Under a normal circumstance, Dr. Crane would have ignored such a summons. He would have crumpled it up and thrown it in a wastebin in his lab. Miss Glass would have never heard of it and he wouldn’t have had to tell her he was going away for a while and not be able to tell her here or why. He wasn’t expecting to be gone long but that didn’t mean it couldn’t happen. He had seen these types of summons before, it was the way the underworld worked. If you didn’t come they would come to you.
Under a normal circumstance he wouldn’t have cared….nor would they have dared.
But the timing on this was too perfect to ignore. A delicate transfer of power had just been put back into his hands after he came out from the weight of Ra’s He needed to convince him to take him back into his favor, he could only go on so long like this, on a tight leash and a limited supply. Their last conversation had not been a good one. If he could have come loose from him all together he would have, he’d tried, but every attempted had failed. Endless rows of pots still littered basements he’d tried to grow the plant himself in. The plant simply didn’t want to grow out of its natural environment. Due to its unfortunate location, he couldn’t even collect it himself without getting picked up by Ra’s.
So, he didn’t ignore the request….and when he was told to show up at Amicio’s he couldn’t help but think it was better than a storage unit. Although they would have been able to manage both of them equally, the place they chose to speak said a lot about the circumstances of the visit. They were fools for doing this, tying up his time with something that would probably turn out to be trivial to him, but he knew better than to let it go without responding.
He walked into the Italian restaurant, his head down and his collar flipped up to cover his neck. He wore shades that were far too big for his face. The doctor wasn’t afraid of being seen, but rather others were afraid of seeing him and although he never minded striking fear into those around him, he didn’t need the attention drawn to him. If he wanted to accomplish anything, it was best to go out unnoticed. Upon walking in he didn’t see anything or anyone of particular interest. The message had simply told him to go here at this time, he assumed that they would find him now.
The doctor moved further in and sat at a booth toward the back. Slowly he peeled of his coat and removed the shades that covered his eyes only to be replaced by his glasses. He adjusted them on the bridge of his nose and waited.
