It's been weird for Nina to not have Shawty around. The young woman was not merely an assistant and bodyguard, but a friend. And the woman that Lex has offered as substitute is... well, Hope's probably actually better than Shawty as a bodyguard but fails to fill any of Shawty's other roles. Instead Nina's had to pick up the slack, and frankly she's struggling to do so. Especially when it comes to encouraging her to get out of the lab from time to time. In fact, she gets the impression that Hope would rather her stay in there all day every day as the familiar surroundings makes the job of keeping her safe easier in a lot of ways.
But eventually Nina manages to force herself to get at least a brief change of surroundings - there's a cafe that Shawty would take her to frequently. It has an outdoor patio area that will be closed for the cooler months all too soon, so Nina opts to enjoy a glass of lemonade and salad there. Though she's somewhat regretting the decision because Hope keeps looking around suspiciously at everyone. It's probably more subtle than she feels like it is, but it makes her feel rather conspicuous while she's attempting to relax - she could be remembering wrong, but she's pretty sure that Shawty was more subtle about it. Or maybe it's just that a very petite blonde young woman is just plain less conspicuous while doing anything than tall, dark muscular woman standing near her. Shawty would have sat down, at least.
But all thoughts of that and of relaxation are abruptly set aside when a sudden commotion near the other end of the patio catches her attention. What's going on exactly is unclear, but she's extremely quick to respond when one of the people clustered over there calls out, "Is anyone a doctor?"
"I'm a doctor!" she responds as she leaves her seat and hurries over to the group, with Hope right on her heels. When she gets to the group, she sees that they're surrounding a man who appears to be unconscious, and at that point everything else that could be on her mind is banished in favor of concern for him. "Someone's called 911?" she asks as she rushes to his side, already reaching out with her gift even before she starts to check him with both eyes and hands. Fortunately, the diagnosis is easy, especially for her. Unfortunately, it's a severe heart attack. The man's lucky though - Nina has a pretty good average for saving patients.

If this hadn't been the week from hell then the good lord could only know why or what for the leggy 5'11" blond walking down a city sidewalk looking as lost as a deer in the headlights. Nothing but amazed a everything her Greek eyes make contact with. Small wonder since exactly one week again today her life had a completely different spin on it. A week ago the year was 1950. She was kicking rump and helping provide free dental work like only se could. Busting chops and loving every minute. Just her and her comrades in arms whom has shown up just in time to back this pilot gal up in a battle against her recurring nightmare, Killer Shark.
Then everything went blank. A flash of white light that completely enveloped her and the next thing she knew here she was. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. It took her several hours in the first day she arrived to figure out the year was now 2014 and this whole thing had been a sick, cosmic joke by someone and she had no earthly idea why, how, or who. Stranger in a strange land and apparently she was now 94 years old without looking a day over 30. All she had in her even after a week was a small amount of money and a pistol she had tucked away in her. Using the money she has to get a few changes if clothes and food doesn't last long in this economy either apparently. Fortunately she managed to get a job pdq as a bouncer and grabbed her first check today, enabling her opportunity to stay somewhere at night, I.E. a hotel room and live a little better off. But still everything was so weird, so different, so unusual here and it didn't take her long to figure out she could never get back home again.
The real kick in the butt being is that history records her as dead.
No permanent residence yet, no friends and no contacts outside of her job and here she was sliding into a street cafe, a nice looking one too at that, just in time to hear panicked screaming from a woman whose husband just fell out of his chair while having a heart attack. Wearing a short sleeved shirt, a tight fitting one, and a pair of jeans along with something called Reebox, she was about to crate the scene and provide her knowledge of CPR when she saw a woman who professed to be a doctor already having taken charge. All good and that, right? At least it was until the hysterical and still screaming, panicked wife of the victim looked like she was about ti put her hands around the doctor's throat and squeeze. The woman that accompanied the doctor didn't look none too happy right now either, shooting hateful glances at everyone with her eyes until Zinda dove in like the cavalry and literally almost hysterical woman which had just screamed the words you're killing him, to the ground.
Lady, I know you're havin' a rough time but this ain't helping now kindly park yourself in a chair and let the lady do her job. Zinda's nostrils flared and eyes narrowed while she flipped her hair over her shoulder and turned her attention back to the scene of the medical emergency. Don't know anyone named 911 unless that's some sort of secret code, ma'am but we better be getting this guy to an ambulance, ya reckon?

As focused as she is on the man, it would me easy to mistake Nina for being unaware of the possible harm that his wife may have intended for her. Instead she simply flat out ignores that problem, knowing that Hope will intervene if she's at all in danger. Instead she notes out of the corner of her eye that it's another woman who has tackled the hysterical woman. "Thank you," she says, not really looking up though it's clear who she's thanking. Yes, Hope could have done it too, but probably would have been even less gentle about it. And Nina likes it when things are done as gently as possible, even in these circumstances.
Though she's distracted a moment later when she notes that nobody in the crowd has responded in the affirmative about contacting the emergency services. You'd think that someone would have thought of that... Still, people who are panicking are stupid, as a general rule, so it's actually not that surprising to her. No, what's surprising is that the only response that she does get is the woman who handled the man's wife says something so totally nonsensical that she actually spares the woman a glance long enough to look at her like she's grown a second head.
But she shakes that off quickly, in one quick movement pulling her smartphone out of her pocket and handing it to a member of the crowd - specifically not giving it to the woman who either doesn't understand that now is not the time for jokes or somehow doesn't know what 911 is - with the instructions to, "Call 911." That done, she turns her full attention back to the man. Though what he's suffering from is not a small problem, she's not too concerned - partly because she knows that the hospital is close and that the delay in calling them won't hurt him much.
And the other part is because she's actually having to struggle to walk the fine line between saving his life and doing something so downright miraculous that it would raise the eyebrows of the doctors who will be handling him in mere moments. In fact, though she most certainly doesn't want him to die, she does want him to learn from this. He obviously hasn't been taking very good care of himself, and that will only lead to another heart attack if it continues, so her goal here is actually to make sure that though it's not lethal it will still be bad enough that he'll know that he almost died today and needs to rethink his choices. So it's with great care that she's even now reshaping the blood clot that cause the heart attack, allowing some but not too much of the much needed blood to flow to his heart. She's at the task until she can here the siren of the approaching ambulance.

You're welcome. Zinda's reply was a little curt in it's tone. Still carrying a little left over emotion directed toward the victim's wife as she responded to the doctor attending the heart attack victim. The stare she received from the woman a second or two after didn't really faze this throwback soldier either. She'd been getting alot of those since her arrival a week prior. All it meant was that she'd apparently guessed wrong in the whole 911 thingamajig. So it was some sort of emergency service number. Roger that fact and she quickly stowed it away while she watched. Ignoring the countless stares not only from the doctor but now from some of the customers in this cafe.
Their problem.
Zinda's only concern was making sure that man would live and despite being a fifth wheel in regards to doing something useful, she did her best job anyway of ensuring that she would have absolutely helped to get the guy to a hospital but that problem was fixed all on it's own when someone took what must have been a phone but looked like some out if an old science fiction movie and called for an ambulance. Within minutes the ambulance arrived to load the man u and stitch him where he would hopefully recover. Problem solved and Zinda was ready to fade into the scenery and vanish. She was hungry and probably not going together anything if substance here without more stares and unwanted attention.
About t cut and run with a deep breath she was when she was given an unpleasant slap in the face by the wife of the man who had pulled out a cellphone if her own and called the police with charges of assault aimed toward Zinda. The officer in blue stamped his way in and read Zinda her rights and clearly wasn't n the mood to listen to the logic about how she'd saved the doctor from being choked to death.
Bloody hell... She grunted while her arms were pulled behind her back, a situation she could easily have fought her way out of if slitting a cop and making everything worse was higher in her list of things to do today. The fact that the officer had just found her concealed pistol didn't help a whole lot either.

When the EMTs arrive, for several minutes Nina is busy explaining to them that she 'thinks' that he had a heart attack, having to strike a balance between making sure that they know the important details that will help them with his care without going overboard and making it seem suspicious that she'd know that much about the man's condition based on a brief examination with no equipment. Once she's done with that, she thinks to retrieve her cellphone from the person she loaned it to, and then she finally thinks that perhaps she ought to thank the woman who stopped her from being assaulted by the man's wife.
That's when she sees that the woman is now being handcuffed by the police for some reason? "Excuse me, officer," she asks politely, "But may I ask why this woman is being arrested?" When it's explained to her, that's the second time within the span of not that many minutes that she finds herself looking at someone like they have two heads. Clearing her throat, she says, "Sir, this is a mistake. All this woman is guilty of is stopping an extremely panicked woman from assaulting me. She was right to intervene, and unfortunately she did need to be quite forceful about it. And my associate here can confirm that, as can any of the other witnesses, I'm sure." She indicates Hope knowing that, even if nobody else was paying attention to the skirmish amongst the chaos of that moment, the woman would have been extremely aware of it since it was a potential threat to the person she was protecting if it got out of hand.
Hoping that will be enough to convince the officers to at least verify her story before they haul the innocent woman off to jail, Nina turns to her and comments, "And if the charges against you aren't dropped right now, I'm going to hire you a fancy lawyer who will get you out of this scot free - it's the least that I can do for someone who helped me." Well, technically the least that she can do is nothing, but she also happens to be much wealthier than she looks in spite of the fact that she's not one to enjoy having a lot of money - throwing it into a worthy cause like keeping a good Samaritan out of prison is certainly a good use of her money. Hopefully, though, the police officers will simply listen to reason and realize that perhaps a hysterical woman is not the best source of information about who assaulted who.

Zinda had seen the cop's type plenty of times. Trigger happy, gung-ho, reckless. The type that prefers to shoot first and ask questions later. A novice in other words. Zinda had seen the type before only she'd seen them wearing soldier uniforms instead of police ones. The type that could a teammate killed because of reckless stupidity. Out to make a name for themselves first and foremost. It was all she could do to keep from pasting this cop with a right cross. It would have solved nothing and by the tie she felt metal sliding into place around her wrists it was unnecessary.
Not only were some of the other customers now protesting but the woman Zinda had saved by this time stepped back t the forefront and really went to bat defending her. With a look of disgust that indicated someone may have just urinate in his cereal bowl, Officer "friendly" removed the cuffs and was gone within a few minutes while Zinda didn't spare him any dirty looks in his wake before turning her attention back to the scene at hand. Apparently the woman refereed t as an associate was some sort of bodyguard. That as an educated guess or maybe instinct in Zinda's part while she flexed her wrists and shook off the inconvenience. Quite the fine mess a soldier gal could get herself into just trying to play good Samaritan and do her civic duty in this town.
That was awfully kind of you, Miss. I'm glad I was able too hello even if somehow I get the inkling your friend could have handled it without me. As long as I was here I couldn't just stand by and let chaos erupt without liftin' a finger, ya know? She added, her California accent bleeding through. By now people in the restaurant were actually cheering her without knowing her name. A far cry from what Zinda came here for: A quiet morsel in obscurity. Not here anymore was that likely to be found.
Still she supposed it would be rude to just walk out after all this and her stomach was revolting at the thought of heading off to elsewhere. The name is Zinda by the way, pleasure meeting you. She gave a quick wave and a small smile, assuming that the other woman and her companion were ready to move back to their lives at this point while she pulled out a chair and started to sit though she wouldn't say no to company and maybe a friendly ear at this point either.

When the officer decides to let the woman go, Nina can't help the look of satisfaction that comes to her face. Justice may be easier to find in Gotham than it was a decade ago, but it's still hit or miss at times so she's glad that it will happen here without too much of a fuss. And, perfectly happy to have said what she'd said in the woman's defense, Nina smiles when she's complimented.
"Oh, trust me - it was a good thing you stepped in," she says first, as she's sure that she wouldn't have liked how Hope would have handled it though she won't say that in front of the woman, who has taken up an observant position a bit behind her. Far enough away to give Nina her space, but close enough to intervene in an instant if she has to, and to hear what they're saying. "And I totally understand - it's instinct. Same thing happened to me when someone asked for a doctor," she adds with another smile and a nod, referring to the speed with which she responded herself. She can more than empathize with that instant instinct to step in when you see something going down you know you can help with.
When Zinda introduces herself, Nina is quick to do respond with her own name, "Doctor Nina Stenet, and the pleasure's all mine." And there's only a brief pause before she asks, "Can we - I mean, I - treat you to lunch?" She stumbles over the pronoun - if Shawty was here it would have been 'we', but Hope is unlikely to sit and join the conversation so she doesn't count. "Since you won't need that fancy lawyer, I can feed you at least," she adds with a smile and vague gesture toward the table she'd been sitting at before it all started - she'd barely had two bites of her salad when she'd abandoned it in favor of responding to the call for a doctor.

And it was a good thing you stepped in. For me at least. Zinda murmured to herself, a flood of awkward questions she would have been forced to answer if the cops had escorted her out of here flooded her membrane and without a doubt moone would have believed her story. Hell, Zinda herself still didn't believe the truth. Well, you've certainly either got confidence or a lot of guts, doctor Stenet. Maybe both r maybe you've just got ice water runnin' through your veins the way you set about your business without batting an eye when that woman tried to strangle you. I admire that kind of fortitude in a person.
She quickly and deftly returned her pistol to it's hiding place, yet a other sign f what a baboon the officer was in that she was able yo get it back from him with ease, he was so worked up. Not like she stole it, it was hers in the first place. Her eyes than did a slow intake of the surroundings again including the bodyguard, but in a way that was subtle, not letting on she was paying such close attention to detail. Chalk it up to a soldier's instincts. Where she came from a person could die before their next breath was taken by neglecting to stay vigilant.
She had just stooped over to re-tie one of her sneakers when the good doctor offered to buy her lunch. She was smiling on the inside for a moment or two before it visually stretched across her lips. If she had been wearing her hat she would have tipped it right about now. She wouldn't ask for anything but she was hoping for a little company, that's all. This was above and beyond what she expected and considering her finances were n life support technically, she of course willingly accepted the invitation. You really don't owe me nothin' but that's downright generous of you, ma'am. She answered back, standing bolt upright again. I accept. I take it you come Jun here often enough to know how good the vittles are? She smiled and motioned with a flick of a wrist for Nina to lead the way.

Smiling at the compliment, but also a just a little bit embarrassed, Nina says, "I think that was confidence - I was too busy worrying about the man to worry about anything else." And it certainly helped that she knew that even if Hope weren't around it would have been an easy matter to stop the woman with her gift. Of course, that would have been much, much harder to explain to the onlookers. "It certainly takes confidence or guts to tackle a woman that distraught," she says in return with a somewhat amused smile.
Now that the crisis is over, and both the EMTs and the police have left or are leaving while everyone else is moving along with their day, Nina appears to be quite calm after the ordeal in spite of the drama of the situation - neither the distress of the man or his wife has left any lasting impact on her mood. Instead her focus and her kind curiosity is directed towards this Zinda who has so easily proved her character with her deeds. "It's not about owing you, it's about thanking you," she replies with a smile, leading the way back to her table. On the way she answers, "And honestly, I usually just get a salad here so I wouldn't know. But the salads here are good, so that's a good sign."
As she takes a seat, Hope resumes her position a few feet away, once again not sitting and instead surveying the cafe with a suspicious eye - including an occasional glance at Zinda. Not only is she a bodyguard, but she's one who takes the job extremely seriously. Nina ignores that, though, and catches the attention of a waiter with a wave, gesturing towards Zinda to indicate that he has a new customer. He nods and immediately brings a menu and roll of silverware for her.
"Anything you want, even the steak," Nina says, referencing the most expensive items on the menu - a few different options for the real steak connoisseur. Or in other words, she wants Zinda to order whatever she wants and not worry about taking too much advantage of her generosity - the prices here just aren't high enough for Zinda to do that without making her stomach explode. Not that this place is incredibly cheap, but because Nina is feeling extremely generous and isn't exactly short on funds.

The good doctor's explanation seemed logical enough. Logical enough to Zinda at least. One can't afford distractions doing what she does for a living, or what she used to do, anyway,or one ends up pushing up daisies before they can blink. A rare breed. Just doin' what comes naturally, missy. Doin' what comes naturally. So far so good with n o questions about her 911 faux pas. It came as a shock however, just how quickly everyone went back to their business and were now saying little to no attention to her. Don't get her wrong, she wasn't looking the gift horse in the mouth but it made her wonder what kind of city this really was. She was very much still learning and they acted like this kind of thing happened every hour in the hour, as if it were routine. So much has happened, so many things have changed, so much to learn and adapt to.
Yeah, you could say she felt bewildered on the way to Miss Stenet's table. You could say the roosters crow when the sun rises. You could also go outside and beat a dead horse. She kept her poise though and didn't allow herself to look flustered. Or so she hoped. She was a soldier and a damn good one, tyvm. She'd get it all together pdq.
She did occasionally shift her eyes back toward the towering, lumbering bodyguard, even after she took her seat. She knew what it was like to take her job seriously but this gal standing near her and Nina seemed to be over the top. Zinda's baby blues had a slight twinkle with their sparkle though when Nina offered her anything off the menu including the steak. She was typically polite as can be and considered herself well mannered and not the type to take too much advantage of another's generosity but her stomach unavoidedly had a grumble to it with the mention of steak. Even before she was torn out of the past it had been too long since she had a steak. I reckon I can hunker down for a steak. That looks good, along with some salad and maybe a baked potato, and your friend looks like she hasn't gotten any lately or am I wrong? She voice the last comment in a whisper with hand cupped over her mouth.

In a city the size of Gotham, while it's rare enough to witness something like that happen right in front of you, one glance at the nightly news proves that it's hardly a hiccup compared to a hundred other things that also happens in Gotham on a daily basis. And that includes the days when none of the rogues did anything - that's just statistics in action. In a city of ten million, ten people have a one-in-a-million day every day.
Nodding to reaffirm that Zinda can have everything she's listing and more, Nina blinks in surprise when the other woman's voice is suddenly a whisper and making an unrelated comment. An for a moment, she doesn't seem to know quite what to say to that. But then she clears her throat and dodges making any commentary on that question by commenting on another part of it instead. "She's not my friend," she corrects easily, as if that was the only thing to be said in response. Which is literally true as far as Nina is concerned.
And, eager to change the subject even further, she picks up her glass of lemonade as she asks, "So are you from Gotham or somewhere else?" Because, after all, she didn't invite Zinda to join her just so that she could give her food - it's also a chance to get to know someone new. Someone who made a very good first impression.

Well... Zinda's subconscious groaned silently with the dawn f a realization that crack went over like a lead balloon. The tall drink of water did seem too tightly wrapped. Nothing but serious apparently. Zinda Blake could appreciate taking your job seriously, but not yourself too seriously. And then Nina stating plainly that her bodyguard was not her friend clearly spelled tension somewhere. She wasn't even going to ask, ready to let the whole thing drop and move on.
Then the waitress had her hands free, finally to make her way back to Nina's table where Zinda ordered up a glass of iced tea, the salad, baked potato with sour cream, and steak. Well done. Then her private, random thoughts turned toward Nina herself. She seemed nice enough. Not the type of person that would make a good drinking buddy, but still nice enough Zinda hoped to be able to call her friend when this meal was over. Good lord knows one of them would be mighty nice right now.
And then the conversation turned in the direction Zinda had been dreading, but hell, she was gonna have to spill her guts and open up to someone eventually, there seemed to be n good reason why Doctor Nina shouldn't be the first to know. Whether she believed her or would call for the guys in the white coats to take her away would be the big question.
Somewhere else. Ain't that the understatement of the last 65 years. She chuckled a little, waving her hand dismissively at the seriousness of the question. Definitely somewhere else. I'm from California and the year 1950. She answered, making direct eye contact with Nina but now she was no longer laughing. At least it was 1950 for me last week at this time. I'm really 94 years old, and I have a birth certificate and identification to prove it.

Sipping her lemonade, to say that Nina wasn't expecting an answer like that would be putting it mildly. But she doesn't spit out her drink or anything like that. No, she just abruptly puts down her drink and frowns to herself, clearly trying to decide whether or not perhaps she should call in the guys with white coats.
Though what Zinda doesn't know and what stops Nina from deciding too quickly whether or not she believes it is the fact that Nina isn't one of those people who have only read about extraordinary things in the paper - she's seen a few things for herself. Never time travel, true, but other things that are perhaps nearly as fantastical. Though she's not an expert in the physics of things, she does believe that such a thing is possible, even if it isn't at all likely.
Then again, she wouldn't be much of a scientist if she lept too quickly into believing something to be true just because someone said so. In fact, she'd wager that the likelihood here points to Zinda being crazy. Still, the woman doesn't seem to be any sort of dangerous crazy and what harm is there in giving her at least a little benefit of the doubt?
Especially when Zinda says something about being able to prove it - again, as a scientist, Nina loves proof. "Can I see them?" she asks once she has her thoughts together, referring to the mentioned birth certificate and identification. If she can see such things for herself, then that would certainly make it easy to tell whether or not Zinda is crazy. All she does know for certain is that Zinda certainly isn't 94 years old physically.

Before the opportunity to reach for her pockets and pull out the roof Nina sought presented itself, the waitress came and left after delivering Zinda's tea with a slice of lemon dangling off the rim of the glass. The soldier gal could keep a straight poker face better than alot of people, but inside there were a few butterflies taking up residence within the pit of her stomach. Spending time either behind bars or in a padded from wearing a jacket with no sleeves wasn't on her list of things to do for the rest of her life. Nina was understandably skeptical. Asking to see Zinda's identification was confirmation of that fact, but at least she wasn't yelling for the boys in blue to return and finish what they started. Not that Nina struck Zinda as the yelling type n the first lace, so that was a relief.
After a quick sip of her beverage, Zinda nodded assent at the other woman and reached into her purse, pulling out both the government issued military I.D. and a small copy of her birth certificate. I know I must sound crazy, but it's been even crazier for me. She answered, hand now extended with the documents wedged between her fingers. I'm a soldier. One minute I was in the middle of a fight and the next something, some kind of invisible force, I could feel it grabbing at me. Everything became a blur and now here I am. A slight sigh left her lips, another drink quenched them as she looked for further reaction from the doctor.

Taking the offered documents, Nina's eyes scan over them quickly and then pause. They go distant for a couple of moments as if she's pondering, but then she glances up at Zinda before they return to the documents again. There's another long pause as she seems to ponder again - clearly she's taking her time to make up her mind about this. But when she finally does, her eyes widen as she looks up at Zinda with a very surprised expression.
Nina's gift is very subtle - it's impossible to even tell that she's using it or what it does unless you already have some idea that she has one and at least some of what she can accomplish with it. But after reading the documents with her eyes, she also verified that they were genuine by looking at them with her gift. Still, that wasn't absolute confirmation - in spite of her gift she's no expert on such things.
She is an expert on the human body. Her first glance at Zinda was actually to help orient herself so that she could look at the woman's internal chemical structure. It's as easy to tell on the inside as the outside that the person in front of her is aged a mere 30 years, but that plus the documents only proves so much - they could still easily be forged or refer to the woman's grandmother or something. But while many cells in the body get shifted around fast enough that a week in Gotham would erase any sign of the decades spent in another time, that's hardly true of the whole body and Nina knows where to look. While some things haven't changed in that time, the chemical environment has changed dramatically and many of the substances a person is exposed to end up locked away in certain tissues - the bones especially. Science has advanced in that time and so has the chemicals, and the bones of Zinda have the chemicals of many decades ago in them and not the modern ones.
But rather than saying that, her eyes suddenly shift over to Hope and Nina frowns with a suspicious expression on her face. Which isn't seen by Hope, who is keeping an eye on the other customers primarily, but clearly Nina is now concerned about the fact that the woman is within earshot. Holding out the documents so that the woman can take them back, Nina says, "That's a very unbelievable story, you know. Everyone knows that the documents from that long ago are much easier to forge than modern ones."
Yet though her words indicate disbelief, she does everything she can to make sure that Zinda can see that that she's only saying those things for Hope's benefit and that in reality her mind is currently boggling over the fact that she knows that she's being told the truth. And for added measure, she subtly points in the woman's direction and slowly shakes her head. While Hope is hardly supposed to be spying on her or anything like that, she's willing to bet that someone who has actually time traveled would be groundbreaking enough for word to get to Lex - and that the man would be all over that. Better for Zinda if he doesn't know, and hopefully the woman will catch on that it's really important for Hope to not know.
Still, that doesn't mean that Nina can't, won't, or doesn't want to help her, so she adds, "But if you're desperate enough to come up with that story, you must really need some help. I can do that." The offer is instant and easily given, just like her offer of the meal. Never mind that she's sure that anything Zinda might need would probably be more substantial than a good steak, but it would not be difficult for Nina to do that for her.
