack about things, their inevitable banter. They were going to grab a pizza and see a movie, nothing remotely unusual for them. However, there was something else now - something more. Like the final piece of their puzzle of a relationship - from a lack of one to a respect to a mutual understanding to becoming so emotionally involved. Babs was just glad to have everything laid out before them now. It wouldn't take long to get into the city, Babs knew that. She was only just beginning to realise how hungry she'd become. Arguing sure worked up an appetite, she thought. Babs couldn't keep her mind out of the game though - she was still thinking about patrolling. She figured Dick probably had this trouble switching off as well. Maybe she shouldn't even try to fight it anymore, maybe it was a matter of embracing it, accepting that she was forever going to be preoccupied with something else. It didn't own her or consume her, but it held a part of her consciousness at all times.[/ul]

Dick continued to drive on toward town. It felt good to be out riding on his motorcycle with Babs. He had to admit, he missed just hanging out with her. For once, he was glad they had gotten caught in that awkward situation after their argument had finished up. It forced them to make a run for it before any questions could be asked. And that gave them the chance to actually do something together.
Now they were together, but would this really count for a first date? Neither of them had been ready for this. Dick hadn't even expected to go through with talking with Babs that night. But everything happens for a reason, and Dick sure was glad things ended up the way they did.
For the first time in a long time, Dick was driving around the speed limit. He heard Babs, he figured that meant the pizzeria was fine. He smiled a bit at her saying that she wasn't even dressed for going there. "You look fine to me," Dick said glancing quickly over his shoulder at her.
He didn't keep his attention there for long as he needed to pay attention to the road. They turned down a couple more roads and were now getting into the Gotham city. It was dark now, and the lights on the shops were now on. The street lamps hung over head, lighting up the street. Dick had to slow down even more because there was a bit of traffic. Dick was half tempted to just start going in between the other cars. But he wasn't Robin at that moment. He would more than likely get yelled at if he did so.

[/b] she complained, brushing it through her hands. She knew it didn't matter to Dick - that was the great thing about him. She'd rolled out of her house looking like death, and yet he'd kissed her and was out eating dinner with her now. There wasn't any other boy in the world she thought would do that for her, and no other boy she'd want to either. She smiled at him, still sitting on the bike as she held the helmet in her hands infront of her. She couldn't recall a moment in time she'd been more content. She swung her leg over the bike, passing the helmet to Dick. "Well, hurry up, Grayson, I'm starving," she said, with a playful smile on her face. [/ul]

He set the kick stand and let the bike lean to one side has he was finally able to let down feet set on the ground of either side of it. He leaned back a bit as he sat on the bike with Babs as she take off the helmet.
A smile came to his face as she spoke. He looked at her and smirked. "It looks good on you," he joked about her comment on her own hair. Honestly Dick wouldn't have cared if she had wanted to let her hair whip wildly in the wind has he had driven. To him, Babs was perfect the way she was, no matter how she looked. When she really put effort into making herself look good, it only made her look all the more beautiful in his eyes. When it came down to it, Dick was just captivated by Babs. She was the type of girl to argue for what see believed in and that's what Dick liked about her. Sure, being the ward of Bruce Wayne, any girl would want to just go out with him to get noticed, but Babs was not in it for that. Most of the rich girls he met at the social parties only did it for their family image.
Dick took a hold of the helmet as he listened to Babs rushing him. He smiled back at her. "Just for that, I'm taking my sweet ole time," he said as he stood and swung his the bike. He placed the helmet onto an attachment on the bike. He had only been joking and had walked right to Babs. "Shall we head in," he said as he waited for her a moment.
He walked to the door and held it open for her as they were to enter. "So, have any ideas what you might want to order? We could either get subs, fries, split a pizza? Or go with all three if you are really hungry," he said to her as he walked in, he was staying along sides Babs the whole time.

[/b] she asked with a sly smile as she slid into a seat. "If you eat like that, Dick, you can forget your acrobatics," she joked. Acrobatics, of course, being a code word here for being Robin. "Let's split a pizza," Babs said, a solid conviction. She was hungry, but like Dick she didn't have much money to spare right now. It was better off the pair of them just shared something to eat. She sat in the seat and looked over at him. "It's been ages since we've been out - I mean out," Babs said, emphasizing that she in no one meant it had been a long time since the pair of them had been together, but rather a significant amount of time since they'd casually just hung out. She was suddenly filled with a hundred questions - how was college, was he enjoying it, what did he think of their new professors, how was he feeling about their exams... Babs held back asking them all though. Instead she began to peruse the menu like it had suddenly become something very interesting. She knew Dick would probably pick up on her sudden odd behaviour, and if he questioned her the floodgates would open and she'd hold nothing back in questioning him about how life as Dick Grayson was going.[/ul]

"Hey, when you work out as much as I do, you're bound to burn it off fast," he replied in his defense jokingly as they walked toward the back of the place. There were menus already sitting on the table as they came back to one a few table from the corner of the place. The table was a bit away from the front windows enough that people on the street wouldn't be tempted to just stare as they walked by. There was plenty of business going on in the little pizzeria already with waitresses and waiters running about getting other people's orders. Yet, it was still quiet enough to be enjoyable and relaxing. "All right, sounds good," Dick responded.
Dick took a seat across from Babs at the table she had led them to. He had been skimming over the menu when Babs had said it had been a long time since they had just been out, "I know. It's hard to remember a time when we actually just went out to have some fun rather than running about," he said, know that she would understand that he was also referring to their work undercover and having to go out on missions to investigate things together. Even then, he meant it. When was the last time he had just went to hang out with Babs like a pair of normal teens? Like you could call them normal. Sure they might be your average college students by day, trying to work hard to pass school. But at night, running around in costumes and fighting the local gangs and criminals isn't exactly what you would call normal. Well, at least not to any one that was a vigilante.
Dick glanced back down at the menu for a moment, when he was realized that Babs was acting like she was keeping something from him. He look back up at her and gave her a questioning look. If he knew Babs, there was always something on her mind. And when she was silent like that and acting like her mind was occupied on something else, there was always reason to question her action. He was half nervous as to what she was holding back this time. Just the look on her face told him he might regret asking what she was thinking about. But he did owe it to her, after all this time. She had said herself that it had seemed like he had fallen off the edge of the earth not to long ago.
"All right, I know that act Babs," he started. "What's one your mind?" He knew he was asking for it, but this was a more relaxing situation and any of the others he had been facing lately. When was the last time he had just had a conversation with Babs that didn't end in a fight. He hardly got to even stop and talk with her on campus. How sad is that when you both go to the same school? And he did have maybe like one or two classes with her, but it always seemed that they had to rush off and go their separate ways. It just seemed like they never really got any down time any more.

[/b] Babs muttered to herself. She wasn't prepared to open another can of worms and have a fight over dinner. That was the last thing she intended to do right now. They couldn't argue in public, not over the kind of things that happened in their slightly less-than-average life. Perhaps that was a good thing, it would save face for both of them and they wouldn't end up having an awkward moment between them. It had to be kept civilian now. "I just... I don't see you a lot anymore," she explained. "I get the distinct feeling that you're not... happy... with certain things," Babs said, raising an eyebrow and then darting her gaze back down to the menu to avoid Dick's looks. "Anyway, how's college? How are the grades? Are you ready for the exams? I'm worried, but I think I'll be okay," She said quickly, trying to gloss over her previous statement. Babs was far from too concerned about her exams, simply because she was well aware she possessed the intelligence to ace them with a fairly average mark without so much as lifting a book. However, with the extra studying she'd been doing, she was looking at a very good mark indeed.[/ul]

Dick saw the look on Babs had on her face. He could tell something was bugging her. There was something she wasn't telling him and he had noticed that for sometime now. He had a feeling he knew what it was well. Especially, after that little episode down in the batcave a while back. Dick figure this would be coming eventually either from Babs or someone else. And he knew Bruce had noticed a different in Dick's work patterns lately.
As soon as she had said that she had a feeling that he was 'unhappy with certain things', Dick put down the menu. He knew what she was getting at right then. Dick looked at her straight in the eyes. He could tell she was now avoiding his gaze. So, she has been figuring him out quite a bit as to his recent distancing from everyone else. He knew he would have to face a situation like this sooner or later. And lately, it seemed it was sooner than he had liked, but with what had been said, he was sure questions, concerns, and different feeling would arise from others on the issue.
Even Dick knew his work as Robin had gotten sloppy at times, to the point that he had just rushed in on things. it had nothing to do with the lack of skill or understanding of a situation. It was the lack of focus he had toward everything now a days. He had been thinking many times over and over again since he had gotten back from working with the Titans, that he liked the new found freedom he had when he was leading, not following others. Dick knew he worked well in a team setting and he knew he was more than capable of working on his own as well.
He was about to comment back at her about her statement, but seeing as they were in a more public place then their last little spout off had been a while back, he decided to hold back. He would easy into it. Babs had the right to at least understand what had been going through his mind a bit lately beside his feeling towards her. But he wasn't going to put it out their so easily and clearly as she might want to hear it as. Dick just couldn't bring himself to do so, it wasn't really the business of others to know exactly how he felt about things. That was the great thing about the human mind, no one else could read it. And Dick was very grateful for that in many situations.
"College is fine, my grades are good, and not really," he answered her quick questions. He wasn't going to attack her for her first comment. But he was going to address that he had noticed it and wasn't going to let her get away with saying it though. "You have noticed," he questioned on her first statement.
He wasn't going to be mad at her for being it up. He just didn't want to really talk about it. Dick knew she would pick up on his touch and go on the subject. Though he had a feeling that Babs would be able to figure him out soon enough. His methods of fighting lately had been a bit different since he'd gotten back. Maybe sometimes to the point of almost being like the Batman in some ways as a loner. "What feelings gave you that idea," he asked, pretty sure he knew the answer already. He knew he was putting up the guard again. "Has it been that obvious?" The last question was more of a hole, giving her the chance to see that he did want to let her in on it a bit, but still being a little closed to the subject.

[/i] noticed, and I doubt I'm the only one,"[/b] Babs said, now looking across at Dick. A smile still played on her face, because despite the kind of discussion they were delving into right now, she was still content for the most part. They weren't throwing themselves headfirst into this. Every word needed delibration and needed to be thought about, given their location. It simply meant they had to consider their words before they spoke, which, given how headstrong and opinionated the pair could be, simply could only be a good thing. They had to regulate their own sentences. Barbara was surprised that Dick had even thought for a moment that she wouldn't pick up on the small things. He'd been unusually reckless as of late, and his worrying behaviour had been seemingly rubbing off on Babs too. Both of them had been very untoward recently, Babs wasn't used to seeing Dick act so impetuously, he was usually so collected and rational about things. His focus and his determination had been slipping, and she was concerned something was on his mind, or perhaps being Robin wasn't enough for him anymore. No matter what happened, who the pair of them concerted with outside of their shared lives, no matter how much time he spent away with the Titans, Babs was always going to be the one person who could see through Dick with little trouble at all. "If you thought I wouldn't notice, then you're underestimating me, Grayson," she smiled, keeping the conversation light. "I know there's something wrong, you've been lax recently," Babs said, thinking about the bullet wound Dick had acquired recently. "It's not like you," she added. Dick was often focused as Robin, alert and on the ball. His behaviour recently had sprung up concerns in her mind, and she doubted it had passed by Batman unnoticed. Barbara looking up as a waitress came along to take their order. She glanced over at Dick, and then reverted to pick up the menu and this time actually gave it a quick scan. "I'll have a coke, and maybe we could share a cheese pizza?" Babs asked, looking at Dick. They were sharing, after all, so she couldn't order for both of them. It had to be consensual between them, but Babs often found herself calling the shots between the pair of them, and she doubted Dick would raise any issue about her choice. Babs was momentarily struck by how weird the situation was - balancing something as mundane as ordering food in a pizzeria with covertly discussing their vigilante lives.[/ul]

Dick did take note of her light smiling. He knew she wasn't trying to upset him or anything. She was just stating what was on her mind and possible the mind of others. Dick knew very well that she had been the one to pick up on everything about him. They were too close to really hide anything from each other. And when they did, it always seemed like there was something off about the other person.
Babs sure did know how to pick a time to get him caught in a corner. He could right now just say thing like if they had been back at the manor or in the batcave. He knew she was probably pleased that this would slow the too down and think about what they are really saying. Dick didn't right out care for how she had said anything about this, but he was the one who fell for it. And was glad thought that being in a setting like this would indeed force him to think about what he is really saying and he could definitely keep his guard up a bit without tell her too much information on anything. It just wasn't his think to speak his mind about his problems. But this problem was more of a growing issue. It kept coming back and forced him to really start thinking about what was going on and what he might have to do to get over it.
"You're right, I'm sure your not the only one. Between all of us, it's not all that hard to notice when someone is off," Dick commented. He knew Bruce had probably picked up on a little of the stress Dick was going through at the time, but Alfred probably took notice of it first. Alfred was always good at these kind of things. He could usually tell there was something going on before you could yourself. If Dick had been talking with Bruce, he wouldn't be talking in this manner. Babs was someone he could really relate to and talk with, not being judged as much. That and to Bruce, sometimes Dick felt like he was just a kid in the eyes of Bruce. And that was what Robin was starting to feel like when he worked with Batman.
Dick leaned back in the chair and crossed his arms, his right hand upon the left arm, where the bullet wound had been. It had been healing quite nicely so he was getting back into his usual work routines, well almost. "Yeah, you got a point there," he said. He played off Babs's lightness of the conversation. He wasn't going to get mad or anything. He would just keep it light. They didn't really have to go deep in to it. Dick then jokingly questioned her,"Are you sure your not a mind reader? You're getting awful good at this kind of stuff."
He sat back as he let Babs take control over ordering the food when the waitress came. "Sure, sounds good to me," Dick said when he saw her giving him a look that seemed to ask if that was fine by him. "I'll take a coke, no ice, please," he added to it. After the waitress had taken the order, Dick waited to return to their conversation. "I knew you would pick up on it. And after what happened back at house I'm sure that just gave him more pieces to figuring out things or get an idea," he said emphasizing on 'house', knowing Babs would take that as in 'the batcave'.

[/b] Babs said, "the complete lack of privacy you're afforded." Babs smiled, and although she said it all with love, she couldn't help but feel her statement was at least partially true. It become increasingly difficult to hide things from people you saw on such a regular basis. When something was off - when you were having a bad day or something had happened - it was just so easy to detect. They all worked so closely together and knew so much about one another, it was almost impossible to let things slip by. It was a curse as much as it was a relief to know you didn't have to explain your feelings to people. Babs didn't really want to tell Dick how obvious he'd been recently. It wasn't like he was making much effort to hide his discontent with his position in life right now. Assuming school was going well had made it easier for Babs to cut down the potential issues when she'd originally picked up on it all way back when they'd been at the bank robbery. University wasn't something that tended to bother Dick, in a similar way to Babs, he was smart, although she wasn't going to sit around and allow him to entertain the idea that he was smarter than her. Babs prided herself on many things, as did Dick. He was immensely good at what he did as Robin, brilliantly good - almost scarily good. He was a natural for acrobatics, no surprise given his background. However, Babs had to work at it a little harder than he did. For her, what came naturally, was intelligence, with technology and otherwise. She had to afford herself superiority in just that small aspect of life, though she didn't speak about it openly. "Now that would be a useful power to develop," Babs joked when he asked if she was a mind reader. It would certainly make everything a hell lot easier, she thought. Babs watched the waitress leave, beginning to notice how thirsty she was now that she'd spoken about getting a drink. She turned her attention back to Dick. "I have little doubt that he already had suspicions - you know what he's like," Babs smiled. Not much got past Batman. Then again, Babs paused, human emotions wasn't always his strong point, she figured. "So... what do you want to do?" Babs asked. That was the next logical question - she didn't want to bother with the mundane. There was no point asking why he felt how he did or how long it'd been going on. Those were boring questions with equally boring answers that she was positive she could work out by herself. However, this was the million dollar question, and she found herself leaning toward Dick, anticipating his answer.[/ul]

Dick smiled a bit a her joke about of if she really could have the powers to read minds. "You don't need the power to," he said. "You read mine quite easily." Dick was amused by the thought. He knew Babs could read him with easy without any type of power.
But when she mentioned that Bruce would probably not have noticed as much, his gave her a look that said 'I doubt that'. Then he said,"I have my doubts on that. Sure he doesn't pick up on everything, but I would think he would pick up on a family member being a little off." He knew she would know what he meant by family member. "Even I notice when he is off sometimes. Though, it is harder to read him. That's what he has found out now to give off as much," Dick finished.
There was no doubt in his mind. Bruce probably had noticed something off. Either that or Alfred would probably have mentioned something to him by now. Alfred was always good at picking up on these things. So, it was really rare that anything got pass them all about each other. And it was saying a lot if villains seemed to notice he was off and using it against him because of this.
"Honestly, that's a hard call to make...even for me," he said flat out. He knew what she was getting out. He hadn't said anything about it lately. Not to anyone close. It's hard to say it out, especially here. But he knew he owed it to her. What was he to do? He really didn't want to leave her in the dark, but then again, he felt he could work it out better by himself.
Dick thought about it for a moment. He really could leave Babs wondering about this again. The last time he had, that's how everything had started to get rough in the first place. "I've often thought about it," he said then paused for a moment. "But I think I'm coming close to the cross roads. Between what I am and what more I could be."

[/b] Babs instructed, taking a drink from the coke. "It's what you need to be," she said. She thought for a brief second about Dick giving up his role of Robin, but she couldn't fathom it. His words were minced, not because he was trying to be obscure or secretive - she hoped not - but because they were in public and he couldn't reveal his plans here. Babs didn't want to image a day where he wasn't Robin and she wasn't Batgirl. They'd been side-by-side for so long, it'd almost feel wrong without him there with her. It wasn't a pleasant thought for Babs, and she didn't fancy dwelling on it. She could barely imagine herself out of the Batgirl costume, let alone anyone around her leaving behind their own. Babs glanced toward the waitress, who was serving a few tables away, still eyeing Dick. Babs turned her attention back to the teenager across from her and smirked again. "You've either got an admirer or she's wondering how you manage to leave the house like this," Babs said, leaning over to brush some of Dick's dark hair from his face. [/ul]
