It had been a horrendous day for Pooka. She had been having a horrible day. The worst possible day. Especially for a dog of her calibre. She had been great in her day. A great dog. A wonderful dog. She had played with the kids, had loved them… it had been great. It had been glorious.
She had been great at fetch, marvelous at running, the queen of chasing her tail! The kids loved her! They gave her treats all the time, let her share their bed.
The last she remembered of the kids was a lot of sticky blood. And then she got scared; gunshots! They were so loud! So she ran.
Gotham was not a good place to be. Even for a stray. She missed her family, but no one cared much. Trash became dinner. She did this for years. Did her best to keep up with it. Did her best to live. But she was struggling. The new dogs in the area were a bit tougher than an old golden retriever.
She felt so wary. The world was so horrible. And now, it was raining.
What was worse than Gotham in the rain?
Her paws were cracked and bleeding as she made her way through the muck of the bridge.
And then, came the car.
“You sure you want to—“ Oliver wasn’t paying a lot of attention to the road, his hand was running along Dinah’s inner thigh, giving it a possessive, playful squeeze. His eyes were on her—and then the headlights crested at the peak of the bridge.
Oliver Queen’s car had a need of being serviced. Oliver Queen had neglected his maintenance on the vehicle, because he was so caught up in making Dinah so deeply in love and entrapped into him. He needed her; it was carnal and unnatural; a dangerous need.
It had superseded all else. His need to ensnare and keep her. To hold on to her…
And there was the dog, walking in the road.
Oliver hardly had time to react. He slammed on the brakes; the car skidding in the rain and the accumulation of water…. the tires’ tread wasn’t good enough. The car went off the bridge.
The barrier broke, and the car fell into the water.
Airbags deployed as the car hit water. The car’s emergency systems weren’t made for the roughness of the water in the storm. The buckling of the frame made the doors stay stuck shut. There was no option. The car began to sink….
Pooka watched the car sink into the water. She watched as the car sank into the waves. ‘Fuck it’, thought Pooka, and launched herself into the water after the car.
The water felt cold and hitting it, as the water wracked her lithe, underfed body. She hit the water as the taillights of the car began to flicker, the water about as hard as cement. The first few gasps of water were salty and horrid. She hit the water so hard…. and then the burn in her lungs as she tried to struggle…
And the lights went out for Pooka. The waste of a good dog.

Dinah was laying on the airbag as it deflated, she was dangling forward, the seat belt bit into her skin as the car began to sink. She was dazed and it was hard to think. The water gurgling around them as they started to sink into the water. It was like a rush of going underwater without the water hitting you yet.
The world seemed to move in slow motion, silent. Is this what it feels like to die? She felt like she should be doing something. Fighting. Moving. But her brain didn't seem to fathom the danger she was really in.
She looked at the darkness in front of her and it just didn't click yet.
She turned toward Oliver. "Did you... Did you hit the dog?"

Oliver could feel the blood on his face, his nose broken... The cold sting of the water as it began to creep up on them... seeping in through the engine, the ventilation system. The world became dark as the surf slammed the car around and Oliver's head smacked against the window.
He was dazed as he fought to get out of his seatbelt, slumping forward.
"No... I didn' hit the dog..." He reached for Dinah, wanting.... needing to hold her.
This was it, wasn't it?
This was going to be the end...

Dinah shook her head. Took his hand. "My head hurts," she mentioned as the water started to cover her feet. It was icy and she pulled her feet away from it. "I love you Oliver," she said not really thinking through that they should be escaping but she had a cut on her head. Likely a concussion from the airbag.

"I love you, too, Dinah..." He said, moving to try to get to her, to get his arms around her. He felt dizzy, he felt like he was going to pass out. He was trying desperately not to, and it was not easy at all, to say the very least.
Everything was hazy... and it was cold, and smelled of gasoline, oil, and dirty fishy salt water. "God, Dinah... I'm sorry..."

The apology started her into her woman feelings and she started to cry as she was cradled into his arms getting closer. The water was rising, it was up to the seats as he held her. Neither of them were using their brain, neither of them trying to survive as the water continued to rise.
Higher and Higher it went until they were gasping for breath at the top, still hold each other hands.
It was the first breath under the water that scared her the worst. When it didn't provide her with oxygen and it simply made her gasp again. She held onto Ollie for as long as she could until her body struggled to find air.
She tried then. It was too late.
Each time she gasp for breath she got another lung full of water until her body couldn't handle it, the lack of oxygen killing her as she drowned.

Oliver gasped in the water, and despite the struggling, he held close to Dinah, clung to her, as he choked, unable to sputter.
The water burned his lungs, and he couldn't choke it out; only more came. He kept holding to her. She would die in his arms. He would die in hers. They had done all they could, in their already incapacitated state.
The body of Pooka sank with the car...
The car, eventually, would be recovered. Two bodies, clinging together in a tangle of water-bloated and mostly decomposed limbs, eyes purely white... It would take the coroner's office almost a week to determine the identity of the newlywed couple.
Oliver Jonas Queen. Dinah Lance Queen. Cause of death: Drowning Coroner's Note: Fractures to skull consistent with car accident of 60+ MPH on both victims.
Officer's Notes: Car did not brake before striking guard. Rail could not sustain vehicle going over 75MPH. Indication of swerve; unknown cause. Rain definitely component to accident. Cause determined accidental.
Pooka's body, however, was never recovered.
