Dr. Crane certainly sized his own work up to everyone else’s. His was far more important than theirs. Anyone could be a doctor; anyone could learn how to mend the human body, but learning how to mend the human mind? Now that was a talent. That’s what he was really doing, showing the minds power over the body. Showing his patients and the world what fear really was.
He actually hadn’t meant for the conversation to get to the point in fact, it was nowhere near it. That would come much later, today was just a demonstration, just a small piece of what he had set up. This was all inspired after all, and certainly not by any of the women around him.
The fact that he was surrounded by women was….different. It was unusual for Dr. Crane to be seen with anyone let alone three women. One actually sitting with him as well. At first he hadn’t thought much of it, but it and slowly began to come up to the forefront of his mind. It reminded him of how much he disliked the general populace to begin with, these women in front of him were no exception to the rule. He hardly considered VerMillion the general populace anymore. Regardless of the thought they had a purpose, His plan was slowly changing in his mind to accommodate for Shawty’s presence and what effects it might cause. Dr. Crane always did like to plan ahead, but he prepared for a last moment change..
Watching her take in the object on the table was amusing. He studied her every facial expression, every pull of her skin, nothing was missed. “The man that was kind enough to hand this over to me is still probably wondering around aimlessly, if he is still coherent enough to do so.” He paused and leaned in a bit closer to the table running his fingers over the box. “You see when he shot me with this it looked quite different, I’m not a mechanic or a machinist, but I am well versed in taking anything apart and pouring out the inside.” A sinister smile came over his features as he kept his gaze on Nina. Not paying much attention to either Shawty or VerMillion right now. This was far too important…
The object was a Taser that had been taken apart and just the raw mechanics of it left. The batteries that caused the shock and the trigger were still attached. The form of the gun itself was completely gone, along with the piston that moved the wires forward. All that remained was just the most important parts for what he needed. “Electricity does wonders for the brain, although it’s not used much in psychology today do to the common misconception that it is barbaric or painful to do so, Electricity is actually a very effective method…An…overwhelming amount of people…fear the operation however.” His voice became rather unstable as he got further into his point. His mind was trailing off again as it began to dive into the depths of his obsession. He could talk about fear all day, especially the phobia’s surrounding it, being one of his favorite subjects.
Shaking the thought from his mind he tried to remain focused on the task at hand. Though soaking up any anxiety he may have caused from just talking about the box itself. “But you asked a question didn’t you?” Dr. Crane tilted his head and leaned back more in his seat. “This is a cure…” He held the double meaning in his words for her to decide.

As Jon starts explaining what the box is, Heather listens very carefully. Even though she doesn't quite understand what he's talking about at that point, she frowns at the thought of anyone shooting Jon with anything. Not that she exactly blames them for doing so given who Jon is, but she still doesn't like it. It isn't until he starts talking about electricity though that she realizes that it's a somewhat dismantled Taser.
The frown remains as he talks about the benefit of electricity on brains, though she finds her attention threatening to drift - at least until she hears Jon's voice becoming unstable and the mention of fear. She smirks to herself; yeah, she figured he'd have to slip that in somewhere. But though she looks over at Dr. Stenet, she has a hard time seeing much of a reaction from the woman to the box. Partly because she's just not as good at reading people as Jon is, but mostly because the woman doesn't seem to emote much. A part of her starts to wonder what it would take to change that. She quietly takes another sip of her soda, feeling plenty entertained by all this.

Nina is silent as he explains about the box, but though she's not good with electronics she's most of the way to guessing what it is even as his words confirm it. While using her gift, the easiest electrical thing for her to identify are batteries, and given the size of the battery and the fact that pretty much everything else she can sense in it seems big enough to handle a lot of energy, it ends up not being a hard guess.
Shawty is even quicker to identify it, perhaps because when Dr. Stenet's safety is involved she's extremely prone to assume that any unknown object could be a weapon. Though when the man's words confirm it, she shifts just a little in her seat, perhaps because of the sheer amount of dislike she has for seeing something like that so close to Dr. Stenet.
But Nina herself remains much more calm. In fact, once she knows for sure that the unknown box is a Taser she gets just a little calmer. Mostly because, while she wouldn't put it past him, she suspects that he has a further and better point to this than to simply use the Taser on someone, and the longer this conversation goes without him using it the less likely it seems. And even if he did, those things are supposed to be non-lethal. Assuming that he hasn't modified it by more than stripping it down a lot, anyway. Not that she isn't plenty suspicious of his motives, but she doesn't think that they're quite there yet.
"You don't need to explain the effect of electricity on the brain to me," she comments neutrally, her attention shifting from studying the Taser to looking back at him, "I may not have studied the mind, but the brain is a completely different matter." In fact she thinks it's extremely unlikely that Crane could know anywhere near the amount she does on the subject. He may know a lot about it, but can he directly sense the effect that electricity has on neurons at the microscopic level in real time and without equipment? No. Could he possibly be aware of the complex chemical changes it prompts to nearly the same degree that she does? Of course not. Then again, she tries to keep the full extent of her knowledge on that sort of thing as quiet as possible, lest anyone start asking how she could possibly know all of that so easily, and especially at the same time as having the same depth of knowledge of any other part of a body.
When his last statement trails off, she's quick to ask, "A cure for what?" You'd think that after spending so much time with Edward, she'd be used to people beating around the bush, but she really isn't. He'd only really been that cryptic with her around the time that they first met, and the exceptions to that were actually more on the pleasant side. This only gives her the feeling that she's being messed with, and she hates that feeling. Of course, her tolerance for things that she hates is extremely high so her patience holds, though a slight hint of irritation touches her voice when he prompts her to ask the obvious question for a second time.

Dr. Crane had no intention of using this on Nina or Shawty or anyone for that matter. The device was far too small to have the effect he wanted; this was just a minor example. Of course it still packed the punch that it normally would in a tazer without the ability to reach someone at a distance, he wasn’t just going to jump up and throw it on her. Dr. Crane had no reason to do that….His motives were far more sinister.
VerMillion remained very quiet next to him though he couldn’t help but notice that she seemed interested. Good, because later she was going to be very much involved in all of this. It was important that she was paying attention to what was going on, she may even learn something from it.
Nina had brushed his explanations away and it was merely met with a static expressionless look as he listened to what she thought she understood. Perhaps if she could see the bigger picture she could understand what was going on, not to his surprise, she didn’t understand. How could she? “I’m sure I don’t need to go into detail…The brain is not as different as you may think..” He said with a soft smile coming over his features but quickly being pulled away. It was true he didn’t know as much as Miss Stenet when it came to the microbiology of the brain, but he knew the mind better than anyone in his eyes. He saw the truth of it so clearly it was blinding, and she would soon come to see the light of all of it. Of course Miss Stenet was just another piece to his glorious plan.
“Psychology has always been a daring search field…though the measures of morality in society have changed, ECT has changed right along with it being far less…..abrasive than it was previously. I’m sure since you claim to be so familiar with the effects I don’t need to go into detail.” He paused and grabbed the box with his fingers carefully staying away from the wires. Dr Crane held it up for a moment and inspected it. “It’s amazing what just a small amount of influence can do to change your outlook on anything…Or what it can do to…alter…your ability to have an outlook on anything..” His words were thick with exterior meaning, as they came out slow and calculated.
Carefully he lowered the box again and placed just one wire into her glass making sure to keep everything for the most part away from it. He had modified it a bit having placed small pieces of rubber on the ends of the box, so it wasn’t like sticking a knife into wall socket. Pressing the trigger the water immediately began to bump and wave, and a certain rhythmic motion. His eyes scanned over the water in awe, like he knew something at the table that no one else did. His eyes traced up from it and locked with Miss Stenet’s to capture her inevitable reaction.

The more that Dr. Stenet talks, the less interesting she seems to Heather. She's just taking everything so seriously. Then again, she finds herself wondering if that's yet another one of those cases where people who seem to be behaving oddly are only that way because of the toxin. Hmm.
She, personally, finds the current topic of conversation to be getting more interesting. Enough that she's far more patient about listening to Jon's indirect words than the one he's actually talking to. Something about shocking people's brains just sounds cool.
And so is the effect of the Taser on the water in the glass when he turns it on. She abruptly sets down her drink and leans forward so that her head is close to the table, and she can get a look at it with the glass more at eye level. "Now that's cool," she comments, watching the ripples. She may not be that enthused about the sciences in general, but little demonstrations like that - especially if she doesn't have to do homework on them - are actually interesting enough to get her attention.

Nina finds herself forcing herself to be patient. Partly because of the slowness of his words - she'd really rather get this meeting over with as quickly as possible so that she can leave and actually do something important. It seems to her that he's intentionally trying to drag this out instead. She continues to watch and listen, but she doesn't bother to respond to his words; a part of her hopes that the longer she just lets him talk, the sooner he'll be finished. That's how it always seemed to work with Edward, though what Edward had to say was interesting and the time had a way of just flying by...
She watches as he puts the Taser in the water, but she only gives the ripples a glance. Miss Glass's more enthusiastic reaction to it gets an even longer glance before she looks at Crane and asks, "Is there a point to this?" She's hardly overawed by seeing the effect of electricity on water. It is rather more impressive to look at on the microscopic level than it is even at the surface, given the effect of the current on the molecules, but if she wanted to see that then Crane wouldn't be her first choice to show it to her.

Dr. Crane was normally a very serious person, as he was being now. VerMillion seemingly found him interesting of late. Of course she had in the past when she had done a small report on him. It seemed that she was destined to have some sort of interaction with him at some point. The thought was almost ridiculous to Dr. Crane, but everyone had their part to play in this world, even if most people’s parts to play were significantly less than his.
He noticed that she was fascinated by the simple science that was taking place in the glass. It was good to know that she was captivated easily by simple things. He would keep that in mind for later. Right now there was nothing spectacular about what was happening in the glass. In Dr. Cranes mind though it was a beautiful demonstration that just hadn’t gotten off of its feet yet. He could see so much deeper into it, but it was only because he knew what was going to happen in the near future with it.
Dr. Crane held back a smile as she asked such a question. What a question…Of course there was a point to all of this. One that she would never be able to understand with the mind that she had, she would have to look so much deeper into it. At the same time she would have to step back and look at the bigger picture of it all. This was so personal; it had such a wonderful touch to it…such a brilliant plan.
Making it personal was one of Dr. Crane’s better talents, whether it was intentional or not. “Indeed…” He answered simply bringing his hand near the glass to point toward the ripples in it. “These ripples are a lot like the wave patterns of the brain. This is not manipulating them…this is just them in their natural form, moving through each synapse. This is just a simple representation of what the brain is doing….” Dr. Crane couldn’t help but smile as he watched for any changes in her expression. Maybe she would become bored with this. After all he hadn’t shown them much, but the anxiety over what he was planning, that would have been euphoric to see…
The waitress had come back to give him a warm up on his coffee. She dipped down and crinkled her nose at the weird object on the table. Instead of saying anything about it she ignored it and did he job, reaching for Dr. Crane’s cup. Suddenly his hand lifted from where it was near the glass and flew to the woman’s wrist. His gaze turned from Nina’s up to the waitresses not knowing whether she would recognize him or not. Right now it didn’t matter now that he had set the stage. He locked in with the fear in her eyes as she stared back at him and tried to pull her wrist away. Her eyes averted, and her lip pulled under as he twisted her wrist and let go. The waitress walked off quickly afterward, without a word.

Dr. Stenet's words cause Heather to frown a little. Not only is the woman boring, but a killjoy. Can she not see how cool the rippling water is? Sure, she can admit that it's probably simple thing that's easily explained by someone who actually paid attention in science class, but she likes it. Yet she and Jon seem to be the only ones with any appreciation for it. Then again, he's the one demonstrating it and she's not the type of person who is around science stuff a lot.
She goes silent again as Jon explains about how it's like brain waves. She remembers learning some basic things about them in school, but she's already mostly forgotten it. And they didn't give her a visual. It's much more interesting that way.
When the waitress comes by she doesn't bother to notice the woman until Jon suddenly has the woman's wrist in his hand. And she can't help but smirk when she sees the reaction that Jon gets to his stare - he didn't even hurt her! As the waitress walks off, Heather continues to smile to herself, quietly amused.

Actually, Nina's no more anxious now than she was when she came in: cautious, yes, but still very calm. Most of the changes in her expression speak of slowly growing irritation and impatience due to the pace of the conversation. When he explains about the ripples, she gives him a purposely dull look as she quietly says, "If there's a point, then can we please skip the excessively oversimplified explanations of things I already know and get to it?"
Shawty too has very little interest in the conversation - partly because she's just plain bored by it too, and partly because it's her job to be the one paying careful to everything else. And as a result of that, when Crane suddenly grabs the waitress, she twitches and her eyes lock onto the movement like a cat spotting a mouse. But since the person that he grabbed isn't the one that she's worried about, aside from the sudden shift she does nothing.
Nina isn't nearly as quick to react, but her eyes go wide in sudden alarm, and she watches what Crane does to the poor woman very intently until he lets her go. Her lips purse in open disgust, and though her voice is quiet there's definitely some anger in it as she asks, "Was that really necessary?" She can tolerate being bored to death, albeit with a few complaints, but watching him harass someone definitely crosses some sort of line.
Though after she says that her eyes suddenly shift over to Heather, and her forehead wrinkles a little in concern. Exactly why did the girl think that was amusing?

His attention was still focused on the waitress as she hurried away. There was no telling if she was going to go to the back and not say a word, or she would say something to the staff. Regardless he welcomed any attempt, they were far enough along in this for him to quickly make his point and be on his way. It didn’t look like she outwardly recognized him, which wasn’t surprising. She was just a waitress, doing her job, racing to oblivion.
Once she was out of sight his gaze turned to VerMillion momentarily. He didn’t expect her to understand much of what was going on or what he was talking about. This was all about setting the stage, and get certain individuals attention. She seemed to be enjoying herself at least, which was good considering she was more likely to get in trouble in the lab if she wasn’t entertained.
It had been some time, but it wasn’t like Dr. Crane wasn’t use to taking care of other humans. He thought he did it quite well at Arkham Asylum. The people that didn’t agree with him were just too blind to see the way he saw the world. How could they ever understand? Dr. Stenet was no exception to this. She was acting the same way, rushing everything missing the larger picture of it all. It would go over her head he assumed. She wouldn’t understand until it was far too late.
Dr. Crane could only offer a satisfied smile at Dr. Stenet’s reaction to him grabbing the waitress. “Always Dr. Stenet..” He spoke out softly to her comment on his methods. His gaze went back to the water that was still rippling in the glass. “Since you’re in such a hurry, I suppose I should just tell you that this is all I wanted to show you as a demonstration. The rest is up to you…” Clearly there was a double meaning behind his words, as Dr. Crane always spoke cryptically.
Slipping his hand from the table he placed it back into his pocket. Only one more object was needed to make his statement clear, or unclear...It would depend on really how she took in the world around her. Of course he had the highest expectations for someone that had caught Edward's interest at one point. He shook the thought from his mind and turned the object in his pocket waiting for her response.

The amusement on Heather's face suddenly turns to annoyance at Dr. Stenet's reaction. Yep, definitely a killjoy. "Oh, lighten up," she mutters, though she suspects that her words will be ignored. She straightens back up and leans back in her seat, picking up her soda again for another sip. She's almost of the opinion that the waitress deserved that - they have their drinks, yes, but exactly how long does it take go get a salad and a sandwich?
When Jon speaks again, she listens idly, but he's being all mysterious again. She frowns to herself as she ponders that, but since she hasn't the slightest clue why Jon wants to talk to this woman to begin with she's guessing that she won't be able to figure that one out and therefore doesn't try very hard to do so. Instead she's back to simply observing the conversation, as that's probably the only way she'll find out what he's up to now anyway.

The girl's words only cause Nina's concerned frown to deepen, but she forces herself to shake that off after another few moments. Yes, she's concerned with whatever the man has been doing to that poor girl, just as she's concerned about the well-being of the waitress, but even though it takes her a little effort to lay all of that aside she does so. There are billions of things going on in the world right now that she'd like to fix, and she has her priorities. Still, her eyes narrow at Crane - she may not be prepared to do anything about it, but she certainly doesn't mind letting him know that she's not happy.
And the rest of what he says does nothing to improve her mood. "So you've been wasting my time," she says, referring to his demonstration and making it a statement, not a question. Because if all he wanted to do with it is literally show her the ripples and tell her that they're like brain waves: well, duh. She senses a deeper meaning though... she has her suspicions but if she can fish for more hints she doesn't mind pretending to miss the point completely. Especially if it makes her less interesting.
Distracted by the words, Nina fails to note his hand moving from the table again. Shawty, on the other hand, is quick to note that and is, as always, prepared to make up for her boss's less observant nature in any way she may end up having to.

Bringing VerMillion along was something he certainly didn’t regret. For the most part she stayed quiet and out of the way as he drew up the scene and laid out his plan, however cryptic it was. VerMillion had such a part to play in it and she wasn’t even aware of it. He planned to keep it that way for now, but he doubted she would protest if this was her reaction to everything he did here. Just being at the table he had gotten nothing but positive reaction out of her.
When she spoke up finally it caught Dr. Crane’s attention, turning his chin toward her slightly, though only giving her a glance before his eyes turned back to Dr. Stenet. He almost smiled at the scene itself, showing some approval for what VerMillion had actually said. It wasn’t interrupting; he had said he was done, being somewhat deceptive with his words however.
“Your time?” Dr. Crane asked as she caught his attention with her statement. This wasn’t about her, or her time. This was about his grand plan; she just had a part to play in it. “I don’t blame you for being unable to understand…” He shook his head as he explained in a rather tired monotone voice. She wasn’t going to get the bigger picture. Perhaps he could give her a bit more…
Dr. Crane parted his lips to continue but a woman approached their table with the food the ladies had ordered. It was not the same waitress as before. It was only then he noticed that it had taken quite a large amount of time for their food to come out, considering that it was only one salad and a sandwich. The thought that he probably caused this with the incident that had occurred pleased him in a small way. The waitress must have panicked and asked someone else to bring out their food. She was possibly in the back outside smoking a cigarette to calm her nerves.
Their food was placed down and the waitress left without a word, probably too nervous to say anything knowing what had happened. His attention went back to Dr. Stenet…Of course he was about to explain himself further. “You see while I was at the Asylum, it gave me quite a lot of time to think my next moves through…But then something caught my eye as I was taking my leave of the place…” Dr. Crane explained with a bit of gleam in his eyes. “The files I retrieved were quite interesting, It had been so long I had almost forgotten how-” He paused for a moment to choose the right word. “Personal..Things can get with them.” He finished with a smile almost forming on his face as he recalled the few moments carefully in his mind. It was clear that he knew at least a few things that he shouldn’t. Now if Dr. Stenet could figure it out, which he doubted she could….Right now his aim was to create anxiety in the matter.

When she sees Jon glance her way, Heather smiles at him. Dr. Stenet may be unbelievably boring, but she suspects that beneath that calm facade he's annoying Dr. Stenet even more than the woman is annoying her. And it's a lot easier to bear being annoyed when you're sure someone else is getting it worse.
It's only another moment later when she spots a waitress heading over with the food. "Finally!" she mutters to herself. Being patient is even more difficult when she's on brave toxin than it is normally - she's not afraid of people thinking that she's being rude, and that takes care of most of the reason that she's ever content to wait. If the interactions between Dr. Stenet and Jon weren't keeping her entertained it would have been much worse.
In keeping with the quality of the place, the sandwich is huge and excessively. In fact, after pondering the issue for a moment, Heather opts to eat it with a knife and fork if only because she doubts she could fit something that thick into her mouth at once. She almost suspects that the chef had that in mind when they decided how high to pile it...
As she ponders upon the thickness of her sandwich, she listens idly to what Jon is saying now. And she can't help but smirk a little to herself. She still has no real idea what he's talking about, but it sounds as if he's stumbled upon something that the woman won't be happy about him knowing - and that definitely sounds juicy.

Well of course Nina doesn't understand what he's talking about! She questions whether or not even Edward could figure out what he means, he's being so vague. It probably makes sense in his own mind, but the longer she talks to him the more certain she is about his official mental health status. Perhaps if mind reading was her ability, but it isn't.
Her mental griping about that is interrupted by the arrival of her salad. She notices immediately that it's a different waitress, and gives the woman a distracted, but grateful, "Thank you," when she's served. She doesn't know how much of an appetite she has now, but she's used to eating when she doesn't feel like it. Of course, that's normally because she's had to interrupt her work while she was was onto something truly fascinating and not because she's talking to the Scarecrow. So though she doesn't do so with much enthusiasm, she does start to pick at her salad as he starts to talk about the asylum.
But as he mentions files - specifically ones containing personal things - she frowns and there's the slightest hint of anger in her eyes, though it's very distant. The only connection she personally has ever had with the place was her one visit to Edward. That's probably in the files. Of course, that fact alone isn't a big deal - people do visit Edward, after all. Sure they're usually connected to the legal system - various attorneys - but the fact that she did could mean anything. No, the real question is just how much of the content of the meeting was carefully filed away, and if there was anything on top of that. Perhaps she ought to inquire if Crane doesn't answer that himself...
But aside from that, she doesn't really react. Yes, she'd rather not have anyone know anything at all about what happened there, but now that she and Edward have gone their separate ways, there's really only two facts about that entire situation that she'd care very strongly about anyone else knowing and neither could be deduced by anything that could be found in a record at the asylum. One of them is only known to her and Shawty - not even Edward knows. The other Edward knows, but she doubts that he'd tell anyone that even now. So no, she's not afraid of what Crane may have found out at Arkham. And that's why her voice is calm as she asks, "And what did you find out?" She figures that he only found out the other things, and those just don't matter anymore - whether she wishes differently or not, and whether he chooses to believe that or not.
