Lisa had recieved a call from one of the Gotham University Law professors, if he could have her give a lecture to the Justice and Criminal majors of the university. This would be a large lecture. Lisa walked out of the shower and picked up her black berry and talked with the man. Her face taking in the words that he spoke. She hadn't done lectures before.
Checking her schedule on the calendar, she had the day off. She had a trial in two weeks, another sexual crime. Men and their obsessions. The detectives also weren't exactly being the best. A few moments earlier and she had to repreman two special detectives because they inadvertanly tampered with the evidence that could have convicted the men.
Lisa dried herself off, grabbing the hair blower to lighten her hair. She also combed it. It was good when it was somewhat curly, after all people recognized her that way. The topic of the lecture was about thinking about a career as a lawyer, judge or cop, childs play of course. Lisa was hoping to either get an intern or someone who wouldn't mind an interesting conversation.
Instead of heels she grabbed her comfortable formal shoes. After everything was ready, she turned the cold handle and pulled two times before the door open. Closing it was easier than opening. Sitting down in the car, she thought about the more cops around meaning more cases. The engine rumbled of her black lexus and off she went.
It didn't take long for the car to arrive at the University parking lot. As she walked out she grabbed the flash drive with key documents from old reports that she wanted to show to the students. A man walked up to her as she put the flash drive into the computer and polished her hair. "Hello Ms. Novak, your lecture will be an hour, so make sure you have enough papers or discussions for that long. The last lecture here ended in disaster." Lisa spoke while she finished making her hair well. "Great odds" sarcasm came in handy when you didn't want to make conversation or didn't have time too.
As the students came in, Lisa waited finally when the last student came in she walked to the podium an applause from the students and faculty of the justice scholars. "Good afternoon, My name is Lisa Novak, I am the Assistant District Attorney for Gotham City and I am here to give a lecture about careers in the justice department. There are many careers that need talented, young, people such as youself. Police, lawyers and judges to name a few. While these careers seem distant, they are achieveable" Lisa felt good about herself, she clicked the button on the clicker as a slide of each occupation and the facts along with it. "Now it may seem that lawyers aren't paid as well, but being a lawyer is more about justice and defending or prosecuting the enemy. Money plays a smaller role in this. Though if your corrupt and greedy money is the only role." Lisa walked out, she was wearing a nice skirt and a light formal jacket of some sorts. She scanned the crowd for people who might be interested in talking with her.

[/b] Babs growled, her cowl had been desposited beside the laptop. She glanced at the coffee slowly, narrowing her eyes. She supposed it could only be the work of her long-suffering boyfriend, who was no where to be seen inside the apartment - he'd be around though, complaining about his foot or working on his various computers. She smiled and took a drink from the coffee and glanced at the time on her laptop. Seven o'clock in the morning. She'd gotten exactly three hours of sleep, assuming she'd fallen asleep at four, when she'd just come in from patrol. Finishing the coffee in record time she got up from her chair, closing her laptop and looked down at her skin tight costume. Not quite Gotham Uni standard issue clothes. She rose an eyebrow and touched the side of her mouth lightly, where she'd been cut the night before after a particularly vicious fight. Grabbing some clothes from her room she headed into the ensuite bathroom and began to change and get ready. After a shower and a change of clothes she felt a lot more human, and deposited her Batgirl suit in with the Nightwing suit and their various different odds and spares, closing the screen behind her as she went. Their apartment was turning into quite the lair, she thought with a wry smile. She picked up her car keys from the table, tucking her laptop under her arm and hooking her bag with the other one. "Bye!" Babs chimed, not entirely sure if Dick was even around to hear her. She frowned and reminded herself to drop him a text or a phone call later. He'd obviously come home, or the coffee wouldn't have found it's way to her. Unless she was making coffee in her sleep now. Possible, Babs thought with a mild smile. She pondered this prospect as she made her way down to the ground floor, where she offered a curt nod of recognition to the man in the lobby. Goerge was always good for a chat, but she rarely found the time to do so. She got into her car, placing the laptop on the seat next to her, glancing in the rear-view mirror to inspect the cut on her lip and what appeared to be a growing bruise around her left eye. Babs pulled a pair of sunglasses from her glove compartment, something she always kept handy to cover the various bruises she received from patrolling and pulled out of the parking lot. It wouldn't take her long to get to Uni, where they were having a special speaker. She was going to be a little late, Babs thought, that was never a good impression to make. Biting her lip - something she did when she was particularly anxious - she pulled into the Uni parking lot, gathering her belongings and legging it over to the lecture hall. She was dressed in a black and red dress, pulled at the waist with a small belt, and a pair of brown boots on. It didn't take Babs long to reach the lecture hall, grateful for all her training. She was barely even out of breath from the run, and she pushed the door open, hoping she wasn't going to disturb the lecture.[/ul]

As Lisa paused she noticed a girl in red hair darker than Lisa's entering the lecture and taking a seat. She subtly smiled, teenagers were always late. Then she clicked again showing the statistics between cases that Lisa has prosecuted and others. "As you can see, I have a significantly higher conviction rate then lawyers who are in the categories of sexual and criminal crimes. You may be thinking, Well they must not be good at their job? That isn't always the case, it depends on what someone wants in the world. I didn't want to be a lawyer at first, I wanted to be a cook. Surprisingly, I still am a great cook"
Lisa laughed as everyone else did. The experience of being here was enthralling and it made her want to go back to College at Harvard. " No matter where you go and how you feel, people will always need help, legal or not. That's my job, I represent the D.A in court cases as well as the people of Gotham. Choosing your job should be based on what you enjoy, how much your going to work, and the impact it has. I cannot stress enough that your impact whether going to an important meeting, effect many people. Being a lawyer or an ADA is not an easy job. I have to go to meetings with other smaller lawyers, deal with cases, and make decisions to put someone in jail, or take them out of it because new evidence arrives." Lisa looked at her watch, the lecture was almost over, another ten minutes.
Lisa showed the students more slides, as she talked to fill up her time slots. "Detectives are very helpful in every case, I can assure you. Though they do make mistakes and I do tell them about law changes and what not, but they're much needed in this kind of work. "Does anyone have any questions for me?" Lisa stared at everyone, smelling the coffee in a near man's arms.

[/b] she commented, with a small nod to show she wasn't trying to be sarcastic about that. "I believe you have a seventy-two percent rate?" she added, just to show Lisa that she knew her stuff quite well. "It's quite above average, and I don't think the statistics could be considered to show a lack of proficiency in other attorneys. So what's the key to making the right decision with a case?" Babs asked, choosing her words carefully. "Intuition? Or is it fact?" Babs continued, and smiled back at the woman. She wasn't trying to make enemies of Lisa Novak - quite the opposite. She was trying to pick her brain and understand what the woman was thinking. There was clearly a reason for her astounding conviction rate, though Babs had heard she was quite harsh with her cases. The room reminded Lisa of her grandmothers house, sulky and sleepy. Some people were sleeping, others writing down things. But when a hand shot up from the crowd, Lisa smiled. The girl was a redhead, much like Lisa except darker hair. No doubt that her question was also something that Lisa expected. When the woman complemented on Lisa's conviction rate, she wondered if she should talk to this girl privately, she was educated and did her research. "As you all are aware, a trial is about compromising and solving disputes with equality; sometimes this is displayed, sometimes not. As a prosecutor representing "the people" and District Attorney, I have to prove why the defendent violated the law and reveal him to the court for what his/ her personality and reactions are.
The truth is a powerful thing. I would say it's both intuition and fact. I do my research before hand. Listen to the interrogation from the detectives, talk with them and build a theory and evidence that will prove that the defendent is guilty. If you want to be a lawyer, you need to be intelligent. If you want to be a good lawyer, you need to be dedicated. Detectives are essential to a case's evidence. If I didn't have detectives or medical examiners, I wouldn't be able to go out to lunch every now and then"

[/i]. Babs figured Lisa had to fall into the 'great' catagory. Her lack of empathy, however, something Babs had read about quite a bit, was something that unnerved her, and she knew quite well the process of putting ones feelings and thoughts on the backburner to follow through the correct course of justice, but she wasn't inhuman. This woman, Lisa Novak, seemed to work like a robot, in Babs' mind. Intuition was useful, but what appeared to be such a lack of human compassion... Her lips pursed again and her hand flew into the air again at the end of the woman's talking. "May I ask, Miss Novak, your opinion," she started, and appeared more keen and interested than before. "I know you're fairly new to Gotham but I'm sure you understand some of the... interesting inhabitants that we have. What are you feelings and thoughts on the self-proclaimed heroes and vigilantes in this town. Are they above the law? Do they deserve the same convictions as the criminals they are bringing down?" Babs asked, a smile on her face as her hand dropped and she sat looking quite curious. This was her real test for Lisa, and this would tell her everything she needed to know about the woman. It wouldn't necessarily like her any more or any less than before, because her opinions on the vigilantes, however strong, didn't change her personality. However, Babs was merely curious as to what the woman deemed acceptable in the court of law. She was previously from New York, and Gotham was different and new, and Babs wondered if she intended to come down hard on the vigilantes of Gotham.[/ul]

The girl in red hair seemed to be taking an interest in Lisa; and Lisa for her. This girl was smart, like Lisa. And asked all the tough questions that people would wait in line for, well patient people. Lisa barely smiled when she asked that quesiton. The quesiton was probably one for all Legal officers in Gotham. " I'm glad that your asking the tough questions, they need to be answered and I can only answer them on my beliefs. I accept people such as Batman and his allies simply because they have done the things that the legal system can't do because it would be out of character. Batman and his friends have helped clean out some of the streets worst criminals and given them to the D.A. and Police dept. I will say however, that these heroes aren't the same thing as the law. They help the law with unlawful things. So no they do not deserve the same conviction rates as the criminals I have and will prosecute. While they are still breaking the law, they are doing it for the better of the city, and that's something that doesn't need to be read on a file but heard on the news.Though that doesn't mean I won't subpoena them for hearings or witness testimonies."
The answer was just, and she was sure that someone will get angry at her for saying that, but she doesn't care. She loves hardball and constantly plays it with the criminals, politicians, and lawyers. Yet she knows that a comedic reference doesn't hurt in some situations like that one. And she also knows that if the vigilantes did something major she would prosecute them. Lisa was the same person but she had to think of a more strategies in Gotham. In New York she wouldn't have said the same thing, partly because not many heroes are in New York. But after being saved by a superhero here, she stands firm ready to blow her enemies out of the water.

[/i] above the law, and should they ever get caught then it was a question of morals. They weren't different from the regular people on the streets, they just took an initiative to take down Gotham's criminals. There was a different code from vigilantes, one that they obeyed to because of Batman. Babs would never kill, she was never unnecessarily cruel to someone, even though she felt like at times she ought to be. Batgirl was a symbol associated to Batman, and she would not blemish that reputation or put blood on his hands. Especially not after the recent problems with Nightwing. Babs bit her lip and watched Lisa carefully as people began to leave, she stayed in her seat and pulled her phone from her pocket. Technically she could go back to her apartment right now, but something was willing her to stay and talk with Lisa more. Gathering up her belongings and putting her phone back into her pocket she stood up and instead of following the crowd of students out the lecture room, she headed down to where Lisa was with a curious smile on her face. "Miss Novak," Babs smiled, holding her hand out to the woman, feeling after her questioning she ought to introduce herself properly. "You really believe that these heroes and vigilantes should be... above the law?" Babs asked, eyes narrowed.[/ul]

Lisa's throat and stomach were ready for lunch, good thing that the Lecture was over. As she left the podium some students nodded or smiled. Professors waved and students carried their laptops back into the other rooms. As Lisa was heading towards the exit, the same red haired girl that had been asking the questions stopped again for a final question. She wanted to confirm that Lisa viewed that vigilantes are "above the law". But, there was more explaining, "I don't think they're above the law so much as they don't kill civilians. Would you like to have lunch?"
Lisa knew a good italian restaurant. It was close and the food was well cooked. This would be the time that Lisa could get to know the woman in the confides of a nice restuarant instead of a drapy lecture hall.

[/b] Babs said finally, pulling her bag onto her shoulder with a smile. "It's Barbara, by the way," she explained. "Barbara Gordon... you've probably met my father, The Commissioner?" Babs asked.[/ul]

It was always good to have company, young or old, it made a difference and both people learned from the experience. She walked to her car, seeing that Barbara was inside the car as she got in, she drove to the restaurant. It wasn't too crowded, and Lisa wanted to sit outside, it was warm and nice. She parked on the other side of the street, and walked to the hostess, who already had a table. Apparently being the ADA gave you favors. She sure wished Manhatten was like this. Sitting down, "Thank you: she said to the waitress who was a red head as well, "Red heads everywhere at all times" She lightly laughed. Opening the menu and searching for something light.
"Yes, I have met your father, he is a good and dedicated comissioner. I'm proud to work with him on a regular basis. So now back to you, what are you majoring in? And what is your future job that you want badly?" Lisa was one of the best prosecutors in the country, consistantly rated high for her tough procedures and policies. No wonder she was top of her class at Fordham. But she wanted to educate the youth, for they would be in her position at some time.

[/b] Babs replied earnestly, a smile on her face. She adored her father very much and was glad to find that Lisa too seemed to praise her father. It was clear that Lisa wasn't there to talk about her work though or talk about Babs' father - she was quite interested in her. Babs smiled and glanced at the menu, reaching out for a breadstick that had been placed in a small bowl the middle of the table between them. "Criminal Justice," she explained, with a smile, breaking the breadstick in half. "I'm about to graduate actually, and... and I guess I haven't given my career much thought," she admitted. It was hard to concentrate on a career path when you spent your nights patrolling Gotham as a vigilante. "I used to want to be in the FBI," Babs continued. "I'm not quite sure of anything anymore," she added.[/ul]

Lisa listened intently, as if she was listening to a victim talk about a crime to her. Except that she wasn't going to lay out options and plea bargainaing. "Criminal Justice you say. I have a masters degree in that. Along with a Bachelors in Court procedure and the things that fall under that. With a major like that there is a wide array of options for your career. You could be a policeman, a lawyer, or the FBI." Lisa didn't like the FBI's presence in Gotham , then again she never liked it. The FBI wasn't like the Silence of the Lambs interpretation of Jodie Foster. More like some arrogant agent who killed people under the Government's seal. She ordered a chicken salad. Something that would tie her over for the time being.
She wanted to know more about her, what she liked, disliked. Sure she could look at a file or ask Jim. But the man was busy, and it would be improper of her to randomly ask him about his daughter. Could you imagine, Lisa opening the door in a hurry just to talk about her. No, that wasn't who she was nor would she be that type of lawyer. "You know, I could really use an intern in my office, someone who could help with the files, give a third opinion about the case. Though you wouldn't get paid since we have budgets. I think you would do very well. Your smart and intuitive, like me when I graduated, except that I had the experience, not that you don't. But I would really like for you to help me and understand the benefits of being an Assistant District Attorney. What do you say?" Maybe she was rushing it. But depending on the reaction, Lisa would get a feel for who she really was, and what mattered to her.
