What he had the time to see on the files originally wasn’t very much. He was in quite a hurry, being that they just escaped and he had taken a large detour from Edward’s original plan. Unannounced he had taken a turn and headed for Arkham’s office, looking for particular files. Although it was exactly as he had planned it to go Edward was rushing him through most of it. Regardless he managed to get out with the files he needed, catching a glimpse of something interesting as he did. Later he was able to analyze a bit more thoroughly.
Dr. Crane hadn’t touched his coffee, and in fact he didn’t plan to. It was just a formality, something to get the waitress to go away. He had done that just fine a moment ago, it was doubtful she would ever be back to this table until they were gone.
Dr. Crane knew that his sanity was always up for discussion, with more than just the doctors at Arkham or the GCPD. Many Professional Criminals had accused him of losing his mind, along with several vigilantes. It was something he was quite use to, though he knew he was sane. None of them ever seemed to be sure, or at least able to agree. The Asylum deemed him Insane simply because a doctor couldn’t sit with him long enough to make a decent diagnosis. Or at least that’s how he saw it. None of them knew what sanity was, or what reality was for that matter. All they could see was what they had created for themselves to protect them.
Dr. Stenet was no exception.
Gaining little reaction from her didn’t bother him, how could she understand what was going on? It would make it all the sweeter when she was so involved she couldn’t escape it. When she asked what he had found out his thoughts turned darker. Dr. Crane’s eyes flooded with malicious intent, an unstable look like he knew or understood far more than he should, and planned to act upon it. His body language remained still and silent, as he kept flipping the object in his pocket slowly. He found out far too much to ever explain to her…
“I found out all I needed to know…” Dr. Crane cryptically replied. Dr. Stenet may know what he was referring to, she may not. It didn’t matter to him. What did matter is how she would react to the action in the future. She was an important part of his plan, he needed to know…and he would find out. This concept he was going to disprove he was going to show them and everyone. “If everything goes as you would like it to then you have nothing to fear Dr. Stenet…all you need to know….is when…” He stopped turning the object in his pocket and glanced at both of them.

When the woman doesn't react as much as Heather had hoped, she finds her mood starting to sink again. Does nothing bother this Dr. Stenet? She finds herself contemplating the possibility of pestering Jon into doing something else after this meeting before they head back to the hideout if he's not already planning on it - at this rate she won't meet her recommended quota of entertainment for the day otherwise.
In the meantime, her attention continues to linger on her sandwich. It's actually quite good, even if it is a bit elaborate for her tastes. Though she does keep an eye on Dr. Stenet just in case the woman actually makes any sort of sign that Jon's actually getting to her. But the woman doesn't seem to be even a little bit twitchy, like most people do when their facade is about to fail. Of course, she knows she's only so good at reading people - she's better at voices. However, annoyingly enough, Dr. Stenet's seems just about as calm as the rest of her. She frowns at her sandwich, trying very hard to be patient. Surely Jon's going find some way to make make it more interesting. He's uncommonly good at that, after all.

The thing about vagueness, is that you can take it different ways. If Nina were more inclined to be fearful, that combined with the unstable look in the man's eyes might cause her to question whether or not she's really so sure that he hasn't come across something harmful to her. But she simply isn't - she's inclined to be calm. Genuinely calm, as faking calmness wasn't sufficient for her. No, she spent years teaching herself to school her emotions into a stable state where she can think logically instead of reactively when it's important for her to do so. Not that she doesn't still have to deal with them, but it's on her timetable and in her own way.
And it would be so easy for her to overreact in this situation, but she doesn't. Her logic is telling her that while it's remotely possible the man knows something important, it's also telling her that it's much more likely that he merely found something that he thinks is important or that he has nothing at all and is simply toying with her. And either way, her logic is telling her that's simply not anything worth getting upset over on its own.
Of course, it's also telling her that the way the man's dragging this out is annoying. The salad helps. Or more specifically, stabbing things with a fork helps. "When what?" is all she asks this time, taking another bite of food. It's actually quite delicious, but she hasn't really bothered to notice that.

Dr. Crane didn’t expect Miss Stenet to be hyperactive or excited about the meeting, but he did picture her a bit different from how she was acting. From his time with Edward he at first could only imagine the kind of woman that would catch his interest. This was actually quite confusing to him. What did he see in this woman?...It didn’t matter, it would all be clear eventually.
The thought of keeping any woman close like that was enough to make him uncomfortable. As he had said to many in his career field, now and previous, they were a weakness and a waste of time. Getting attached to anyone personally was nothing but a weakness, something that could be used against you easily. In this career field everyone would leap upon the opportunity to take it all from you. Why anyone would admit themselves to such a trap was beyond his understanding.
His gaze went to VerMillion for a moment as he thought. Just her sitting next to him was quite the contradiction to what he was thinking and what he had said in the past. Those that looked at him would judge them as what they thought they were. It would only prove how much they really didn’t understand however. Dr. Crane planned to keep the same outward demeanor toward relationships even while VerMillion was with him. It really wasn’t his fault they couldn’t grasp the bigger picture. Dr. Stenet on the other hand didn’t seem to care that VerMillion was next to him much at all.
But they weren’t here to talk about VerMillion or Edward. They were here to talk about what was going to happen to Miss Stenet next, whether she knew it or not by the end of this. Turning his gaze back to her he took in her calm rather annoyed attitude toward him. “You’ll know right when you need to know.” Dr. Crane replied genuinely. If he told her when it was going to happen it would defeat the purpose. “I can assure you that I have the highest expectations for your ‘performance’ however.”

Heather's attention starts to wander. She's actually starting to wonder if she wouldn't have preferred to have stayed at the lab. Then again, when she sees Jon looking over at her she smiles at him and changes her mind back. If she hadn't come then she might have missed seeing Jon in a suit and this is still totally worth that. The fact that she's on brave toxin makes that even better - if she wasn't she'd still enjoy seeing him dressed up but with all sorts of annoying thoughts about whether or not she should feel this or that feeling. Life these days is about a million times more certain when she's on the drug, even if it's also a lot more confusing. And boring.
But as she cuts off another bite of sandwich, she's reminding herself that she's actually enjoying most of this situation. It's Dr. Stenet who is making it so miserable. She's half tempted to kick her in the shin underneath the table, just because, but even she isn't that childish... and she doesn't think that her legs would reach... Of course, the short woman isn't helping either, just sitting there watching the conversation with such a peculiar intensity. Weird, that.

If Crane had wanted Nina to be interesting, he chose entirely the wrong time to talk to her. Then again, it's hard to say exactly when would have been better; after Edward so carelessly dismissed her from his life she's felt rather... drained.
But even if Crane had met her before that happened, it isn't like she'd interact with him anything like the ways she would with Edward, even setting aside the more emotional ones. While she strongly disagrees with what both men do, she's far more disgusted by what Crane does than what Edward does - they both kill people but while Edward's methods are actually interesting in a way, Crane's are a perversion of what she's most passionate about. This makes Edward actually interesting to talk to, while she'd have preferred spending the rest of her life never having met Crane in the first place. So most of the reasons why Edward loved her are certainly not going to show themselves in this conversation.
Even so, it would be wrong to say that she doesn't care about Miss Glass's presence. It's more that she's simply decided to do nothing about it. She's not a rogue to immediately latch onto the idea that the young woman may represent some sort of weakness that she could exploit - she's not the type of person who would do such a thing, at least not unless it was somehow tied to an immediate need to defend herself. Actually, her feelings are more in keeping with out a vigilante might react; if anything, she'd want to get Miss Glass out of the situation. But she has other, higher priorities that could easily be compromised if she tried that, so she'll regretfully do nothing.
As Crane once again answers her question by not answering her question once again, there's a sudden pause. Something about what he said causes a flash of realization to cross her features for an instant, and her mood shifts. She looks up from her salad to look Crane squarely in the eye, a sudden spark of anger now visible in hers. It's a confident anger though, defiant. But all she says is, "And I don't suppose you'd listen if said that you should leave me alone?" Next to her, Shawty shifts in her seat as if suddenly uncomfortable.

There were many definitions for the word love depending upon the context it was being used in. Many people thought it meant various different things; the doctors and professors he worked along with all had their own opinion on it. Unfortunately they were all wrong, blinded by the fact was what it really was, a secondary emotion. Some associated love more with a passionate affection for another person, others would associate it more with a sexually passionate desire.
However many ways it could be explained, it was far too over used for what many tried to explain it to be. It was something that he told himself didn’t exist, and deep within he believed it, and wanted to believe it. Love was something made up by man to explain a reaction of fear in a way that helped them cover their shame in it, instead of embracing fear as they should.
The closest explanation for what society tried to call love he could only relate to with the extreme sense of satisfaction he felt when someone gave him what he desired. When his research was furthered, when that sweet scream left their lips and their faces were in utter terror, he could only explain it as the perfect personification of fear. It was amazing to behold and to fully understand. The fake image of love that society tried to put forth about feelings between one another…well he had never felt that, as far as he would admit.
That was why he was here today sitting at this table, as odd as it sounded. He had a purpose for it and he came to have the cogs begin to turn for the grand plan he was attempting to fulfill. If successful he would only prove himself to be right in his theories, and there was no way he could be wrong. This was not only for him, but for everyone to witness as he proclaims it to be what it actually was. That would be for another time however, today was about getting it started with Miss Stenet.
Of course from the outside many suspected his feelings for VerMillion, he paid them no mind. It was clear to him what it must have looked like. Some might have thought that they were more than just running around with each other. Perhaps some thought that they were intimate together or that they had something even deeper from the surface involved. Only they knew for sure. For now Dr. Crane wanted to see it this way. There would be little he could do now to convince anyone otherwise, and he rarely cared for the general populace’s opinion. Only a short few did he leave out of the equation completely.
Dr. Crane followed Nina’s expression very carefully, taking in the slight discomfort she had with his previous statement. He could have laughed at the statement but he kept his poise instead. There was nothing that she could do, not after this. She would be helpless, and that’s how she should feel as she submits to fear. “I assure you I am listening Dr. Stenet…I just don’t really care for your opinion on what I should do.” He said with a small smile offered. It was meant with no disrespect, it just hardly mattered what she did from this point. Moving his hand finally from his pocket he lifted an even smaller black square onto the table and spun it around in his hands. Placing it near the back box on the table the two collided with each other without his aid making an audible snap. The water in the glass suddenly began changing direction with its ripples moving in odd disoriented directions.

The instant that Dr. Stenet's expression changes, Heather looks up at the woman and smirks. Oh, so Jon finally managed to touch a nerve, huh? And here she was beginning to think that the woman was too dull for it to happen! She really should have more faith in his ability to get under people's skin. What was it about what he said that ticked off Dr. Stenet so much though? But though she'd been trying to follow their conversation, her mind has been elsewhere enough that she can't pinpoint what Jon just said that was any different than what he's already been saying. She makes a mental note to ask him later - she's got to figure that he's got a better grasp on what's going on in the woman's head than she does.
What Dr. Stenet says causes her smirk to get even bigger, and she doesn't suppress a short note of humor at it. That almost sounded like a threat, coming from a woman who looks no more accustomed to fighting than she is. Yeah, like that needs to be taken seriously. She would have remarked on that, but just as she's trying to decide if she should, Jon pulls out something else and her attention is drawn to what he's doing with it. "What is that?" she asks when she sees how it changes the ripples, "A magnet?" She may have avoided learning about science as much as she could, but she's not completely oblivious to it and knows that's a possibility.

One feeling fairly foreign to Nina is feeling of helplessness. She doesn't 'do' that. If something stands between her and something she wants or needs, there's always a way to get it. No exceptions. Sometimes that means she'd have to give up something else, and sometimes the price is too high, but that's a matter of priorities and not powerlessness. As one who tends to be very aware of her options and ability to choose from them, mentally backing her into that corner is a lot easier said than done.
"No you're not," she replies flatly, ignoring the apparent amusement of both him and Miss Glass. And her tone indicates that she's quite serious, yet there's a certain sadness that seems to indicate that she's merely saying this because she believes it to be true and not because she thinks that she has any hope of actually convincing him with these words, "I did not give an opinion, but you're regarding it as such, and therefore you'll not really listen." Her expression remains intent, and though she gives what he's doing to the taser a glance, she's simply not interested in it.
In fact she's suddenly grown rather weary of this entire conversation; she now has what she came here for, and seeing as this meeting has hardly been pleasant she'd like to see it end sooner rather than later.

For the moment VerMillion’s immediate interest in the chemical change went ignored. What it represented would be made clear to her eventually, and right now he wasn’t focused on answering any questions about it. She could come to her own conclusion without his input. The fact that she did take an interest in Dr. Stenet’s dislike toward the whole situation itself pleased him however, it was just going to make this all easier by the end.
Dr. Crane now seemed indifferent to the situation he had placed before her, his demonstration completed, his point was across. There was little reason left to be interested in what she had to say. Especially in this setting, the next time they meet he will be very interested in her opinion, but the truth behind it will be far more amplified. Right now, opinion’s was all he was hearing.
She didn’t threaten him, how could she? He feared nothing. Even when he was a part of societies working world he rarely took the opinion of others seriously. Only a choice few did he leave out of the equation. Dr. Crane tapped his fingers lightly on the cloth table as he thought about it. Some individuals he had met at least showed enough intelligence to be heard out, not necessarily taken into consideration. There were a few people that he did listen to genuinely. After all, if he didn’t listen at all he wouldn’t have had the Scarebeast.
That glint in his eyes, the spark of the moment that caused the idea. What seemed like so long ago. It only took just a thought, a small idea that grew into something so much more; he felt he almost owed him for it. Of course he would never tell him, therefore he would never know. The events that happened afterward slowly crept into his mind. The feeling of being suspended in chains, the dark glooming room, paired with the deafening noise of….
Life came back into Dr. Crane’s eyes after his mind shot from the incident, he owed him nothing, and they were even. His eyes darted about for a moment realizing now that he had become unfocused from the subject at hand. It wasn't too uncommon for him to slip into a deep state of thought. It was perfectly normal in his eyes; he just understood the world so much better than others. Slipping into a deeper state of mind was just a sign of his higher realization.
The cold stare of Dr. Crane came back and met Nina’s rather indifferent disposition in her eyes. “Not complying with that you want is another matter entirely Dr. Stenet” He replied as if the conversation had not been delayed at all by the short lapse of his thoughts. His eyes left her momentarily to meet Shawty’s and then VerMillions to his side. “Unless you have anything of value to contribute to the conversation further…We’re done here.” The doctor remarked as politely as he was capable of, which wasn’t very much. He had come to do what needed to be done; now he had other parts of his plan that needed to fall into the right places. With a small gesture of his hand they were ready to leave. No intention of paying, not that he would have whether they were here or not. The truth was he simply didn’t have the money to give them let alone the desire to pay them for inadequate service.

Heather gives Dr. Stenet's words a large roll of her eyes. More empty words. Who does this woman think that she is saying such a thing to someone like Jon? If there's anything she's learned by being around the man so much is that he gets a bit... obsessed when he wants a thing. Doesn't give up until he has it no matter how many obstacles get thrown in his way - he simply adapts his method to the situation as it changes. And now he wants something from Dr. Stenet, and the stupid woman seems to think that she's in a position to warn him away from her? Yeah, right.
But she frowns when Jon fails to answer her question, at least until she sees his expression go distant for a moment. Looks like his mind's wandered off on a tangent again... No matter, she can always pester him about it later. In fact, asking for an explanation the next time he tries to go do something boring would give her the perfect excuse to interrupt him.
She's silent as Jon essentially indicates that the conversation is over. Figures - just when it was getting good. On the other hand, she's almost through with her sandwich, so aside from watching the woman squirm there's only so much enjoyment to be had here. And it's Dr. Stenet's fault - if they were talking to someone like that waitress this entire meeting would have been loads more interesting!

Nina waits silently through the brief pause in the conversation, likewise behaving as if it didn't happen. And what Crane says immediately afterwords causes her to purse her lips as if to silently indicate that she could choose to argue the point further but has decided not to. No point. Yet her eyes look steadily back in spite of the coldness of his own look, as if to prove that she can.
Only then does she respond to his words by simply saying, "Good." And without another word she moves to stand, along with Shawty who immediately takes a protective position behind her boss. She has no reason to stay any longer if he has nothing more to say: she has nothing more to say either, is hardly enjoying the company, and even ate as much of her salad as she cared to. And she has no reason to be polite about her leaving even though she knows quite well how to be - it's unlikely to help her at all.
She doesn't even bother to wait to pay: given that she was essentially Crane's not-completely-willing guest and the water was free, let the price of the salad go to him. Perhaps she'd feel somewhat bad for the restaurant if she knew that he intended to skip the bill himself, but though some might say that's something you'd only expect of a Gotham rogue, the only other one she's familiar with is Edward and he usually has more class than that. And plenty of money to throw around, for that matter.
