She furrowed her brow at him. He was having a fun time, at her expense. Or maybe that was just her mood. "Yeah, but I don't see you with any rugrats!" She volleyed, slightly proud of her own little quip. Her certainly kept her mind sharp.
Scrunching her nose, she shook her head at him. "I don't know about that, but he's pretty warm, and purrs." He sighed, and went back to eating. Part of her doubted he would even be talking to her if they both weren't a bit blitzed.

"Really, like at all?"
Harvey was a little floored, but he just shrugged it off. He continued eating, having coffee between a bite here and there.
"I think I'd make a decent dad, better than the one I had, that's for sure."
Harvey rarely ever mentioned or even referenced his own father. That was just something the Bullocks didn't talk about. There was a reason Harvey's last name was Bullock and not Lancaster. Same for his sisters, too.
"I'm sure he and I will get on just fine. He better not bring any girls over, though. I hope he's celibate."
Harvey chuckled.

She squinted at him. He seemed to not get the joke. "I don't mean, like never. I mean, just now. You work too much to be dating. Unless you're just...staying for a while, and not the whole night or something. Or you're a virgin." Yes, she went there, her eyes darting from his, and then back to her coffee, which she went back to sipping.
He really did have a way of turning a sad conversation around. But his dad comment brought her eyes back to him. "You, nor your mom, really say anything about him. At least you still have your mom. She's enough for a mom, and a dad. And your sisters have you, too." She peered back into her coffee. His family was like her family, but sometimes, she still felt out of place. Her life had been decent. Loving. Joyful.
Balling up a paper napkin, she tossed it at him. "Tom is good. He's just a cat. Comes and goes as he pleases. That's what cat's do. And...I don't know how to check a cat to see if they're celibate." She was confused at this point.

"I won't even entertain that. I am no virgin."
Harvey looked unamused, but it was all in play. Of course he wasn't a virgin, however he hadn't been with tons of ladies either. His first time had been when he was eighteen, it was terrible and he hoped he'd never see that girl again. He probably horrified her. There had been two since then, one had been a relationship that lasted about a year when he was about twenty. She broke up with him when he became at cop at twenty one because she said she'd hate herself for 'sleeping with a pig.'
The one that came after was a short lived affair, she'd been a married woman and Harvey had no idea until her husband came looking for him at the precinct.
"Just write me a list of the stuff he needs and I'll get it done."
He had a sip or two of his coffee.
"Well, I think you'll have a really good time and I'm glad you're getting out of here. Any place is safer than this. Who knows? Maybe you'll meet some really great folks and decide to stay."

Her cheeks darkened at his words. She didn't have to explain herself. So as she fiddled with her coffee, and her fork, he kept talking. "Give me a pen, and I'll do that. I think he just needs...a litterbox, cat food, I'll give you a blanket of mine. Do you think your mom would mind if I kept my trunk and maybe a box or two at her place while I'm over there? I just...don't want to leave it at the school." She didn't exactly say she didn't have anywhere to put it, but she didn't trust her aunt, and really, had no where else to put any of her few things she'd collected. Not a whole lot of it was of any value. She had a few books, an old quilt, a blanket, some bedding, a few trinkets. She was more concerned about Tom. And the people she had became close with.
"Stay in Europe? I don't know . It's college, which my dad wanted me to do. And..learning." She shrugged, blinking a few times. She didn't want to leave, but she didn't want to ask, or even worse, have to beg to stay somewhere. She might be able to get a place with the money she'd 'aquired,' but that would raise too many questions.
And she doubted overseas was any safer. "Maybe we can do something with your sisters, and Mom before I go?" She asked lamely.

"Of course. You know I got plenty of room for stuff, so just bring it over or before you go, I can take a day off and help you get it over there."
A few more sips of coffee and then he lit a cigarette.
"Well, just don't forget to have a good time while you're there. You deserve it."
He took long drags and eventually perked up at her suggestion.
"That would be great. I think Ma and the three musketeers would enjoy that. What would you like to do?"

She shook her head. He couldn't take a day off. She'd fight him over that. She could find her way from the boarding school. She had done so many a time before. That little flick of light and cigarette smoke picked her mood up near instantly, as she shoved her plate, and mug of coffee to his side, and told him to scoot. Then she was beside him, the cigarette in her fingers, then her mouth, then returned back to him. Nicotene sure felt good sometimes.
"You can't exactly take off work. Not after your promotion. What are you going to say? 'The girl I didn't bust two years ago is going away to college? Gotta help her pack?' That's going to go over well at the precinct. They'll probably heckle you or something." She sipped at her coffee, looking at the vacant place where she had just sat. There was a lot to contemplate. She had a passport, the money for her ticket, the forged papers. She just had to pick a date, a flight, and she'd be gone.
"I don't think I deserve happiness. Your mother does. And you, and your sisters for going through that shit. I...shouldn't get more than a diploma for making it through high-school." She felt like she'd lived, and was older than her years she had been on the earth. A low sigh, and she shrugged. "Something together. Maybe we can make a cake, or grill? Do you know how to do that?" She glanced at him sidewise, her elbow into his side. "Maybe we can dance for your mother. I think she'd like that."
It was the least she could do for a woman who had eked a small part of her heart out for an orphan. She'd have to get something nice for the girls, and Mrs. Bullock.

"I'm sure I got plenty of off days I can take up on that I haven't used yet, but if you insist I do get off pretty early a few days the rest of this week, so there's that."
Harvey took the last sip of his coffee and set money down on the table. The waitress came by and took their dishes and Harvey's cash.
"You can't be all down on yourself. You deserve to be happy too, baby, trust me, I know these kinds of things."
He winked to her. He was trying to turn a bad situation into a better one, all the while hiding the discontent in his own heart from her.
"I know how to grill, yes. That would be nice, a little cook out. The girls would like that, too. And dancing, hmm I dunno."

She shot him some serious side eye. Since when did he know who deserved what and why. She was not amused at his wink, but couldn't keep the smile off her face, either. "Well, I'll call or something, so we can get my stuff moved. And I want to do do something nice for your mother. She's ...been so good to me since you brought me over. My birthday. Just..all of it. I can't just go across the ocean and not say thank you. That's bad form, Theo. And I'm not talking a big production. But I have this dress I can wear, and you have enough nice shirts. Just something to show your mom and sisters. You know?"
She kept fussing with her napkin, shaking her head. He was being too something. And she couldn't pinpoint it.

Harvey finally nodded in compliance.
"Alright then. That sounds good."
The waitress brought him his change, he left it there.
"So you ready to get out of here? You can stay the night if you want. I can crash on the couch, you can have the bed."
He remembered her birthday well. It had been a good night.

"I'd rather stay over than drive back to school. And no. You're not pulling that crap again. I'll take the couch." She knew it was an argument they had nearly every time she was in town. Same shit, different day. They'd go back and forth on the topic, and then end up crashing on the couch in front of a movie, or in bed in front of a movie.
She noticed the glimmer in his eye, her fingers going to show him the necklace she still wore around her neck. She'd added a little charm to it, but had kept it unadulterated in every other way.
"Don't make me run in my heels, though!"

"C'mon. No runnin'. We can head back to the car."
Harvey got up and pulled his coat back on. He went to grab hers and helped her into it. Once that was all done with he led them out, offering her his arm for the grabbing.
The night air was cold, brisk, and felt pretty nice, especially from under a warm coat.
"So, how long you think you'll be over there in Europe? Think you'll be able to come visit over the summer or for Christmas?"

It was nice to have someone help her into her jacket. Smiling at him in thanks, her arm lined with his. He was always thoughtful. She silently thanked Delilah. "They say art history will be 3, maybe four years. I think I can get it done in three, but I might just come back early, or take a year to explore." She said quietly. "I want to see Italy. And France."
Walking closer to him, she felt a bit chilly. Then again, she had on a skirt, and heels, and he had on man clothes.
She mulled over his question, not having thought that far ahead. "I would like to hope so. If you and your mom will have me. You should try to find out what your sisters and Mom would like. If I come across it, I can send it back home for them. And you, too." She didn't want to talk about leaving. She didn't want to, either, but currently, there were very few things keeping her tethered to Gotham. The man walking with her, for one.

Harvey smiled a bit and kept walking. Eventually they got to his car. He had recently purchased a nice little black Impala, just something to get around on and not put any unneeded stress on the Fairlaner. Once they got to it he opened the door for her and shut it after she was in. He got in and started the engine.
"Well, my place looks a little different, mostly more vinyl, you know me."
And soon they were off. The city lights twinkling as they passed down on the street below. Harvey leaned back in his seat. He always drove with one hand, two hands if shit was getting real. As they passed through the city he would look out the window here and there at things and people.
Finally they got to his building, he pulled into the garage and into his personal garage along the wall. The door opened and he pulled in next to his fairlaner and put in in park and shut down the engine. He got out and whipped around to let her out on her side.
Once they got up to his apartment he opened it and did the usual, took her coat, hung it, and then took off his.
"You wanna watch a movie, listen to a record, pass out?"

"You and your damn cars," she laughs. "Different? Where else can you put more records? You'd have to knock out a wall-" her eyes go wide. "You didn't knock out a wall, did you? And thanks." She pulls on the seatbelt, and shakes her head at him.
"This one has seatbelts, at least." So she can't scoot to the middle and sit next to him, but whatever. They're both quiet as they watch the city. She drinks it in, the night sights, the smells. The noises. Gotham is an unruly mistress, harsh, firm, and mostly nasty, but there are moments when she is nothing but sweet, sweet clarity and perfection.
It was their normal song and dance when they got in, and she stood there, just eyeballing his new addition. "I'm taking off my shoes and looking at your new stuff, first. But either a, or b, and c is inevitable. Maybe I can get a water?" She stands in front of the once wall, now packed from floor to ceiling with vinyl.
There were worse obsessions to have in the world than for a love of a good, clear sound in music. That reminds her to leave him something tucked in between the records. But that's for later. She'll have to bum a smoke from him soon.
