"So you know how to drive?" he asked casually.
He preferred to hold the pump handle than to just let it pump with the little switch kicked to keep it pumping. He just liked to squeeze things.
The owner of the store and few souls sitting up there having a coffee had their eyes fixated on the car. It was one of those cars that caught eyes. It certainly got Harvey many come hither looks from ladies, that was always fun.

Stuffing her hands in her pockets, she didn't know how to answer that. Technically, she did. Legally, no. She'd never had the chance to take the test, or really have time behind the wheel. But she'd learned how to drive, if that was any consolation.
"Not exactly. And I wouldn't want to mess up yours. I got coffee energy drinks. And chocolate, and gum, and candy. And you can stay at my place, if you're too tired to drive back."
It was all a run on sentence, but she didn't want him to get tired, and hurt. Or ruin the car. Perhaps the looked the odd couple, but he was spry enough, and her in his coat looked...enough for them to be something. "Joe inside said you have a nice car. Classic, even." She left out that he said to 'tell her boyfriend.'

Harvey noted the run on sentence.
"I think I'll be ok to make it home, but thanks, I appreciate it."
He sat there silently for a minute. When the pump finally clicked to signal the tank was full he put the pump back and gave a wave to the people inside. A few waved back and he opened her door for her again. Once he was back in the car he started it up again.
"A lot of people like this car. It is awful good lookin' though. Can't imagine why they wouldn't want to have a gander up 'er hood."
Harvey realized he sounded a little crass.
"Heh, sorry. I got a tendency to be a little bit of a dog sometimes."

As she waited for him to finish, she smiled and gave a wave too, when he was done. He must've paid with a card, because he didn't bother to go in. Didn't he realize it was going to be another three some hours before he got home? Was he stupid? Shaking her head she slipped back into her seat, making sure the goodies she's purchased, yes...purchased didn't go everywhere. She hadn't even asked if they could eat in there.
Oops.
Nodding as he explained about the car, she understood him quite well. She didn't get what was crass about it, though. "I don't see what was crass about looking at the engine of a car?" She asked, shrugging. Perhaps it was her upbringing with her parents. Or even the fact she was at an all-girls school, but she wasn't getting what he was saying.

"When you figure out the crass part of that joke, I hope it gives you a laugh."
Harvey continued on the road. He was always a good driver. He'd been really getting good at pursuit driving lately, but evasive driving he was still trying to get the hang of. He laid his arm straight across the back of the seat again, it seemed to be his favorite way to relax in his seat. He would glance to her every so often.
"Man, it must have taken some planning to get out to Gotham from this school of yours. This ain't a short distance, girl."

Oddly, she felt like she was still missing part of the joke. Furrowing her brow she sighed slightly, still not thinking cars were dirty at all, unless he meant literally. "I still don't get it..." she murmured, shifting to sit at his side, cocooned in his too-large jacket as his arm goes up against the backrest again.
As he brings up just howshe got to Gotham, she looks up at him, and shrugs. It was sort of a pain in the ass, then again, she wasn't afraid of hitchhiking. Money, she was learning, got you quite a bit of places.
"People are nice." Is all she offers, thinking of how nice it will be when she can have a car of her own. "That is why I said you could stay. It's going to be a gross ride back, you know." Part of her is so reluctant to have him return to Gotham, she is reaching for excuses to keep him there.

Harvey just smirked and shook his head, letting it go. He wasn't going to keep pressing the joke at her. She'd understand it at some point.
He eyed at her over her insistence on him staying with her. She was right though, he'd need rest before trying to head back. As they continued down the highway he spotted a little mom and pop style motel. He pulled into it.
"I'm sure your headmistress wouldn't appreciate a male shacking up overnight with you. Let's both just stay here for the night and continue in the morning."
Harvey got out to get a room. He asked for a double, however none were available. Soon they were pulling up in front of a room. He got out to let her out again and locked the car doors before getting the room key out.
"You can have the bed, I'm sure I can settle on a chair or something."
The room was simple. Bed, television, and a pair of chairs at a table. The bathroom was at the far end of the room. Harvey wasn't impressed, but he wasn't disappointed either. The place looked well maintained and he didn't spot anything gross.

"That headmistress is my aunt, and she's a bitch." She spat out, eyeing up at him. Shrugging, she knew that her dissapearance would resort in her being punished for something or other, and she'd get around it. That was how this little dance went until she was fully able to get...everythinig she needed. And graduate. At his words, she turned from him, a grin creeping on her face. It wasn't exactly 'shacking up' as he put it, but he was a good looking guy. And a police officer, too!
Finally turning back to him, she nodded, not sayiing a word. Biting her lip as she waited for him to get the room, she popped open the glove box, and slipped some of the money she had 'found' en route from her boarding school, to Gotham. She didn't need it, and he'd argue he didn't, either. But she could at least cover the cost of gas, if not a bit for his time. She did have a heart of gold, sometimes.
She had been about to pop the door open herself, when he scooted out, and opened it for her. She felt..taken care of. Cherished, almost. Thanking him quietly, she waited until he re-locked the car, then opened their, yes, their motel room.
"I can't do that. You have driven me all this way. I just.." She stopped abruptly, shaking her head. That wasn't fair to him. And he was like, a foot taller than her. There was no way he could even fit into one of those. "I just need a pillow, I'll be fine." His jacket was already warm, and she had dressed decently. Moving to one of the chairs, she started finger-combing through her hair, which was well past her shoulders, before starting to braid it quickly. He had braided his sister's hair with ease, she remembered as her fingers worked through her tresses. As she refused to move from her seat, she was careful to see if he removed his wallet. She had something to deposit in it, instead of take out of it, for once. In her little shoulderbag-cum-purse she had a small pad of paper. She wanted to scribble a note on it for his mother, too. He hadn't needed to bring her home, or hell, even offer her a ride. But he'd opened his family to her, when she had nothing, and she would try to repay him until the day she die, for those kindnesses.

He shrugged.
"You sure, you should sleep there."
Harvey could tell arguing with her would be a moot point, she seemed pretty determined. He sat on the bed, his back to her. He put his hands on his face for a moment, rubbing his eyes and face. Finally he began to unbutton his uniform shirt, pulling it off. Under it he wore a white short-sleeved under shirtthat fit snug to his torso. He stood up again and removed his belt with all of its tools, gun, cuffs, pepper spray, night stick, everything. Taking that off seemed to relax him. He sat on the bed again, his back against the headboard.
He picked up the remote and turned the television on.
"Well you don't have to stay over there, I can share a bed. C'mon."
He patted to the left of him, beckoning her to come sit with him as he flipped through channels.

Her fingers worked nimbly to weave her long hair into one moderately intricate braid. If she could do knots, she could do braids. And that was a truth. Swallowing, she watched as he got ready. Wrinkling her nose at his uniform, she blinked a few times as he removed his duty belt. For awhile, she'd forgotten he was a cop. Blinking the sleep from her eyes, she stood, leaving her bag on her chair, and walked near-soundlessly to the bathroom. Shutting the door quietly, she noticed there was a small, thankfully locked window near the ceiling. Doing her business she washed her hands, and face, before warming up a second washcloth, and getting the second towel.
Walking to where he was now sitting on the bed, flipping through the tv. "Here." She said, offering him both. It may be a bit odd, but her mother had done it for her father, when he returned home, and it had always made him smile.
Once he was finished, she'd take the two back to the bathroom, and hang them.
Making sure her shoes were still lined up and fine, she eyed the bed again, not because she didn't trust him, but because no cop from Gotham could be thisnice. Finally, she grabbed her bag, and scooted onto the bed, sitting next to him as he scanned the channels. He still had his wallet, which irritated her. Considering her little trip to Gotham hadn't been a complete bust, the least she could do was repay him.

Harvey was a little surprised by her offering him the washcloth and towel. He shrugged and wiped his face with it. It was refreshing. It allowed him to feel like a human again for the moment. The gesture itself was cherished by Harvey now, not many people showed him such kindness by doing as simple as offering him a washcloth and towel. After he wiped his face he patted off the moisture with the towel and handed them back to her, locking eyes with her as he did.
Once she took the spot beside him he didn't notice the eyeing she gave to the bed. He sighed after a moment and turned his head to her, handing her the remote.
"You pick something, I can never pick and just stop."
Harvey leaned back a little more, feeling relaxed. After a second he seemed to be annoyed by something. He leaned over a little to pull his wallet from his back pocket. He set it on the nightstand beside him. He kicked his shoes off and nearly went all the way to his back. His fatigue was beginning to get the better of him. He looked up to her.
"You're a sweet girl, you know that? You're tough, but you're sweet. Good to know you can take care of yourself. I get so drained from seeing so many women and girls that just... they can't muster the strength to get through the day. It's kind of frightening."

Eying him after he washed his face, she had noticed how tired he was. And not just from today, but from the past week, it seemed. She wasn't stupid, but he worked too hard. Taking the remote, she eyed it before handing it back to him. "I...don't really watch TV, I'm sorry." Handling it like it was alien, because it was to her.
As he started to click through, she watched the screen, finally calling out "Stop! That one!" Scrambling to the edge of the bed she looked closer at the TV, then back at Theo. "That actor, really looks like you." Another handful of glances back and forth, and she pointed again. "Seriously. Do you have a brother, or uncle or something? Not that you have a...chainsaw arm, but you're lefthanded, too, right?" She looked for a watch, and saw it on his right wrist.
Narrowing her eyes at him she saw him take out his wallet, and drop his shoes off the end of the bed. She'd heard horror stories from the other girls about guys doing this, but never experienced it. Ick. She never did like feet. As she sat back, he started talking to her. Nonsense, it seemed. She'd spent enough time on the street to understand that jargon.
"You need to get up, because you're laying on the blankets," She started, pointing. If he wasn't going to budge, she'd just have to wrap him in the comforter or something.
Pursing her lips, she tried to figure out the problem of the near-giant cop falling asleep on top of the blankets. He was her only real hope to get back to the boardingschool without a whole lot of issue. Sighing, she nodded.
"I don't know. My parents...were well off. You don't get treated well when they find out about that on the street, or at school. I get made fun of a lot. I just..have goals." At seventeen, she did. She'd spent several hours over several weeks honing her plan. Two more years, and she'd have enough money to get a ticket to ...somewhere. Overseas. Europe. France, or Italy. Her parents had loved both. Money could get her anything. As her face went serious for a minute, she shrugged. She'd just been lucky to have landed in a goldmine for her goals. Rich girls with nothing to lose, to the point they forgot where they put things.
"I'm going to go to college." She tried to say confidently, but failing.

Harvey sighed, getting off the bed. Once he was up the blankets were moved about. He could care less about blankets. His whole body was just full of fatigue. When he was back on the bed he stayed sitting up for a moment and watched the movie on the screen. He raised a brow.
"I don't see it."
Finally he laid back down and just listened to her again. He tilted his head to her. A lazy smirk splayed across his lips. He probably didn't even realize he was doing it. He put his hands behind his head, causing his elbows to stick out from the sides of his head.
"I guess being a girl is pretty rough. You guys, er girls, seem to get the short end of the stick. I never cared for that."
The college part came across her lips and he quirked a brow, his smile a had a bit more playfulness in it.
"You don't sound so sure about that. What? You don't know about what you want to study or you just telling yourself that so you can have an excuse to get the hell out of here when you got the chance?"
Harvey had thought about going to school, somewhere far away, away from Gotham, but he could never leave his mother and sisters behind, he felt it would be selfish of him.

"You're just tired. That's why you can't see it. He's like an older you. Like an older brother. You can see it in the jaw." She contested, getting off the bed herself and tugging the blanket up over him. He sorta looked like hell, now that she could see him a bit better. Beyond tired.
Moseying back to her side, she took a second to straighten his shoes. She'd already seen where his wallet was, so that was good.
"It depends. You can either fuck to get your way to the top, do it honestly, or...steal, I guess." Slipping her own shoes off, she set them neatly on her side of the bed, and slipped under the blanket, partially sitting.
"I just don't want to be here anymore. My sister is away, my parents are gone. I can't even visit where I grew up without getting handcuffed. I just..if I had what you had, it would be different. Your mom, and sisters...that is a home. It really, really is." She said wistfully. She had nothing keeping her here, sadly.
If she knew he didn't love his car so much, and she drove better, she'd have already high-tailed it out of the little motel, off for somewhere better. But finishing highschool, and maybe college could get her somewhere better. She could only hope.

"I don't think that's a fair assessment. Some of the most bad ass ladies I ever met got to where they were through hard work. Don't be so discouraged."
He turned his head and reached to the light on his side, turning it out.
"Sorry, that lamp was right in my eyes."
He turned his attention back to her.
"Yeah, that's rough, but if you bust out again, you know where to go now. My Ma could never turn away a stray, always loved cats."
Harvey chuckled a bit and let his hand come down. It went to hers and he pulled it off before it got awkward.
"Sorry," he mumbled.
He looked back to the television, his head propped up by the pillow.
"Hmm, yeah, I guess the jaw looks a little similar. What is this one? Oh that's right, Evil Dead. Loved this when I was a teenager."
Totally did not just touch her hand. It didn't happen, it didn't happen, I'm not a creep. I'm not a creep.
