She could feel the tension course through his body as he spoke. Not only was he passionate and understanding about the issue, but he was mad. Sitting up slightly, she let him rant and rave about it for a while, listening.
It made total sense, even. So she understood his anger. But if it weren't for the officers like him, there wouldn't be the small things for her that, she felt, would change the course of one's life. Hell, if it were not for him, maybe she'd have ended up some hooker in the really, really bad parts of East End. Then what?
But still, his anger was palatable in the air. She could almost taste it, and it caused her to be on alert. Instead she watched the profile of his face, each muscle that constricted, or how his eyes narrowed with each emotion.
"But you were raised by more than a good woman, so I know you may not like what happens, but you're not going to go down that route. And you know that, too. Otherwise you wouldn't be so mad right now." She added quietly, the back of her hand gently touching his cheek, before her hand turned, and cupped it. "As long as good men like you are in Gotham, the darkness can't overtake it."
And it was true. She'd seen the same at her school, with the spoiled girls. Now what she was doing to try and fight that system may not be right, but it was going to get her out of there. And hopefully sooner rather than later.
Reaching out, quietly, she let her other hand press at his knuckles, each one in turn on the wheel. "If you grip any harder on that, you're going to break it." She teased him gently.

Harvey seemed to wake from his anger when she touched him. He listened to her. He knew she was right and she meant every word of it. His expression remained rather upset for the moment, she did manage to smooth that stone back to a firm clay.
"Thanks."
He couldn't think of much else to say to that. This was probably one of the longest conversations he'd had with someone outside his family. When she touched his knuckles he sucked in a breath. He'd been with at least one girl before, but this was the first time one had to make him remember to breath. He got his breathing to be a thing again before he turned his head toward her for a moment before putting them back on the road. He relaxed his grip on the wheel.
"I actually did break it once before. Thanks."
Girls. Are. Magical. No ands, ifs, or buts about it. I couldn't quell anyone's rage with simple touch... Could I?

"No problem." She'd seen the emotion seep from him, and was thankful. She wasn't gifted with anything special in particular, but she did like cats. And Theo wasn't a cat, but still. Men were kinda like animals at times. That she knew at least.
"Well, it looks good as new. And we can't have you being broken, and keeping back the darkness. But don't bottle it up, either. That's just as bad." She sighed. Words couldn't portray the fact she needed him to keep being honest, and gentle, and not an asshole to help keep the light bright in Gotham. But a final squeeze on his hand before she let go could.
"Just do what you do, I think that would work." Seemed to suffice for the time being as his chest started to rise and fall, and the air around them thinned. Readjusting, she found that spot again to rest her head. His jacket was almost comically large on her slight frame, but it was keeping her warm. She hadn't thought ahead much when she'd wanted to go home. Maybe next time she would think a bit more.

Harvey took his right hand off the wheel and put his arm flat along the front seat. He would glance down at her now and then, choosing, once again, to be silent for a little while while smoking his cigarette again, ashing it out the window when necessary. He was not phased by her snatching it for a drag here and there.
Eventually, when he tossed the butt of the cigarette out the window for doo, he broke the silence again.
"So, you like any movies or anything like that? Any hobbies, aside from breaking and entering?"
He kept his left arm straight, guiding the wheel as needed.

The silence was nice after a while. Now and again she'd sneak a puff or two off the cancer stick, and he didn't seem to mind. For someone who adhered to upholding the law, he certainly didn't seem so rigid about it. Afterall, she was seventeen, even if her weary eyes said she'd been through enough to age her beyond that. Numbers were truly just numbers.
She had been about to say it was illegal to litter when he probed her with another question instead.
Wait. What did she like? Hobbies? Blinking, she had to think for a moment. She'd been so consumed with anger, and other intense emotions as of late, it really had clouded her vision.
"I like..most movies. I dance, but not as much as I used to. I do gymnastics, run, things like that. I like to read. I want to get a motorcycle. Um...school is fun?" She felt bland, compared to him. "What about you? You can sing?"
Glancing up, she felt horribly childlike. Did she respond wrong? Right?

Harvey sighed.
"Yeah, but I don't do it anymore. I'm a baritone. I liked it but at the same time I didn't. Wanted something more than that, I guess. But yeah, I'm a bit of a movie buff. I got a lot of 'em at home. I have a lot of records, too. That's really about it."
He wasn't much of a drinker. He had a whiskey here and there, or maybe some wine with his Ma, but that was really it. He hadn't become terribly interested in the bottle, yet.
"I like cars, too, I guess. This one was my mom's. I figure one of these days I'll get a caddy or somethin' of my own and let one of my sisters have this one. It ain't fair that I get it too long."

The whole conversation had taken a turn for the depressing. Biting the inside of her cheek, she chanced a glance up at the police officer beside her. "You know you're too young to be so morose. And those are good hobbies, you know. Don't you have a pet? I ...kinda have one at school. Technically we can't have pets, but there is this black cat that is on the grounds. I climb the trees he does, and I've watched him. Sometimes I can sneak food for him, too. I do prefer them over dogs." She was rambling, but she was also quite fond of the black tom-cat at school. He was one of the few bright spots at the prison she was returning too. "But can your sisters drive, even? You're not that old. Seriously." Not that she could drive, either, or really had a reason to, but in theory she knew how. And that was something, right?
"You can't just get all down about your work. What about the good you're doing, too? Like me?" She aspired hopefully, looking up at him and elbowing him a bit in the ribs, only to hit muscle there.

Harvey shrugged a bit and glanced at her.
"No pets. I am too busy to take care of one."
Harvey chuckled a bit and seemed to relax more in his seat at the mention of his sisters driving. He shook his head with a smile.
"No, not yet, they're too young. I'm going to teach them when they get old enough."
Harvey almost feared that day. He could only imagine the amount of stress and tension it would put on him. He was pretty patient with his sisters, but he couldn't see his patience being very good inside of a moving vehicle with one of them behind the wheel. He'd likely be stomping on those imaginary passenger side breaks.
"I try not to, but there are so many guys I work with and for that are pieces of trash. Its can get pretty maddening."
The amount of corruption within the department was a little overwhelming for Harvey at times, but he had to just deal with it and do his best to swim through the muck.

"Then why not hold on to the car, and make sure it works. Then deal with teaching your sisters to drive. No point in worrying about it on top of everything else, too." Shrugging a bit, she scooted around where she was, sighing. It seemed like every mile was bringing her closer to her demise.
Nodding, she tried to understand his trashy coworkers. But the closest she could think of was her snotty, bitchy classmates she was soon to be rid of.
"Maybe things will get better for both of us, someday." She offered, not fully believing her words.

Harvey just shrugged at her first suggestion about the car. She was right, he put too much on his mind. There was just something about him and his brain where he insisted upon it. He'd been so focused on his family for so long he kind of forgot how to focus on himself a lot. He had a feeling he'd be like that for much of his life. Though, in his future, his family would not need him so much any more, and his semblance of a family of his own would be the people he would come to work with one day. Harvey, you have so much ahead of you...
"I'd like to think that. I think that is something we can both bet on, eh?"
Harvey didn't even think about it, but he curled his arm around her shoulder and gave her an encouraging little squeeze. He stayed like that, even after he realized how awkward it suddenly was.
Just don't worry about it, idiot.
And Harvey listened to himself and his new friend.
He let it be what it was.

There it was again; the little comforts he just did, without thinking, without contemplating consequence. That made her feel how she should. Like she was ok, even if she wasn't. That she could go on, even if she was in doubt for the moment.
"I'll make a bet on it. But what is the wager?" She sure was talking big, without knowing all the terms. Hell, was she going to see Mrs. Bullock and the rest of them again? Part of her hoped yes, but this was just some cop, who had been nice to her. She'd had a lucky break is all. But that little gesture restores something. Fussing with her hands in too long sleeves, she just nodded, and laid her head on his shoulder.

Harvey thought about that and glanced down at her again.
"The coat."
He had to stifle a yawn a moment later. It was getting late, but he'd be fine. He was used to being up hours from now. Since he had the next couple of days off he might just stop off and stay somewhere new instead of heading home to Gotham.
Sometimes he needed to be away from his troubles to get a grasp on dealing with them. A cleansing of the mind body and soul.

"The coat?" She was confused. Which wasn't exactly a new thing for the seventeen year old, but still. As she held up her arms in the too long sleeves, she had no idea what he was talking about. Yeah, she was wearing it, but what?
As he yawned, she bit her lip. She hoped he wasn't going to fall asleep at the wheel. They were still another 90 minutes from her school. Either they could stop here, or he could stay with her in her room. It's not like the other girls didn't do it all the time. And he was a cop! Who were they going to call if she was busted? The cops? And if she really had a say, she didn't want him to go.

"You can keep the coat."
It may have been too big but it looked right on her. It fit even if it didn't actually fit.
Harvey had to pull over and get gas. He stopped at the service station, his uniform a little unkempt from the ride. He stood outside pumping the gas, naturally keepy his eye keen to all and anything around him.

That wasn't a bet, and she knew it. Pursing her lips, she exiting the car, yelling she was going to the bathroom. And get them a few things. Chocolate, of course, and two of those coffee-energy drinks. One was mocha, and the other vanilla. You can't go wrong with either of those, right? She also grabbed a pack of gum, and some of those spree candies. Bag in hand, she walked back to the car, putting the things inside before lingering beside him at the pump.
