"St Swithin's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithun's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain na mair"
There was a bright flash of a photo bulb, the interior of the building being reviewed by the police. Uniformed officers were establishing cordon tape, the lights were being set up, bright flood lights casting deeper shadows and illuminating the grey and dust and the shock red of blood.
The Cathedral was once intended to be the spiritual center of the city, with stone gargoyles and tolling bells watching over Gotham from its towers; designed conceptually to keep evil at bay, the Cathedral once dwarfed the surrounding buildings of Gotham, although that time had long passed. The interior was cold and gothic, lit by dim lights full of nothing but nooks and crannies, remnants of wood and marble carvings from an older era filling the room.
The land on which the present cathedral sits was purchased in 1810. The Jesuit community built a college on the site, three miles north of the city. It contained a "fine old house," which was fitted with a chapel of St. Ignatius. In 1840 the Dioceses re utilized the and as a monastery, and in 1858 the dioceses began construction of the cathedral, consecrated to St. Swithun, Patron Saint of Gotham and the Weather. Fine mahogany pews lined the giant hall, with the great overarching rafters above collecting shadows the way that age gathered regrets.
The room was dimly lit, illuminated by the post lights that sought to brighten the scene, the focus was on the body, one arm lurched over a pew, now stained with blood. His collar showed he was well vested as a priest, the darkness of the frock sought to hide the blood, but the collar showed it clear. He'd written a last message with his blood, "Corruptio Optimi Pessima." and he was pale, the blood starting to pool in his extremities, on the ground. Nearby - several bullet casings, 9mm. He'd been shot several times, a hole seems to have appeared on the chest of the giant statue of St. Swithin, standing holding a shepherd's crook in one hand, a cathedral in the other.
The interior of the building was made up largely of the hall, although the Archbishop's Sacristy was located to the side of the altar, and there were offices at corners. Individual confessionals were located about the sides of the building, along with the stations of the cross.
Gotham Cathedral: The scene of the crime
The facts as presented on arrival:
Call came in 2344, multiple gunshots heard by neighbor, 52 year old Ezeikiel Skabowski. One witness saw a medium sized figure in overcoat running from the front of the building at 2345, clutching some sort of something under the arm. Unclear gender, unclear race, unclear age, although the witness suggested it might be a male, just based on the shoulders and build, but the witness couldn't confirm that on the phone call.
The perpetrator ran into the Cathedral Square Subway Terminal, according to Skabowski, but unfortunately due to lack of glasses, he wasn't able to see much.
First arrival at the scene found the cathedral empty, Uniforms secured the perimeter as best as possible, but the crime scene wasn't secured until 0021, detectives arrived on the scene at 0055, lights were brought in by MCU, the crime scene has yet to be reviewed. A telephone call to the Archbishop was made at approximately 0030, he has yet to arrive on the scene or respond. A few of the priests are outside awaiting questioning.
A single footprint of blood is visible on the ground near the dead priest, but it's only a partial imprint.
