This.
This is what he spent millions on. He ran his finger along the windowsill as he glanced out as the sidewalk below. “It’s a dump,” he said his thought aloud, still mentally grumbling over the amount of money this cost. Rosie never disappointed, yet she sold this small apartment with nothing unique to Nina. Why? More importantly, why did it cost him most of his last heist to buy? He needed money. His equipment was falling apart, and the Penguin was charging him more after the incident at the Iceberg. If he were to keep living his current life style he would have to take a visit to the museum. Luckily, he made a pretty penny off the antiques he stole to frame Catwoman. Those ancient cat artifacts and diamonds paid for this dumpy small apartment.
He turned to glance it over once again. The only thing impressive about this apartment was the lobby, and that technically wasn’t even part of the apartment. Though he did appreciate the extra security. The only people who could possibly break in would be the League of Assassins, and Edward hadn’t done anything to disrupt Ras ah Ghul so he believed she was safe on that account. Yes, overall the security was impressive, but why did she choose this apartment? This building was large. He was certain she could find an apartment with a little more to offer, more flare.
Allen walked in through the open door with another box. The big man looked angry, but who wouldn’t be after lugging box after box. He dropped the box on the ground with little grace before storming back out the door to get another box. “She has to be somethin’ in the sack,” he heard Allen growl in the hallway.
Edward frowned. You would assume that a man who usually had to risk his life for his wage would appreciate the easy labor Edward was offering, but apparently not. A small part of him wished Robby was still around. At least the boy was fearfully respectful and reliable. He would need a new henchman soon, especially with plot molding in the back of his mind.
His eyes found Nina who was opening up one of the boxes. He couldn’t help the natural smile that came upon his lips. “You know most women when given a blank check and told to get whatever they want at least have a bit more style with their choices,” he stated as he walked over to her. It didn’t take long with how small the apartment was. “Were you born seventy years old or did you just age faster then most?” he asked because only an old maid would chose to live in such a disappointing home. It seemed like a place you go to die. Yes, that was it: small enough for those weak arthritis bones to make it across the room and bland enough that you feel death would be better. He definitely would be spending little time here.

When Edward sums up her new apartment that way, Nina has to smile to herself. She knew that he'd feel that way about it, but she's the one who has to live in it, not him. Therefore what makes her happy comes first, and this place is just about as nice as she can stand. She just doesn't care about... things. So having excessively expensive things seems like a waste, as does having enough things to fill an apartment big enough that Edward wouldn't complain about it. She's only one person and she's never been one to be home very much, so how much does it even matter?
Her eyes roll at Allen's comment. Not that it isn't true - at least after she recovered from being shot - but because he's the only one of the three of them that can carry the boxes so it's not like having a bad attitude about it accomplishes anything. She'd have offered to help him, except her last lingering medical issue is that it's probably still not a good idea for her to lift anything heavy. That, and Edward would probably tell her to let Allen do it, they'd get into another argument about nothing...
She's looking for something in one of the boxes, but she easily forgets what it was when she looks up and sees Edward walking over with that smile on his face. "It's a step up from my old place, safer than a bank vault, and I'll be happy here. It's perfect," she says as she straightens with a smile on her face. And as if to emphasize the point, she reaches up and gives him a quick kiss. Why does he have to complain about something that makes her happy? He should quit while he's ahead on that one!
"And you can rescue me from the squalor and take me somewhere nicer whenever you want," she adds with a small laugh. But then her smile abruptly disappears when she continues, "Seriously: if it's 3am, on a Thursday, and you can't stand the thought of me being here..." She interrupts herself to give him another kiss, this one a bit longer.
It's not something she says lightly, given how much she values her time, but she figures that since they have their respective passions the amount of time they'll have for each other will be kept to a manageable level; as incredible as it's been to be able to spend so much time with him since they fixed things between them, she's been very anxious to return to her research. And though he did leave a few times while she was recovering, it wasn't for very long and she can tell that he's also feeling like his life was being put on hold. In the end, they can only distract each other so much. Unfortunately.

The kiss easily distracts him from his current finances. She seemed happy with the apartment that was really only suitable for five college roommates and pizza boxes. She also was right that it was a step up from her old place, but still...could we not try to reach a little higher?
He almost mentioned that fact aloud, but her next comment caused him pause. It wasn't just her words that made him smirk, but her laugh. It was strange how easy conversing had become between them. It didn't seem stressful or frustrating like it had been. It flowed like gravity had taken over and all they had to do was follow it. He enjoyed it. He also enjoyed the serious somewhat hint she mentioned afterward that was followed by a kiss. He smirked against her kiss as his hand naturally trailed along her side. When she pulled away he took in her features. Yes, everything between them had become simpler. "I hope I'm not just limited to Thursdays," he stated, keeping his hand on her side.
Then again if she would be with him most nights then this entire apartment would be a waste. He frowned for a moment doing mathematical calculations in his head. He needed money, and luckily Gotham always supplied him such a necessity. There were so many banks with so many accounts...with. Yes, he thought as a plan formed in his head.
"If you really want to be rescued, I could have us on a plane out of Gotham two weeks faster then it takes to solve the daily crossword," he stated as he stepped closer to her. He would need to leave Gotham for a few months if the plan went his way, but he didn't particularly want to leave Nina behind.

"No, and you're not limited to 3am either," Nina says as her smile reappears. Really the best part about this change between them is that she's free to express the way she feels about him instead of having to hold back. That had always been so trying to her, and she's found that she's much happier when she doesn't have to restrain herself around Edward. It makes being around him so much less frustrating.
When he comes even closer and makes that suggestion, Nina's arms go around him and she rests her head on his shoulder as she says, "Hmm, tempting... But I'm going to be busy coming back from the dead for awhile. I'll need to be in Gotham for that." Now that she's back on her feet, Edward has reassured her that he's settled things with Luthor, and she has this safe haven, she's officially out of things that would stop her from getting back into research - even the ever-distracting Edward.
Shifting her head so that she can see his face she asks, "You're going somewhere?" That thoughtful frown before he made that suggestion seemed to indicate that there was more to it than simply getting her away from her apartment. She doesn't particularly like the idea of Edward going anywhere that requires a plane ticket, but she knows that anything that would pull him that far away from her probably matters too much to him to bother trying to talk him out of it. Not that she's ever managed to talk him out of very much.

He still hasn't gotten used to Nina being so affectionate towards him. When she leans on him his heart almost jumps into his throat. He also wasn't used to not finding affectionate clingy and unbearable. For some reason he actually enjoyed her presence and enjoyed her taking the initiative.
But her words pulled him from the distraction. She didn't want to come with him...that was unfortunate. He could manipulate the situation to make her come with him. He knew for certain that he couldn't leave her here without his supervision. The very reason he would be leaving would be the increase heat to capture him. Batman knowing about their relationship (inward cringe) made any action he took hard on her. He couldn't risk her going to jail as an accomplice. Yes, she would have to come with him, but that still wasn't for some time. He could handle this dilemma later.
He looked down at her when she ask her question. "There is a reason I have yet to be caught, and part of the reason is that I am intelligent enough to know when to walk away from the table," he smirked as he gently grazed his fingers along her side. "I'm planning something that involves explosives which usually catches the attention of the entire JLA. While I've always enjoyed being the center of attention I don't enjoy the cafeteria food at Arkham. To solve this puzzle I put myself into, I usually go to Aspen for a few months. It's almost like a celebration for a job well done."

There's a pause as Nina mulls over all of that. She has to wonder at how little hearing about explosives bothers her; perhaps it's because it doesn't immediately elicit the mental picture of someone dying... even though it has a better potential of killing a lot of people... She stops that train of thought before she convinces herself to be upset. Though she has to wonder how she'll feel when Edward next manages something on that scale, now that she loves him.
Instead she focuses her attention on the other part of what he said that drew her attention: the JLA. "Hmm, that mind-reading alien is a problem," she comments with a frown. The rest of those heroes aren't as big of a worry in her mind since she already stood up to Batman and he has the most questionable reputation. But if the things she refuses to say can be simply pulled from her mind... And at least with Batman she had her gift as a back-up plan; she's sure she'd have no idea what to do with an alien. Still, at least with heroes she mostly has to worry about being used to get to Edward, and not anyone getting killed - that's actually a bit refreshing after what she's been through lately.
"And you're planning on convincing me to come with you, aren't you?" she asks, though she obviously doesn't expect him to answer it. It's taken her awhile, but that comment is a hint that her naivety about such things is starting to wear off - though she probably has a long ways to go yet. But based on just how relaxed her tone is, she's not thinking about arguing over any of that right now; she's too distracted by his fingers to argue about something she's not sure of her opinion on. It takes a pretty determined thought for it to stick around when Edward is touching her, and she hopes she never gets so used to him that it changes.
Which is why her thoughts soon shift to something related. "It would help me plan if I had some idea when, either way," she states, deliberately avoiding a question since she knows his trust in her isn't total and that leaves him free to respond to that thought anyway he wants. The more time she'll have, the better - she sure that her life will be sheer chaos at first. But she's doubtful that whatever he's planning will wait long enough for her to get things settled if he's telling her about it now. On the other hand, it's not like she's eager to be the spot of not being able to see him for months, but she knows better than to argue the point that he doesn't have to make something explode.

He was somewhat impressed with her ability to analysis the greatest threat within the JLA. Martian Manhunter was a difficult man to meet, not only because of his emotionless attitude but his ability. Then again, Edward had dealt with the man on a few occasions.
He smirked arrogantly as he thought of his last transaction with the alien and also to reassure her. "The thing to remember when meeting John is to keep your thoughts jumping and to distract him with someone else in peril," he paused after his statement realizing Nina would never put another's life in peril. It would be a much more difficult scenario for her then. He looked over her small frame against his body. "His weakness is fire," he stated seriously for two reasons: one, he didn't want Nina facing jail time because of his actions and two, he didn't want to face the electric chair because of her knowledge of him. He hoped she would never meet anyone from JLA besides the Batman... (inward cringe)...but if she had to, she had to be prepared.
Her next comment only causing him to raise an eyebrow. It was somewhat surprising how well Nina was starting to understand him. Her ability to predict his actions was almost uncomfortable, but he couldn't fully come to terms with that underline irritation because her next statement suggested she might very well come with him. Of course, she took the action most politician made and didn't fully promise. She gave him enough hope so he would have no need to pry into the matter further. Smart. Normally he would call her on such an action, but he had no desire to discuss that issue at the moment. He would handle it later.
He decided to handle it in the simplest way: answering her. "Depending on how things happen with Selina, it should be within two weeks. Oh," he said aloud without his permission as he was reminded of Selina. Selina would be staying with him soon. Would Nina not like that? No, it shouldn't even concern her because it had nothing to do with...with...with whatever this was. Should he mention it?
He had to now, since his mouth had failed him. His fingers stopped moving on his body and his form became stiffer. Part of him even wanted to separate his body away from her to get some much needed space, but knew such an action would only draw more attention. He looked away from her and at the wall across from him. "Selina's going to be staying with me," he stated bluntly. Did she know that Selina was Catwoman? Did she even know who Selina was? No, that wasn't the point. The point was he had some weird obligation to tell her that another woman would be in his home, in his bed, and probably attempting to seduce him because honestly when did Selina not seduce a man? He frowned irritated at this new obligation, but a small part of him felt good about being honest...
These were the reasons he danced between women. There were no obligations.

When Edward starts to give her tips on dealing with Martian Manhunter, Nina pays careful attention - it's probably best if she does whatever she can to avoid meeting him, but if that fails it's good to have as many options as possible. But when that last part sinks in she blinks and frowns at the thought. It's not true that Nina would never put another person's life in peril, but she wouldn't for that purpose. "Fire - hence why you lit a girl's hair on fire..." Nina comments idly. She's not sure whether or not Edward remembers the full details of everything he'd told her when he was drunk, but she does.
"I'm sure I can figure out how to make sparks," she adds to reassure both herself and Edward that she'd be able to handle it should the situation arise - sparks mean that she could start a fire as long as there's something flammable nearby, which is usually the case. But even Nina's self-confidence starts to waver at the thought of finding her way through a meeting with him or multiple members of the JLA, which is why she's now unsure whether or not she should go with him. That will require some pondering.
Her attention is easily diverted by the answer to her question, though it's not the answer itself that catches her attention. No, it's the way he stiffens in her arms after he mentions Selina, the way he looks away, and that extra detail about his plans for the woman that he didn't happen to mention during his drunken rant.
For a few moments nothing happens as Nina struggles to figure out exactly what to do with that. But then her arms loosen and she lifts her head. But rather than stepping away, she keeps hold of him at the waist and leans back a little so that she can look at him squarely. "Edward, what are we?" she asks, her tone questioning but not upset, "I'm asking you, because I can't answer it. I've always been ahead of you; that means that we are whatever you say we are." Up until now she's been content to let that issue be hazy: she's never held any real expectations for Edward because she didn't want to and knew that she couldn't impose her own expectations on him. But suddenly she feels the need to know what he thinks she should expect of him.

He was somewhat surprised she knew about that incident. Did he mention it when he was drunk that one night? He dug through those clouded thoughts and eventually remembered him uttering something about the martian. She really did know quite a bit about his life. Did he feel comfortable with that? She hadn't used any of the information against him...yet.
Her mention of making a spark was impressive and he would have commented on it if their conversation hadn't so easily shifted on to this annoying subject.
He felt her pull away from him which forced his eyes back to her. The one comment was pushing her away. He wasn't planning on doing anything with Selina, and if he was planning on doing something with her why does she have that say in her life. If he was planning something it wasn't out of spite against her. She shouldn't leave, but of course his mind was jumping ahead. He felt her hands still on his waist. She wasn't leaving him. Good.
He would kept that thought if she wouldn't have asked him that question. It wasn't the first time he had been asked that question, but it was the first time it wasn't certain of the answer. He knew they weren't friends in the classic term of how you describe a friend, but he also would never consider her his girlfriend or any label close to that. He was the Riddler. He didn't have girlfriends. He had women he was acquainted to, not girlfriends. So he found himself going back to answer he had given many others. He smirked and started to rub his hand along her side again. "Why try to label something? A label, after all, is just a name created by society to help them make a complex idea into a simple concept. I don't want to lower myself to the morons on this earth, why would you want to?" he asked, using his hold on her waist to gently pull her against him. Distraction always helped to persuade. "We know how we feel, isn't that enough?" he asked as he leaned his head closer to her almost like he was going to kiss her.
The words had left his mouth smoothly because they had been said before, though usually when he stated last part he meant, I feel nothing more for you then I do for a worthless riddle and you love/care for me, but the women always took it differently. With Nina he didn't think that, but he also didn't feel comfortable committing to something he had no idea what it was. He knew for certain he wasn't going to label it some insignificant term created by the masses.

That answer is not totally unexpected, but then again Nina wouldn't have asked it in the first place if she hadn't been prepared to get past that initial response. And unfortunately for Edward, the thought of someone with as dubious of a reputation as Catwoman in his apartment is strong enough image for his attempt to distract her to not fully work.
Her heartbeat catches at his closeness and she can't help but smile at how cliche that last line is, but she says, "See, that's the problem. I know how I feel, you know how you feel, and you've got a pretty clear picture about how I feel and what that means. But all I know is that you say that you love me and just a little of what that means. But not enough."
Her arms shift from his waist so that she can drape them over his shoulders, bringing them just that much closer, unable to resist even though she's trying to have a serious discussion. "So the way I see it, you can either attempt to explain in detail what it means, or you can pick one of the many convenient labels the moronic masses have come up with in order to avoid doing that," she says, leaning forward so that her forehead is resting against his.
"Either way I'll be disappointed because I'll want more, but whatever this is, whatever you want to call it, I like it. But I'm asking because I really do need to know," she adds, but despite the serious nature of her words her smile indicates that even though she's expecting an answer she won't like it probably won't change anything between them; she's happy to take whatever he wants to give her even if she doesn't think it's quite enough.

He expected to her to kiss him and accept his words for what they were. He expected it to be simple. No, he didn't. He was talking with Nina. It was never simple with her. He would have normally been distracted by her own closeness and affection, but he was too focus on her words that manipulated him into a position where he would be require to tell her what he thought of this. When did she become as talented with her tongue as him?
Though he was in the arms of a woman he cared for, he felt like he was being backed into the white brick room at Arkham with that cement doorway and small window. He didn't like not being in control. He didn't feel in control. He wanted to reach into his pocket and grab his candy, but he just gripped her tighter around her waist. He looked into her eyes and saw the smile. She seemed happy. She happy with him, but why was she requiring something of him. She was curious. He would be too, but he would solve the riddle through methods that didn't involve a direct question. Direct questions were the lazy way of solving an issue. It would be like ripping off Batman's mask...cheating and pointless.
He forced a smile as he looked at her. "I want you in my life," he stated. Wasn't that enough for her? She was the only woman he felt that way with. If he didn't he would have forced her out, obviously with how he had reacted in the past. "That's what that means," he continued. He would never bend to a label. Bending to a label only reminded him of being branded like a farm animal.
He had already bleed out more of his feelings then he had ever fault comfortable with, and she wanted more. He needed to change topics. He pulled her even closer and kissed her. If he kept her lips busy she wouldn't be able to press this topic further. She was his. Why did he have to explain further?
He pulled away only an inch. "You know, dear, this apartment needs a bit of color...maybe green," he smirked as he glaced at the white walls.

Truth be told, Nina has always been this talented with words. She just knows that butting heads with Edward on anything is like pulling teeth so she's happy to avoid it whenever it isn't really important to her - and there isn't much that is really that important to Nina. Unfortunately, this question is one of them, and the somewhat annoyed smile on her face as she kisses him back is a hint that it isn't over as far as she's concerned. Telling her more things that she already knows doesn't count as an answer to her question.
Then again, if Edward wasn't a challenge, then success would be far less rewarding. The other men she'd been with before were smart too, but they were also a lot more boring and perhaps for that reason. But that's what they have in common; what's different is that Nina doesn't feel the need to turn every little thing into a puzzle - it's the answer that matters to her, not the method of getting it. Though maybe it will be easier for her to get the answers she wants after he's spent some time with Selina... as troubling as that thought is.
Still, when he pulls away and comments on colors, the annoyance is gone from her smile and she's obviously willing to drop the issue - at least for now - because she comments, "Hey, it's my apartment!" However, there's only a brief pause as she glances at the walls herself before she asks, "If I pick green, would you like it better?" She's never had a problem with that color, actually, she just gets tired of seeing it everywhere around Edward. But if it would upgrade her apartment to something above 'dump', she wouldn't mind it here. At least there will be no arguing with him over the colors in the lab since sterile white is practically mandatory for much of it. And that's where she'll be spending the majority of her time, most likely. This apartment will be for sleeping and, if necessary, for hiding.

He smirked at her comment, happy he had successfully changed the topic. "Oh? I'm glad you can inform on who apartment I am currently in. I had no idea," he said in complete sarcasm as he continued to stroke her shirt.
When she agreed to his color choice his smirk turned into a larger smile. "Would I like it better?" he repeated her question as he looked around the small, not exciting, apartment, "Yes, I would. Though by better, I mean the small difference that could be compared to the distance traveled by an ant in a second. Still a dump, but less distracting to the eyes," he said then looked back at her. Nothing could save this apartment. It would be doomed to face mediocracy.
"I think we will have to stay with your first plan," he commented, "The one where I am the intelligent private eye saving you from this eye sore as I solve the person who punished you with it." His thumbs circled along her hip bone. "Only to finally deduce that you were the one to create it. What a puzzle I am to know that your the true criminal of this creation? Luckily, I wouldn't be an amazing P.I. if I couldn't find a solution," he smirked as he joked. The idea of him ever solving crimes was comical. Solving crimes were simple and almost boring. They were as easy as blinking. Ha, no he would never get involved in that field, but he didn't have a problem teasing. "So should you do jail time for your disaster apartment or can you convince me you learn your lesson? I have to give the GCPD something for your crime."

Well, if that's all the good that green will do her apartment in Edward's eyes, she may as well pick something else. It has to be something she can live with, after all...
Of course, it's rather difficult for her to continue to consider paint colors when he goes on. First she smirks, but that quickly turns to a laugh. Instead she says as she lowers her eyes in shame, "Oh! You've caught me red-handed. It was foolish of me to try to pull one over on you, Sherlock." Oh, if only Edward would put his mind to such a good use! But of course she'll never voice that opinion out loud. "But no, I don't think I've learned my lesson," she continues, looking back at him, "We both know that I'd do it again."
She glances around at the room they're in with that happy smile on her face. If wanting this place is a crime then she is most definitely guilty, and completely unashamed of it. She has her style and she's not going to apologize to Edward for it, just as she never complained about his apartment. But she figures that the one redeeming feature of the place for him will be the fact that it's hers, since that's her opinion of his place.
"And my crimes won't end at this apartment, I'm afraid," she adds, slightly more seriously, though her eyes don't leave his. Because while she's not sure which parts of the rest of her plans he will like or not like, she's sure that there's an item or two that he will have a similarly negative opinion on. But then, she's not about to rearrange what she does simply to please him any more than he would for her.

He couldn't help the soft chuckle from leaving his lips at her comment. It was hard to admit, but he was having fun just causally chatting. It was something he hadn't done since...well actually he can't quite remember. He also felt pride when she called him Sherlock. It reminded him of their first meeting. It was one of the first names she called him after he deduced her career, which was quite an easy riddle to solve. "Ah dear, well that is a problem. I can't let you out onto to the streets if you only plan to continue these crimes. People will be terrified, and we both know when people panic they miraculously become even more stupid then they already are. It looks like you might have to stay with me until I can teach you the errors of your ways," he said pulling her body close to his to emphasis his point.
But when he hears the seriousness behind her added comment, the smile falters on his face. He knew she had plans on what she would do with her newfound ability to walk in public again, but he hadn't really pressed. He didn't feel a need to because he doubted it would be anything drastic to put her in danger. Beside he had also plan to have Robby tailing her...though that was when the boy had been alive. He needed to find another henchmen. But her seriousness told him that she obviously was planning something that she knew he wouldn't approve of.
Why else would she wait until this moment to mention it? It had to be something he wouldn't be pleased to hear. Was she planning on getting in contact with Batman? No, that made no logical sense. His mind was just jumping to the most drastic situation. It was probably something similar to the apartment. Minor in the grand scheme of things, but not something Edward particularly liked.
"Well dear, if you confess now I might be able to convince the DA to take off time from your sentence," he said continuing with their little game, but the seriousness in his tone and the straight line his lips formed only proved he was no longer joking. He did not like the idea of Nina keeping something from him. No, he did not like it at all.
