It had been four days, FoUr DaYs, since he had his last fix. He was getting desperate and he couldn’t think of much else to do than to rob the local pharmacy down the street. It was a place that got hit all the time, they wouldn’t mind one more. To make extra precautions they would now bar the doors up tight with a bolt lock, to make sure no one got in. But that’s why he had bolt cutters tonight. He tipped the noses up to the bolt and pulled the arms together hard. With a bit of force the gate cut right open and gave him access to the doors.
Zsasz came up to the doors and tried to open them. Locked. The door was too big to bust through but he wasn’t going to give up so easily. The owner seemed proud of the fancy door security that he had earned and they keys were probably not far away. He slid his hands over the doorframe and under the welcome mat inside the cage until his fingers slipped over metal. He pulled out the pharmacy key and let himself inside.
A noisy pounded into his ears immediately; it was like an insufferable child screaming into his brain. The alarm system had been tripped. The owner certainly was proud of this little store on the east side of town. As long as the alarm was going it would only be a matter of time before the owner was alerted and the police would arrive, but it didn’t matter. Victor walked up to the box on the wall and slammed the bolt cutters into it, making the alarm abruptly stop. Just because the sound had went away didn’t guarantee that the alarm was no longer tripped, but he’d take his chances for the moment.
Victor dropped the bolt cutters and immediately went over the counter to the back wall. He wasn’t looking for anything in particular, just something that was strong and read drowsy on the side effects. He wanted something that would at least come close to the stuff he’d get on the street and he knew that this was his best shot. It was different than getting the little pills they gave him at Arkham Asylum, those made him feel funny and it wasn’t the kind he enjoyed. He just needed something to hold him over until he was able to go get what he really needed, but that required money or someone willing to give it up to him.
While he was rummaging through a mountain of pills on the shelf a glimmer of light caught his eye. In the corner of the little shop was a pinball machine, but it wasn’t just any pinball machine. It lit up and sparkled as the little bulbs brightly glowed one by one, back and forth over the neatly curved letters, Casino. He couldn’t bear not to go back over the counter and stand in front of the quaint little machine. For the moment he had forgotten about the pills that he’d come for and became distracted with trying to make the machine work, if only he had some change laying around he could probably play with it, to win big you had to start small.
The fact that it wasn’t going to return money to him never crossed his mind instead he went back over the counter and beat the register until it popped open. He took a wad of cash in his hands and grabbed a handful of quarters. His mission for this little trip had changed, at least for the moment he wanted to try the machine. He couldn’t help himself; it was just a little thrill. He put his quarter into the machine and pulled back the dial to send the ball flying. The sounds of the game buzzed and it lit up with each press of the buttons.
