She tried, she really did, to say something after he did. Instead she just imitated a fish several times before clinking her own glass to his before tossing another shot down. It burned, but didn't satisfy the pain in her gut, the ache in her chest.
Setting it down, she was reminded of their younger years. When she had been caught with a flask. When they'd talk about school, and what he did at work. When she wanted so badly to vent about the stuck up bitches at Miss Corrine's, and instead talked about the little black cat she's befriended and sat in trees with.
Turning her head to the knock at the door, she'd forgotten about their meal. And the time. Her 'meetings' could wait. Fishing her phone out of her pocket, she sent a few texts quickly, and made a quiet phonecall to cancel. As Theo moved, she was silent, and let him plate their food with a certain aplomb that had been taught to them both.
At his snarky words, she cracked a smile, too, shaking her head slightly. "You know you'd get shit for a joke like that. I read both letters. I think it's only fair you read mine, too." She pointed her fork at the second piece of paper she'd set atop his. And the envelope she hadn't been able to will herself to peek inside.
Even considering who she was.
And all the jokes about cats and their curiosity.
Catwoman didn't care about a shiny bauble.
What the fuck was the world coming to?

Harvey eyed the letter. He was unsure if he wanted to read it, given what his said. After a moment he finally sighed and took it. He read it over and at the end his face frowned down into a grimace. He set it back down.
"What?! An unmade bed?! Do I look like an unmade bed?! Look, I even got cufflinks now!"
Harvey felt the need to prove he's improved his ways. He was quite touched by the rest of the letter, but the end of it... His mother was just as ornery as he was. They both took jabs at eachother, he just didn't get to have the last word and he was a little miffed. Delilah, even being gone as long as she had been gone now, could still make her blush, get defensive, and shed a tear.
Harvey just begrudgingly began to focus on his food and after a minute or two he looked over to Selina. He thought about something and caught himself chuckling a little.
"Ah, damn."
He picked the envelope up, taking a break in the meal, and emptied it into his hand. The fine little antique engagement ring was in very nice shape. It was lovely, but not too flashy nor too modest. Harvey just quietly looked it over. he eventually slipped it back into the envelope and placed the envelope back in the box. At least he had a safe place to keep it.
In the past.

As he read, she started to dig in to their meal. She'd have to get the name of this place, considering she lived across the park. Not even a cab-ride away. It was only when he started to make a ruckus did she almost choke on her veal, and start coughing a bit, glaring at him.
Once she cleared her throat, she sipped her wine, and narrowed her eyes. "Was. That was written, how many years ago? And she loved you. Don't fault her for entrusting you to someone she trusted, loved, and cared for, too, Theo." Waving her hand dismissively at him, she shook her head. The letters hadn't contained easy words for either of them to read. Rolling her eyes, she started back into their rather silent meal, until his deep rumble of laughter broke the quiet.
Watching him as he shook out the small heirloom, she noted that it was of fine quality. Not gaudy, not flashing, but made well. The white gold was filigreed, the diamond and amethyst accents good stones. Even as she squinted, she could still make it out as a fine piece of jewelry. She'd seen it enough times to know it's make, too.
As he slipped it away again, she had to wonder if he ever had thought of her...like that. There was something there, and Selina knew it, but would he accept her? Would he understand why she did it?
Was it utterly unrealistic for her to think that he would...think of her in that way? Of entertaining something that could be? She'd said, in not so many words, that she felt beneath him, to Delilah, but never for why. Swallowing her food, Selina turned back to her plate, acting nonchalantly, as if the small gesture didn't feel like a knife to the heart, re-opening the wound the initial letters had torn.

He was still focused on the box.
No, the present is better, Harvey.
He took it back out and took her hand from her a little. He opened her palm and put the ring in it.
"Look. You know me, I've never been good at... expressing or emoting, Selina."
He only tended to call her by her name when he was trying to say something important to her. He looked down at her hand for a moment and then back up to her.
"If you ever wanted to, or ever could - let me put it this way."
He took a deep breath. The was one of the hardest things he ever had in his life to say. He needed to gather himself for a moment more before he could continue on with his words.
"If you ever want that with me, then just put it on. I'll see it when you do. Nothing would make me happier than to put it on that finger of yours myself, but I'd never want you to feel like you couldn't tell me no, either, so for now, I can live with a maybe."
Harvey, still looking down at her hand, slowly closed her fingers over it. he looked up to her with a soft smile. Had he seen his face, he'd be surprised at how well he'd just done with all that. He'd rather live until his dying breath with a maybe than losing his best friend over a no. If a yes came, then it would come when the time was right, and the time would be right when she wanted it.
He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek and then again on her forehead.
"No matter what, you'll always be my favorite girl."
He stayed for a moment with his forehead against hers.

But he was interrupting her again. Eating. She had to stay focused on that. Had to. With all the rent emotions and raw feelings, she couldn't handle this right now. Not with Bruce, and ...her other life. This part of her couldn't be tainted. It was the solid glue that kept her sane. Kept her feeling somewhat real, and normal. But even as he turned her toward him, she couldn't deny the one man in her life who never hurt her, never turned her away, never did anything but the best.
So while she listened to his words; his true, honest question, she nodded, the delicate ring the most prized possession she had ever been given.
Something given. Freely. Not taken. Not stolen, even though she still felt like she was ripping something from him. But he wasn't waiting for her, was he? His life wasn't on hold, just for her maybe? She'd never be able to live with herself for thieving his future.
Feeling his strong hand close her fingertips gently around it, she could feel a wall breaking inside. A dam that she'd never fully chinked against the weather, the wind, and the rain. And now all it had taken was one gust for it to crack, and flood her heart.
Blinking her eyes, it was the purity of his smile that made it worse. He really cared. But would he still feel the same when he knew what she was? What she did? He didn't seem to back when he'd seen her in blaze orange and zipties. Not when she'd danced for his sisters. Not even when she'd graduated, and slept on his couch for several weeks, refusing to go to her own apartment.
His smile calmed her turbulent waters. His touch stilled each unasked question poised on her tongue. His kisses washed away each unshed tear, and quieted her mind.
"Always, Theo," she breathed out, their foreheads pressed together, nothing between them, her words hanging between a question, and a statement she had always believed to be a truth.

Harvey hooked his arm around eh back of his neck and his other hand smoothing over her hair as he went to sitting up straight again. He was pulling her head into his chest and smiling.
"Now don't get too gaspy, night's a bit of a ways from bein' over, eh."
Harvey leaned back into the couch again, his arm hooked around her neck and shoulder, a little similar to how he had done it earlier in the day at the park bench. He was silent in his thoughts for a moment or two and then finally he released her a little and looked to her.
"We have tiramisu, baby. You want some or you wanna wait? I can put on a little coffee to go with it, if you'd like."
Harvey reached over for the Jameson bottle and poured them each another shot. If there was anything he was really good at it was being a detective and trying to find ways to lighten the mood. He wasn't trying to cheapen his earlier words, he just didn't want the night to end on such an emotional note that the air was thick with it.
"If you're tired, we could always curl up and watch a movie. You know me, I got plenty of 'em."
Harvey's apartment was a two bedroom. The other bedroom was where he kept the bulk of his movie collection. He tended to watch them in bed or on the couch. If they ended up watching a movie together and also picked it he was going to pick something silly or surreal. Nothing too heavy. The night had been heavy enough as it was.

Gaspy. He was such an ass sometimes. Balling her fingers into a fist, she punched him, her eyes going slightly wide when she realized there was more resistance than she had known prior. "I'm not being gaspy, and you know it. Don't fault a girl for remembering a second mother she lost, Theo. You're suck a dick sometimes." She was being honest, and hoping he wasn't just going to stuff all his feelings like he tended to.
Pursing her lips, she grumped slightly before easing back into the couch, just as he had. The ring still in her hand, she looked it over in her palm, shrugging as he asked her a question. "Can we wait? Maybe until coffee is done?" She mused quietly. If they were going to talk, she'd rather it be when they were sober. But just like a man, he was off trying to fix things. It was just..there wasn't anything to fix.
As her leggings had no pockets, Selina moved to slip the ring on her right hand, before gripping at his forearm. "Harvey. Wait," She hoped he would stop before getting up. "You don't have to try and seek out something to fix. There is nothing to ..fix, right now, other than we are both...aching from losing a mother. And realizing she...saw more than we saw at the time. And she was right, you know. There is an understanding, and a ...love, between us, that..you can't really compare to. I just...don't want to complicate, and taint...what you've done for yourself." She swallowed thickly, glancing away, almost ashamed. She had to get it out, if it was now, or another night. She couldn't be the one blocking his way to happiness. He deserved so much, for he gave so much selflessly.

Harvey caught her fist. It was like a natural reflex to him. He'd had so many thrown his way through his life that he just didn't think about how he was blocking them anymore. He just did it.
He even put a firm grip over her fist. His own fist swallowed hers inside of it, a testament to just how big he was. Harvey may have been a bit skinny when he was young, and then, of course, the years of obesity later. He was a big ol' boy back then, and it wasn't all fat either. It showed even more now just how much muscle he had put on over the years under all of it. Now that much of the fat had been burned away it was quite clear there was a reason he had always had such a mean right cross all these years.
"Of course I'm a dick, you can be a little snippity yerself, sister."
And with that simple motion, blocking the punch, came a taste of that Harvey. The one with the thick east end accent and an attitude larger than life. The one that could make rookie cops and criminals alike feel fear.
Harvey the enforcer. Harvey the man with everything to prove and nothing to lose. It bit into him and took some fightin' to make him slack his jaw.
The detective offered his dangerous smile with a wink, about to get up for coffee when he was stopped. He looked over to her. He didn't really know what to say, he was a man of actions, not so much words. His words were usually loud and mean. Without any thought Harvey yanked her over into his lap and leaned down, planting one on those lips.
He'd always wanted to do it, honestly. He'd done it a few times, but that had always been them goofing off when they were younger or him greeting her at some event, just being fun. This, while still fun, did have a bit more meat to it than it had before.
The bull under bulk; the lion with a black mane; the fierce man wearing a badge.

To be honest, she hadn't thought about the fact they'd never come to blows. With his reactions, she was shocked, but only a mere second as her own reflexes kicked in. It was too bad, though, because all the soft parts of him had shifted to muscle. Muscle that clearly overshadowed her lithe form.
Narrowing her eyes, and if he noticed, she shifted. She wasn't just little sisteranymore. She had quietly gone feral, Catwoman's poise and bite infused into her casual, thrown-together outfit.
As his hand eclipsed her fist, she felt the hinted at, but not quite pain there as he held back. She felt the electric charge shift as they reverted to that in which they were; detective and feline. She knew what he could do on the streets, and he also knewwhat she could do, but not that it was her. Even as she couldn't quite move, transfixed by the nearly invisible shift. Her tongue darted from between her lips as she wet them, her head shaking as she snickered at him as he almost left her there, heart pounding.
And then she was in his lap, a tangle of limbs, and lost in his mouth. Sighing slightly into the embrace, her mind blanked. Kitten toyed with fatale, woman and warrior spun together as she felt herself being welcomed to a place that she thought could be achieved by taking that which wasn't hers; home.

There was a part of Harvey that figured she might pull away from him and just run home, but there she was, staying in the thick of it. After that thought, the rest of his thoughts faded and were just instincts. The instincts of the detective and the man.
One hand supported her, firmly propping her up at the back of her neck while also entwining its fingers in her hair; the other rested on the her hip that was opposite of him. It slid down onto the side of her leg toward her knee. The smooth legging leaving little to the imagination when it came to the shape and tone of her legs.
His hair had been getting a little longer lately, he looked best with it that way. He tended to let it get that way in the winter, but on the first hot day of the spring it was trimmed. The grizzle on his jaw and cheeks was at least two days old.
Thought and reason were thrown out for the moment and all that remained was pure instinct and feeling. Harvey may have never been one for expressing himself verbally, but he seemed to do it quite well with body language.

Her life was complicated. But complications seemed to melt away when she returned to him. A comfort in his steadfastness built on years of trust. But a tiny, niggling part of her always whispered,"But...." every time she tried. And even tonight, it was on the air, it was in every breath she inhaled.
As he shifted her, she felt like a poised, delicate doll. As they finally came up for air, she had to smile, a warm flush on her cheeks. She knew he was the take-charge sort; she'd seen it at the station more than once. But never like this.

The hint at a growl could be heard when Harvey moved her again, pulling her to straddle his hips. He knew what he was doing because he never broke the kiss. Though after about a minute like that he moved his kiss to her neck.
One hand was at her waste, content with being there, while the other was at the crook of her knee. He seemed to like putting his hand there. Something about the crook of the knee was just nice in his opinion.
He was quite careful not to press his two day old stubble too much against her soft skin. The smell of her made him feel at least twenty years younger.

She was eternally grateful she hadn't worn jeans. Instead the leather leggings and tunic were more than flexible in this instance, as she moved in to his every touch. It had been years since they'd been this close, their wrestling dwindling as she had gotten older. But he'd never really known the depths of her skill in acrobatics, or her dexterity. And she'd never known his muscles, her fingertips going to his forearm, and then his bicep. Who was this man? And did he really want to know who she was? Why he never came to her place?
Gasping slightly as he moved against her neck, she sighed in a quiet exhale, her thoughts drifting to nonchalance. ...it probably didn't even matter.

Finally Harvey did take a break. He leaned back on the couch. He took a second but he finally looked up to her. There was a stray little lock of hair in front of her face. He reached up, brushing it out of her face and tucking it behind her ear as he had done so many years before. That same expression that had been on his face then was on his face now. He was mesmerized, but this time he was not ashamed of it.
"God, Selina, you're so gorgeous. I hope I didn't... make you uncomfortable just then. I just... I couldn't stop myself. I had always wanted to do that since the night I met you, but for real."
His hands rested on her hips. He looked her over, but not in a predatory way, more a combination of hunger and admiration. His eyes made their way back up to hers.
"I don't know if I believe in God, but you could make me believe in 'im."

Coming up for air, her lungs felt on fire. Blinking several times, she couldn't keep the smile off her face. All questions she had lingering in her mind and on her heart quelled as she locked eyes with him. It's not that the same actions had crossed her mind before, it was just..she had her doubts. Not of him; never. It was just what she had become over the years. Not that she killed, or was some horror, but the unspoken scared her more and more they became closer. And even now, when his fingertips brushed her cheek, Selina became shy in an instant; a rare side he ever saw--Selina Kyle at a loss for words and blushing.
Shaking her head, the same lock of hair disengaged from behind her ear and fell whispy across her face. "I couldn't believe you were so kind to me. I ...was in scrubs and zip-tied to a chair. If I hadn't, well, there would have been a much different outcome, no doubt."
Sitting there, she was poised nearly perfect in shades of black leather and soft grey, green eyes watching where his own chocolate one's lingered. She laughed at his words, shaking off the compliment.
"I'd like to hope more worthy things would inspire such faith. I'm not all pretty eyes and pouty lips, you know."
