There was still a chill in the air even though the season kept pushing toward spring. The days had begun to heat up but the nights still had the tendency to drop in temperature as if it was still the dead of winter. Tonight it was just a light chill, something he could stand. Even if he couldn’t he had little choice. Originally, he wanted to meet him in the same bar he chose to meet any professional, but that was exactly the problem. He had gone there so much he knew it was predictable of him. He wasn’t being paranoid, he was being smart. The doctor knew that there were eyes on him now, eye watching him closer than ever and for that reason he couldn’t meet in a public place, especially one already prone to violence.
That’s why he was here, leaning against the wall of an ally just across main. He had given him the specifics of where to go and he was sure the message had reached him to meet him here. It wasn’t often that he was willing to collaborate with another professional unless it was in his best interest to do so. This was a rare case where it happened to be. He wasn’t beyond striking an empty deal, there would always be loopholes on both sides. He knew that there was no honor among thieves in this world. But if you came with the right temptation in front of them, things could work out.
The doctor looked disheveled, a wreck. The way it had happened still kept running through his mind and made him jump and twitch against the wall. He seemed nervous…but he refused to believe that. He wasn’t nervous, never nervous just aware of his surroundings. This needed to be taken care of before it got any worse. He could still hear Ra’s on the other side of the phone as Dr. Crane ended their deal. He had cut him off clean, with no threat but that was a threat in itself. He knew that he would come after him and he refused to stand by while he tried to do so.
There was far too much to do to be drug back to that place. He wasn’t so ignorant as to think that Ra’s didn’t know what he’d done to himself, but he was sure he wanted to know more than Dr. Crane told him, which was nothing. He’d be coming after him and he needed a distraction. That was why he needed someone to use, in this case Mr. Dent.
He took steadying breaths and leaned his head back against the chipped brick of the alley. He just needed to wait for him to arrive.
