The insult didn’t go unnoticed to Edward. Of course he could have created a situation that made her think she could lose her life, but he had a limited time span with limited access to mechanics. Besides he knew she could save herself from a gun, he had planned on it actually. He also, at the time, didn’t think Nina dying was such a horrible idea. It was a win-win situation for him. If she was dead, he could easily move on with his life and everything would go back to normal. It wasn’t until after he thought he might lose her that those benefits flew out the door.
He only half listens to the rest of her rant. He felt like he had heard this topic already. Trust. It was all about trust. She had to be completely foolish to assume that he trusted her especially with the new pain now circulating in his heart. “I trust you more then most,” he answered her question with a sigh.
“I can’t promise you it won’t happen again because I don’t know if you will betray me or not. Yes, you say you won’t and I understand that, but your values greatly differ from mine. I am far from a fool. There will be a day when you battle with your feelings for me and your personal values. One day I will lose to those values, and when that day comes I will be prepared. If you can’t trust me because of that, good. You shouldn’t. Only a complete idiot would ever trust anyone in this business. I…” he closed his eyes as if saying it was painful, “I love you, but if that’s not enough then my statement I said last night still stands. This isn’t going to work.” It’s amazing how easily Edward could give up on a relationship he thought finally would work. All it takes is a slight heartbreak. He understood why Nina would not trust him after being shot, but she had all capability of preventing it. He also wasn’t trying to gain her trust. He never had been. He had never wanted to hurt her, but if she hurt him first he had no problem retaliating.
He rubbed his hand through he hair in an exhausted movement. He was tired of having this discussion. They would get close to a solution and she would ruin it. “Nina, I seriously have better things to do then act like a teenage boy on prom night,” he remarked with a straight-line frown to match the tone in his voice. He wanted out of there. If she was just going to reject him, he didn’t want to be here. “So I need an answer. Is being with me worth it? It’s strange because you already answered that question yet here we are now with you doubting your very answer.” He chuckled to himself. Yes, Nina did that often. She would give him an answer that she thought he wanted to hear then her actions would speak against it. “If I’m worth it, I don’t quite understand why we’re continuing this conversation when it should have ended a while ago. If I’m not, I don’t quite understand why you tried so hard to manipulate me into a false sense of security unless you truly lack the intellectual thought process to realize how cruel that is. You know who I am now, so I ask again, am I worth it?”

When he starts talking, so certain of himself, about how sure he is that she'll betray him eventually, Nina doesn't immediately comment on it. But it's all too easy to see the disbelief in her eyes as she listens. While she can't picture a situation where she would betray him, she understands that someone with Edward's history isn't going to believe that.
When he shifts off of that, her expression becomes softer as he describes his frustrations with all this talking - a very mutual feeling, actually. When he finishes she first says, "I'm not trying to manipulate you, Edward, I'm trying to see if there's a way to resolve what's come between us. This is the last one." It hasn't been such an emotional roller coaster for her because of that numb feeling and the fact that she's been the driving force, but she's getting tired with it herself. Still, she can at least reassure him that it's almost over.
"You are worth so much to me," she answers, and as she says that just a hint of longing comes to her eyes, but it disappears back behind the numbness again very quickly. But then her hand moves to her chest and she says, "But you're not worth being killed by you. Like I said, no man is. If I've been ambiguous it's because I'm not sure if that line will be crossed again." But that's not the end of it, as evidenced by her thoughtful look as she mulls that problem over in her head. "What can you say that you will or will not do without proof that I've betrayed you?" she asks before explaining, "You may not be able to fully trust me, but I fully trust me." Which means that she can count on what he says even if he has to qualify it based on her behavior - to her that would be the same as saying it directly.

He wanted this entire thing to end, but if it was the last thing he could work through it. “Fine,” he said annoyed, “I’m going to be honest and once I say this you’re going to make the choice. I wanted to kill you that night. I wanted you out of my life. I wanted freedom from this…annoyance. If you stopped me I could justify you leaving and if you didn’t stop me you would be dead. I would to be free, but when I fired I realize I had come to a false conclusion. I didn’t want you to die. King of Puzzle and it took me that riddle to finally reach that conclusion. No matter my emotions or wants, I still am not intellectually challenged to let those come in the way of my logical side. I did that once before, and I won’t do it again. For that reason if you do ever betray me, I will kill you,” he said this looking at his hands not at her. He didn’t want to look at her when he proclaimed that, but he turned his eyes back to her when he said this next statement, “But I will only do that with proof. Without proof, I will come to a conclusion that will not risk your life. If the previous occurrence were to occur again I would handle it differently.”
When he was finish he put his hand in his pocket touching his finger against the edge of a lollipop. “If that’s not enough then I guess this is goodbye,” he spoke with an edge his tone, his eyes falling back to the floor.
He would definitely need a tootsie pop after this, and at least he would be spending the majority of his time analyzing Crane’s toxin. He could push this horrible mistake with Nina in the back of his mind and never get involved with a woman in the future. Yes, that was the best choice.

What is perhaps the most remarkable thing about Nina's expression as she listens to Edward is the complete lack of surprise in it. She already knew or guessed all of it, and both the fact that he'd wanted to kill her and that he still would if she betrayed him are blatantly obvious. But though none of it comes as a surprise, she's still inwardly satisfied to hear him mention the way he hadn't expected his own reaction to the event: if she's learned anything from all of this, it's that there's a huge gap between what Edward feels and what he's aware that he feels.
When he finishes, her expression gives away her answer before she can say anything: relief. That and a hint of exhaustion - he did wake her up, after all, and this conversation wasn't an easy one. "It's enough," she answers simply, but when she says them those words seem... inadequate.
"There's a piece of paper in the back right pocket of the pants I was wearing that night," she says suddenly, the faintest of smiles coming to her mouth. For a brief instant, concern that something might have happened to it crosses her mind, but she shoves it away quickly; Edward hadn't bathed while she was unconscious - her pants and the paper with it had probably been tossed and forgotten somewhere.

As he twiddled with the lollipop in his pocket he waited for Nina to say goodbye. His heart cringed, but he ignored it by mentally imaging how many licks it took to get to the tootsie roll center. When she spoke his mouth opened to say a final farewell, but stopped when his mind caught up with him. It’s enough? A confused look appeared on his face followed by a doubtful smile. It’s enough? He just admitted he had wanted her dead and would kill her if she ever betrayed him. She was still willing to be with him? She really planned to never betray him…the thought felt so odd in the back of his mind that it felt like he had just saw a fairy and was trying to justify the fantasy creature. It was enough…this could actually happen… Her next words shake him from his stupor. She had a paper? If she was mentioning it, it must be important. Though he had a hard time believing anything was more important this strange revelation that had just occurred between them. Nonetheless, he nodded and moved to his dresser. Edward had always been an organized man, so when he moved Nina’s clothes he folded them up and put them on top of his dresser. Part of him had wanted to burn them with the amount of blood and how torn up they had become, but they were not his clothes. He had no right to dispose of them. It was a good thing he hadn’t; though, he definitely would have emptied the pockets before tossing it into the flames. He moved the shirt to the side and grabbed her jeans. He found the back right pocket then reached in with his hands. As she stated he found a folded up piece of paper. It didn’t appear to be anything special. He put the pants on top of the dresser with the shirt then turned his attention to the paper. He unfolded it. Not leaving Gotham is a horrible idea. Interests and work can be pursued no matter the location. Gather your research and use opportunities to benefit both yourself and humanity. My personal opinion is irrelevant, but hopefully you will make the intellectual choice. After you sacrifice your stubborn attitude, of course. He read his hurried scratched out handwriting then read it again. It was the letter he wrote to her when she wouldn’t leave Gotham. “ Why do you have this on you?” he found himself asking.

There's a brief pause as Nina considers how to answer that question now that she's prompted it. "For a number of reasons, actually - it's been in my pocket since the day I got it," she says, her smile growing a little, "At the time it was the only thing I'd ever gotten from you. And the first sign I ever had that you, on some level at least, had any concern for me - I didn't realize that those other letters were your fault until I read that. And it's still the only tangible thing you've ever giving me that really means anything - even if that requires a little reading between the lines. That, among other things, is why it has meaning for me."
"As for why I felt the need to keep it in my pocket instead of some place safer - I suppose it's because I like keeping a piece of you close to me," she explains. And it judge by how worn the folds are, it hasn't just sat in her pocket but been opened and reopened a number of times. She's not sure if Edward would see that as her just being too sentimental, but it's also the best proof she has of just how long she's felt at least enough love for him to cherish a simple piece of paper from him.
As for why she's showing this to him now... Perhaps it will ease some of the difficulty and hurt from the conversation that they just finished better than the words that wouldn't come a moment ago.

His eyes continued to read over the hasty letter. He had been so furious at her, which at this point had become a constant recurrence. When she hadn’t followed his clear warning he had assumed she tossed the letter into the trash as she did the rest of them, yet here the letter sat in his hand. He looked up at her as she started speaking. He was slightly amazed that a small written note to her could hold so much meaning, but she was right.
He had written this after he realized he had some sort of feelings for the woman in front of him. He wanted her safe, and if a letter allowed for that to happen he would write one personally. Of course, that entire plan backfired. It was his first mistake, yet he couldn’t be horribly upset over it. The mistake had lead to this point now, and at this point…he felt happy. He smiled as he watched her own small smile. Her words were a little too cheesy for Edward’s taste and he knew Hallmark would have a field day with such a line, but a large part of him loved it.
“For such an intelligent girl you seem a bit romantic,” he smirked jokingly though in all honesty, Edward could be quite a romantic himself. When he took a girl on a date, it was full of candle light dinners, stars, and roses. Though there was a hidden message and façade behind it usually in the aspect of his bedroom. But if he were to take Nina out, he would make it a perfect night. Not to manipulate her, but just to see that small smile. He folded up the letter as he walked over to the bed again. He sat down next to her and put the folded paper on her lap. He couldn’t fully explain it, but he couldn’t touch her. His normal naturally high confidence still felt shot down from the previous rejection. So he only smiled at her, feeling slightly awkward by the current situation. “That was one of my worst written riddles if you could even call it that. It proves how easily you can stumble my thoughts,” he added randomly, “I’ll write you a better message sometime…a riddle…within a poem. Yes, a poem. I haven’t written one in years,” he started talking to himself just trying to prevent any chance of an awkward silence.

"Oh?" Nina asks, her voice a little too innocent for her to not be joking as well, "Is there such a thing as being too romantic now?" Then again, that's really more of a half-joke: she loves that stuff, whether other people regard it as cheesy or not.
And there's something refreshing about being able to so casually say something on the subject of romance to Edward now: it had taken him entirely too long to figure out his feelings, and she'd held back her own to avoid putting him off when he wasn't really ready to hear them. But now, as difficult as it was to get rid of, that barrier is no longer between them either.
When he sits next to her, it only takes her a moment to feel like there's something wrong. And she doesn't particularly care to hear him talking like that letter isn't good enough - in her opinion it's perfect for what it is. The imperfections of it make it seem more real than something too well thought over. Really, she wishes that he would just shut up.
But just as that though occurs, she realizes what's wrong: he's keeping his distance and rambling on about a poem. And an instant later, she realizes why: the last time he was sitting right there, she stopped him. Of course, then she had a good reason, which no longer exists - for the most part, anyway. She only has his word to go by, but he definitely seemed to mean it. Of course, the last time she accepted his word he seemed to mean it too; this time she's going to have to see him stand by it a time or two before she'll really trust it. But in the mean time, she means to fully give him another chance which means that the barrier he now feels no longer exists for her.
Fortunately, both the distance and the rambling have the same solution: Smirking, she takes the letter off her lap and sets it aside. Then, since it's hard for her to reach him very easily without sitting up too far, she grabs his tie and uses it to pull him close enough for them to finish that kiss that she so rudely interrupted - and this time there's no reluctance behind it at all. Easily the best way to both get someone to stop talking and give them permission to touch you there is.

His eyes widen when he felt his tie pulling him back. He doesn’t protest the movement, instead he follow it to her lips. He found himself smirking at her teasing motion. Why had he been nervous? The thought seemed so muddled compared to what was happening now. He dropped his cane to the ground, and shifted his body so he could deepen the kiss. His one hand went into her hair as his other supported some of his weight. He couldn’t describe his exact emotion at the moment. He felt happy, but it felt encompassing. This kiss felt different and intensified his sense touch. His fingers grazed lightly down along her soft neck. Yes, he loved this static feeling along his skin. He wondered if she felt like this everywhere.
He left her lips and started a trail of kisses along her jaw line up to her ear, as he shifted his weight so his legs were on the bed. His confidence was back, and that was all he needed to say this next part. “Did you know that sexual intercourse has the ability to lower stress, lower blood pressure, increase immunity, and help a person look four years younger?” he smirked as he whispered into her ear. His hand near her neck had dipped towards her top and was slowly pulling down the edge of it. His other hand still supported most of his weight, even though with each breath he could feel her chest against his. He wanted to keep going. He normally wouldn’t even wait for the go ahead look from the woman, but with everything finally working out he didn’t want to mess it up.
So he brought his lips into a kiss under her earlobe and waited for a sign that would give the key to the puzzle box.

When their lips meet this time, Nina feels the last of that horrible numb feeling leave her. As terrible and as difficult and as awful as things were between them only a short while ago and despite her lingering doubts, the one thing that she can't argue with is that this feels right. Her free hand moves to the back of his head, encouraging him closer and insisting he stay there. She could feel goosebumps on her skin wherever he touched - it was a good feeling.
When his lips move she practically melts underneath that new sensation, and when he whispers into her ear she's barely thinking straight enough to understand the words. "Of course I know that, I'm a doctor," she murmurs back, her voice teasing. And if the fact that she wasn't repelled by that question isn't enough of a sign, the fact that the hand she was using to hold his tie immediately moves to loosen it should be. The suit may make him look handsome, but now it's just in the way.

He smirked against her skin at her remark. If that wasn’t a green light he didn’t know what was. His fingers automatically traveled from her collarbone to the front of her shirt. He started undoing the buttons with little to no effort. His lips traveled lower as he unbuttoned the shirt so he could touch the new revealing skin. When he was younger, he had been fascinated with the riddle of the woman’s body, but then again what boy wasn’t. Eventually he grew out of his awkward stage and into the man he was today, which allowed him many opportunities to figure out the exact points to get the reactions he wanted. It reminded him of a Chinese Puzzle Box. Once you understood the method, they were easy.
He felt his own clothes being taken apart, and he pulled away from her for only a moment to help her take off his jacket and shirt. Good thing he hadn’t put on a three piece, though he had to admit seeing Nina tackling his clothes with her own slipping off caused an underlying urge to travel along his skin. He wanted her. When his shirt and jacket fell to the ground, his hand flew back behind her neck as he pulled her into another deep kiss while his other hand went to her waist, pulling her slightly bare body against his. He couldn’t quite remember why he had ever wanted to hurt her. Why would he want to hurt what was his. She was his, and he would make sure that she wanted to be his after this. His own personal riddle, yes, he liked that.
----
He moved off of her landing his head tiredly on the pillow next to her. His breathing was heavy, but it didn't stop the smirk from coming on his face. Nigma, you still got it.
