Wonder Woman locked eyes with the gunman as she crashed through the glass doors of the brick building. A bank robbery was in progress!
When the lone gunman fired his weapon at her, the warrior woman caught the bullets on her bracelets with the slightest of ease. “Surrender now and I promise I won’t hurt you!” she said, raising her hands and showing empty palms, in what she hoped was a signal of peaceful intentions.
Meanwhile, the man tightened his grip on his hostage’s throat, making her wince and scream. “Save me, Wonder Woman!” she wailed.
When Diana took a step forward, the gunman jerked his arm and trained his weapon at the teller’s forehead.
“Take another step, and she’s a dead woman!” he bellowed for everyone to hear. “I mean it! I’ll kill her! I have nothing left to lose!”
Diana looked on, her posture fearless and determined. Calculating the risk involved, she decided to stand down. Even with her lightning reflexes, she wouldn’t be able to save the woman in time.
Hera, help me! the Amazon Princess prayed inside her mind.

In Gotham City, day time meant two things: one, that Batman and his motley crew were nowhere to be found; and two, that the ice cream carts were out and about on Gotham's South side. John had discovered the dessert carts when he had first moved to Gotham, and from that point on he made sure to stop there at least once a week. On today in particular, he was happily licking at a double scoop cone: one cookies and cream, the other mint chocolate. My, how humans could produce such a treat made him wonder how they could be so cruel to one another. But it was as John was about to go in for a large bite that he suddenly dropped the cone and doubled over in pain, his hands flying up to grip his head. Though one would think so, it actually wasn't a case of brain-freeze. Instead John had picked up the mental shout of a very important person, one that he had specifically trained himself to always hear cry out for help...and one that he hadn't heard in quite a long time. Without hesitation (okay, maybe only to briefly mourn his splattered ice cream on the ground)), the detective made haste for a nearby alleyway, where his Martian physique was already shaping into something green - and something mean. Meanwhile, at the bank... "I'm telling you, lady! Not one step closer!" The desperate gunman screamed out at the Amazonian princess, sweat running down what was revealed of his brow behind the half-mask that covered his face. He was more afraid than anything else, which made him even more dangerous to the teller that he now held hostage. Thankfully for all involved, help had already arrived. A large green hand suddenly emerged from the forehead of the failed robber, with his eyes rolling up into the back of his head seemingly in response. At the same exact moment, a second green hand appeared literally out of thin air and grabbed the pistol. The intangible scramble to the gunman's nervous system meant that he had no means to fire the gun, but still, it was best not to take any chances. A moment after the thug fell in an unconscious heap, the owner of the two green hands began to materialize into view. Though his facial features were softer and a mop of red hair now adorned his head, it was still quite clearly the J'onn J'onzz that Diana would remember."Though my name is not Hera, I believe I arrived just in time." And that voice. That same deep, inhuman, but somehow soothing voice. It was J'onn, alright, especially with the small smile that followed.

When she saw Martian Manhunter appear, Wonder Woman felt herself smile, felt her heart leap for joy at the sight of a familiar face. Her countenance was as radiant and beautiful as ever, framed by her golden tiara and her dark, glossy hair. Effortlessly, she ran to the aid of the teller and made sure the woman was in the safety of her co-workers before greeting her Justice League comrade.
“Oh, J’Onn!” the Amazon Princess whispered to him, her words soft and guarded. Without warning, she threw her arms around him and gave him a warm hug. The tight embrace lasted longer than expected. “I knew if I called upon the gods, they would hear me! What summoned you here? How did you know where to find me?”
Pulling away, Wonder Woman’s eyes were shining with excitement. She took both of Martian Manhunter’s hands in hers and held them as she continued speaking.
“It’s so good to see you again, my friend! What are you doing in Gotham City?”
As she waited for his answer, she studied his features. She couldn’t believe how good he looked. She smiled at his new hairdo. Fond memories of them serving together in the Justice League flooded her mind.
“It has been too long since our last conversation,” she continued, eyeing the police officers who were now entering the building. “There is so much I want to tell you, J’Onn. I don’t know what your schedule is like, but would you like to go somewhere and catch up?”
Wonder Woman cherished her friendship with Martian Manhunter. Her care and concern for her alien ally was genuine.

Just like in the old days, J'onn knew that he could rely on Diana to immediately take care of the hostages. A glance was given down to the fallen form of the would-be robber, whose unconscious thoughts he now read. "A pity. He merely wanted to feed his family..." He shook his head, a bit of red hair falling over his forehead as he did so. Hopefully the man could find some sort of solace in prison.
But the time for mourning the robber's ill decision drew to a close as soon as Diana's arms wrapped around him. It caught him off-guard at first, but as soon as he realized it, he placed an arm around her bare shoulders as well. Although Diana was quite tall for a female, J'onn's 6'7" was very tall for a male, and so he could only hug her shoulders from that height. Not that he minded.
"You did." He smiled down at her with the joy that only seeing an old friend could bring. "Your mental anguish. I could hear it... just like when we were on the League. Your's is a mental signature I'll never forget." He couldn't stop smiling. Why couldn't he stop smiling? Diana taking his hands into her own didn't help any, as it only made his grin widen. Stop with the smiles, damnit.
"I'm...building a life." As the police now swarmed the building, the Martian believed it was time they made their exit. With Diana's hand still in his own, J'onn guided the two of them out of the building. It was better that he explain it away from burning eyes.
"I'd like that very much, Diana, so that I may better explain."For now, he released her hand, and then immediately began to hover in the air, inviting the Amazon to join him. As soon as she did, they were off, flying along side of one another.
~As I was saying, I'm building a life.~ It was far easier to communicate telepathically while flying, not to mention that it was more...intimate. It was a sign that he treated her as an equal, speaking with her in the same way that he spoke with his own people. Telepathy was the primary form of communication for Martians after all. ~I've taken a "secret identity," as Clark calls it, and I'm working as a detective with the Gotham City police. With the high spike in crime lately, I figured that Bruce wouldn't mind having a super-ally on the police force...not to mention the GCPD could use their own superpowered insider.~ He smiled over to Diana as they now reached the clouds. ~I'm on a bowling team as well. But do not ask me about my high score...~
The Martian Manhunter finally stopped some 30,000 feet above the Earth, where he turned to look at his ally. The winds at this height blew his red hair all about, giving it a messy look. It was a sensation that he welcomed after living without hair for so long. ~What about you? What have you been doing in all of this time, Diana?~

After they had embraced, Diana looked up at J’Onn towering above her and smiled, fully aware that her tall, perfect figure still made him feel gawky and overlarge against her. She could tell by his facial expression that he was happy and excited to see her. He made her feel very special when he explained about knowing her unique mental signature and how he had felt her anguish in his mind. She nodded solemnly, intrigued by learning that he was in the process of building a life for himself on Earth in Gotham City.
Before J’Onn could go into more detail about that, one of the police officers interrupted him to get a statement. Turning and forcing her face into what she thought was a neutral expression, Diana spoke for them both and gave her statement, all the while holding and squeezing J’Onn’s hand, signaling for him to be patient. Less than five minutes later, the two heroes were alone again.
When J’Onn suggested that they find a place where they could be alone and talk, Diana nodded in agreement and allowed him to escort her out of the building. The alien’s presence was a great solace for the princess.
Can you still sense my thoughts? Diana’s voice whispered gently in his mind as he hovered in the air and invited her to join him in flight. I remember what you taught me.
When he responded in like manner, she knew he was receiving her projected thoughts clearly.
Like all the members of the Justice League, Martian Manhunter knew Wonder Woman was Diana of Themyscira, an Amazon who was quite gifted with strength and other abilities. She didn’t need to be protected by anyone, for any reason. She was a warrior, but most of all, J’Onn knew she was a woman with deep feelings and emotions. In the early stages of their budding friendship, he had learned that she was very passionate. She had always been real and emotionally close with him. To speak to him telepathically was not foreign to her. In fact, she preferred it.
As they flew upwards, Diana heard J’Onn’s voice inside her head and felt a comfort and peace that had been denied her restless spirit for far too long. She welcomed the intimacy.
She didn’t feel so alone.
Diana wasn't sure what to say when J’Onn told her that he had adopted a secret identity as a detective in the Gotham City Police Force. She smirked at his comment about being on a bowling team. It sounded like something he’d do to blend in with the locals.
When they stopped and hovered in mid-air, Diana watched J’Onn’s hair blowing in the wind. She liked it.
You know I took a sabbatical from the Justice League when my sister died, Diana answered after J’Onn made his inquiry. Just recently, I returned to my mission as Wonder Woman in Man’s World. I apologize for not keeping in touch with you, but . . .”
Diana stopped herself, not wanting to fabricate a lie for an excuse.
I’ve returned to my life, and I’ve found that there really isn’t much of a life to return to.
She didn’t want to go into detail about the difficulty she was having fitting in and adjusting, but she knew J’Onn could sense it. Taking a deep breath, she continued.
So, like you, my friend, I am building a life, as well. Praise Gaea! The fates have been kind. We seem to be journeying together in Gotham City. Perhaps we will see each other from time to time.
Diana smiled.
I’d like that.
