Ever since Eve Avery had arrived in Gotham City, Jason Bard had been on her mind. A lot. She couldn’t even begin to count the number of times she had thought about picking up her cel phone and calling him. He was a dear friend. Well, he was more than a friend. Too bad he was the type of person who ran from commitment. Instead of embracing Eve, he embraced his mistress – his career as a detective for the Gotham City Police Department. Although she knew his job was his main priority, Eve still wanted to be a part of Jason’s life, but he denied her that happiness, along with his own.
He loved her. She knew that. She’d never doubted it for a second. They had met when new leads involving a cold case in Gotham City brought him to San Francisco, where Eve was working on the police force. The first time they laid eyes on one another, there had been an immediate attraction. They just clicked, and it wasn’t long before they became good friends. After Jason had returned to Gotham, Eve broke up with her then-boyfriend Brad Gibbons, a fellow police officer. She and Jason kept in touch, but living on opposite coasts didn’t help flourish their relationship. Soon the phone calls got fewer and fewer. The next thing Eve knew, six months had passed without hearing a word from him.
They were better together, and miserable apart. She learned that when Brad was killed in a sting operation and Jason flew in for the funeral to be there for her. That was when they reconnected – emotionally and physically. So why wouldn’t he just marry her so they could live happily ever after? She had already asked him several times in the past, and he had answered in the negative every single time. She reflected on his reason.
Age.
Jason and Eve shared a “May-September Romance” – a romantic relationship where one partner is significantly older than the other. Jason had hit forty, and Eve was still in her twenties. Fifteen years didn’t matter one way or the other to Eve. She loved Jason for who he was – the person inside. To Eve, age was just a number. Why didn’t he believe her?
Eve was meeting Jason for breakfast. She had no clue how that would go. Well, in a way, she did, and it excited and frustrated her at the same time. Although it was a new town for her, she and Jason would be traveling down the same old path – on the road to nowhere. She hated the way he loved her, keeping his heart guarded and a safe distance from her. Perhaps this time she could get through the walls he’d ever-so-carefully built? Every time she got serious about their relationship, Jason always retreated inside himself, making himself emotionally unavailable to her. She wondered if he had changed since Brad's funeral. Perhaps he would react differently to her this time? She tried to stay optimistic, but she had her doubts. That was one thing she appreciated about Jason. Besides being handsome, courageous, and responsible, he was also consistent and predictable. Oh, well. He was almost perfect.
As Eve drove to the restaurant, she played the scenario of what would happen between them over and over again in her mind. Just imagining the look in his eye when he saw her gave her butterflies. What would she say -- “I love you”? Yes, that would be a great ice-breaker, wouldn’t it?
When she arrived at the restaurant, Eve parked her car. She knew Jason was already inside waiting for her. He was always punctual. That was his way. She, on the other hand, was fashionably late this morning. In a way, she was glad because she didn’t want to appear too eager to be with him, even though on the inside she was shaking with excitement and was about ready to burst.
Upon entering the establishment, Eve scanned the dining area and saw a familiar face in the crowd, seated in a corner booth and reading a menu. Inhaling sharply, she crossed the room, closing the distance between them.
When she got to the table, Eve didn’t say a word. The passionate kiss she gave Jason said more than words ever could.
