As they walk, and chat, Selina is mildly shocked at Charlotte's swimming comment. Hm. Well that should be remedied. "Do you want to learn?" She asks nonchalantly. The hand was offered out of habit; and partially out of memory. But the memory of a 12 year old is quite different when applied to a teenager of sixteen. She is glad that Charlotte takes it, if even for a short time. Because the crowds are thick, and Selina is still a bit skeptical.
Laughing to the next response, Selina glances down at Charlotte. "Police Station."
They're inside, and at a booth, glad for the quiet corner. It's not long before their waitress is before them, barely writing a word down before taking their order. Selina orders a diet coke as well.
It's only after the girl has left that Selina starts scrawling an order on one of the sheets she snagged from the waitress' pocket. She has her own pen. It's a quick order, one she's quite familiar with. 1 large anchovy and jalapeno pizza. 1 large sausage and pepperoni with olives. and 1 medium veggie pizza. Breadsticks.
She leaves off if it's to be delivered, or they're going to bring it themselves. They can figure that out later.
Turning to Charlotte, she looks over the girl for a second. "I'm glad you knew what you wanted. I can never pin down what I want here. The calzones are fantastic, their pizza is to die for, the sandwhiches are as big as the plates, even." She demonstrates with her hands, before asking one last question, almost with a waver in her normal confidence.
"What did you think of Theo? Other than-" she motions to her own face, realizing he did look pretty beat up.

Does she want to learn to swim? Charlotte hasn't ever really thought about it before. Though she laughs to herself as she observes, "It's funny - now that I think about it, when people talk about swimming it's okay to know how to swim or not know how to swim, but being a beginner at swimming at my age is not 'cool'." Which strikes her as funny because, yes, when you think about that it's kind of dumb. Then again, that could be said about pretty much any 'rule' about being cool. "Um, I guess I could... is it hard?" Which she's asking making because she's beginning to learn a lot of new skills right now - a lot of them physical - and so how much more time is that out of her schedule? She's finding that she doesn't suffer when she doesn't have much down time, but she does need a lot of homework time to catch up on what she's behind on.
"Oh..." she replies when Selina clarifies about the station, making a face. She really doesn't like cops. Which is why she doesn't really want to comment on whether or not they should bring in pizza or drop off pizza - how about they not give cops pizza? But since she doesn't figure that opinion will go over well, she keeps it to herself.
Tacking a root beer to her order when the waitress comes, Charlotte doesn't seem to be bothered by Selina fussing with the paper. She's tired, sore, and hungry, so she doesn't mind just being able to sit for a bit and not have to think too hard about anything. Luckily, thinking about her opinion on 'Theo' isn't hard at all. "Heh, I don't know - he's a cop. And it's like he doesn't 'get' that he's old," she says, and based on the way she says it neither of those are good things.

Selina smiles at Charlotte, shaking her head. "I can teach you at the pool at home. Once you get a few basics down, you're good to go. And considering how you take to most physical things like a fish to water, you should be good."She cracks a slight laugh at Charlotte's words and thinks on them herself. "Home pool, then. And being 'cool' isn't always what it's cracked up to be. It's usually just a set of biased opinions of those that are somehow a bit qwirkier, or know different information before others." It's a heirarcy she doesn't like, but then again, she's seen as 'cool' or 'standoffish' by those in her differnt social standing groups as well. As their drinks are dropped by, Selina barely catches the face pulled by Charlotte. "Hey now. I was your age, and busted several times. I don't exactly like the police, but hell, one of the good ones is a close friend of mine. I know my life might not be the most interesting, especially to you, but while I'd say 85% of the PD here are corrupt, not all of them are."Reaching around her neck she pulls off a slender sliver chain, complete with two pendants on it. She sets it on the table between them. "That was a birthday present on my eighteenth birthday." She didn't get anything fancy, but she wasn't striving for that at eighteen. Is all she says, before the topic moves on to her 'old cop friend.' Charlotte certainly has a way with words, and she has to bite her tongue not to say anything yet. Sipping on her drink, she shakes her head as she tries not to laugh. "He's an old soul. But he is immature in some ways. And only a bit older than me, even with," she motions to the sides of her head, where Harvey has two clear patches of silver in his dark hair. "And yes, he's a cop, but he values family before that. He got tangled with the Joker, which is why his arm, and his face. Trouble finds him."
Crossing her legs, she realizes while she has kinda told Charlotte about what has gone on with the Joker and that night, she probably should enlighten the girl a bit more. Then again, Charlotte is quite good at letting her know when she's going to a friend's after school, or where she will be. And Selina likes to do the same. Technology is fantastic in this day and age. And the respect for her private life is amazing, considering all the peculiarities of it.

Harvey had eventually made it back to work, picking up a sandwich on his way back. He had plenty of paper work to file, so he would be able to eat as he went.
He sat there, typing away at his computer and occasionally browsing around and getting into his case files for whatever he needed all the while taking a bite out of his Reuben every here and there. Finally, a few hours later he was nearing the end of his day, he sat back, sneaking a little nip of gin from his desk and then lighting a cigar. He relaxed for a moment and then remembered that envelope Selina gave him. He pulled it out of his jacket and opened it and pulled out the paper work inside and began reading it.
His expression went from generally relaxed to something a little more pensive as he read through. They were papers that, when presented to the correct people, would name Harvey the legal guardian of Charlotte Geier were Selina Kyle were to ever become incapacitated, missing, and/or deceased. Harvey's heart dropped, this was the most responsibility Selina ever put upon him in their lives. He sighed after a moment and looked it over one more time before signing his name in the proper place. He folded the papers back up, placed them back in the envelope, and tucked it away in a safe place in his desk before heading home.

Nodding at that, Charlotte looks mildly relieved - learning it like that should be great! Spares her from accidentally doing anything embarrassing somewhere more public... And yes, she's come to realize that she does take to these physical things pretty easily - hopefully that means that swimming is a cinch and then nobody will be the wiser that she didn't learn as a kid. "But cooler girls get cuter boyfriends," she replies without thinking. And a second later, after she's thought, she adds, "...or so I hear." Yeah, real smooth...
At least talking to Selina is a lot easier now than it used to be. Even if she isn't thrilled by the mini-lecture about cops - every time they've appeared in her life they've made it worse, so she has her bias and she's sticking to it. But as she's come to see and accept that Selina is nothing like either of her foster mothers, it's become a lot easier. Though she doesn't see the woman as being like a mother to her - she already has one of those, even though she sucks. Selina's too young and cool for that anyway, though also too old to be like a big sister. Maybe more like a younger, unmarried aunt? Yeah, something like that...
Glancing at the pendants that Selina shows her, there's a hint of amusement in her eyes as Selina reacts to her description of 'Theo'. Though the amusement quickly vanishes at the mention of the Joker. Yes, Selina said something about that, but the very idea makes Charlotte nervously shift in her seat. "I don't like trouble," she says quietly, picking up her root beer and sipping it pensively. Especially not the kind of trouble that's fond of making people explode...

Selina's sipping at her drink when the boyfriend comment comes up. And almost does her drink as she starts to cough and sputter slightly, her napkin moving to cover up her mouth.
After a moment or two of hacking and taking another swig of her soda, she cracks a huge grin at Charlotte. It is quite true that the 'cooler' girls do get the better men. But then it depends on what your definition of 'cool' is in the first place. And that's a debate she'd rather mull over with Ivy, than a sixteen year old. "Mmm. They do. But you have to make sure the guy is just as cool, or it's not worth your time." She smiles at the girl. "But then again, having more than one boyfriend is difficult to schedule around, some times." She adds as well, even if it's a bit cryptic.
They have both discussed the men in Selina's life before. And the wide range they go from. She'd be hard pressed to find any one man that is 'entirely good.' Bivins is almost there, but is he a man? is the real question. Bruce is seen as boring and eccentric [from Charlotte's standpoint], Batman is a mystery, but a bit more accepted. Harvey is only a stone's throw away. And the others? Well, she's trying hard to keep them a decent distance from the teen. So far. Dick is a cop, Tim is a pre-teen, and there are the boys at school. As she's mentally going down this list, she reaches between them and taps the table.
"And no, trouble of that sort isn't good. The Joker is never fun, or funny in what he does. Ever." She can hear a whipser of Rooster's words in her mind as she watches the girl. A teen who has caused her more pain and love than she'd thought was possible. And maternal pride. So while they are passing the time between waiting for pizza she brings up an offshoot of the 'cool' topic.
"Have you seen any cool boys at school, or practice?" She'd noticed one of the guys at gymnastics is damn good, but doesn't know if that's enough to get the 16 year old's attention.

Though Charlotte immediately regretted her comment, on second thought she decides that she doesn't regret it simply because of Selina's reaction. She can't help but grin to herself as Selina coughs and sputters - it's not like she said anything that's not true or anything. Though she knows that adults are quick to preach that there are no hopeless cases when it comes to finding someone, anyone who says that the cooler and more attractive people don't have a better shot at it is lying and everyone knows that.
Selina's words get an amused if slightly nervous smile as she says, "Well, I'd be happy with one, good boyfriend..." ...Unlike Selina, with her two questionable boyfriends and a really close cop friend, though she keeps that thought to herself. Having zero experience in this area herself, she can't say for certain that she wouldn't like having that many guys around her, but she suspects not if only because it sounds... complicated. Besides, like she said the goal is one, and that's plenty enough for a girl who doesn't even know what having one is like.
A quick nod is all the response that Charlotte feels the need to give about the Joker - she'd question the sanity of anyone who would try to argue anything other than that the man is nothing but bad news and it's best to keep as far away from him as humanly possible. In fact, the mere thought of being around him is enough to make Charlotte shudder a little, which is exactly what she does after she sips her drink. The clown - definitely creepy...
Eager enough to move on from that thought, she's perhaps not as resistant to answering Selina's question as she might have otherwise been. Then again, it's not like she has anything interesting to say on that subject. "Oh, there's a lot of them at school," she replies, but is quick to add, "Most of them have girlfriends though, and I'm still kind of 'the new girl', so I don't know if any of them like me. I mean like me and aren't just being nice because I'm new." She pauses with a frown before adding, "I, um, know a couple of guys who do like me, but... they're not cool..." Or she's just being picky... But ever since Selina took her in, she's pretty sure that the mirror has been telling her that she can afford to have some standards. And she'd like a boyfriend, yes, but not desperately.

Fessing up, Selina pauses as their pizza is set before them, the deep dish pizza cut and served to them first, the breadsticks steaming on the table too.
"I kinda suck at this sort of advice. I didn't really date until I was in my twenties." She admits with a shrug.
"And school for me sucked. I was in public school in Gotham, on the streets for a few years, then sent to an all girls' boarding school. Then I went to University overseas." Which in all honesty didn't help her at all with 'dating' skills. Her best friend was a cop, and her other best friend was a feral black cat.
Nodding as she tries their pizza, she listens, then grins at the teen. "You can play up the 'mysterious new girl' angle if you wanted. And..what makes these other guys 'not cool.' Because one person's cool is another person's 'uncool,' if you really think about it. A matter of preference."

Selina's admission causes Charlotte to give a surprised, "Really?" Because it's hard to imagine that Selina was any less beautiful and poised when she was younger, and if so she should have been swamped with guys her entire life, right? Then again, the possibility of dating while you're on the streets is... you just want to avoid it. And an all-girls boarding school would certainly put a damper on things. Well, unless you swing that way. Charlotte doesn't. Or at least she's pretty sure...
The pizza has arrived though, so for a moment Charlotte lets her thoughts turn to the sheer deliciousness of a pizza with too much cheese on it. Sooo good! She puts a large dent into one as Selina comments on trying to work the 'new girl' thing to her advantage, which causes a grin. Though the grin fades when she goes on to ask about the uncool guys. After all, she doesn't want to be accused of being shallow or something, but honestly there's a lot of guys at her new school that are just plain undatable in her eyes. "Um, well, they're freshmen, boring, ugly, just... gross, and/or really... weird. I dunno..." she says with a shrug, before trying to defend that against any possible objections by adding, "I bet that if you met them you'd say that I could do better." Because, even as open-minded as she credits Selina to be, she's sure that the woman would agree with her on that point.

Selina nods, smiling around her bite of food at the shock with the teen. In haste she finishes chewing to speak. "I'm not really...into girls so my high school years...were wane. And the streets...well you know how those go." While it might, or may be hard to think that she was on the streets, she was. And it was an experience that she would never forget. It was one of many bricks that had made her who she was this day.
Reeling back on the 'when I was your age' stories, Selina focuses on devouring her own food, closing her eyes and relishing the taste. It's been a few months since she's been here, and each time it's amazing in it's own right. Wiping her mouth she goes for her beverage, shrugging. "Age, honestly is a number. In high school it's a bit taboo to date someone younger, but once you hit about twenty-three, things even out. But when in doubt, if you find someone you have something in common with, start at friends. Hang out. You never know where things will end up, and it's a good foundation to start at, even if it never goes romantic."
"Well, as your," she pauses, trying to come up with a suitable non-maternal-yet-compassionate term for what she is in Charlotte's life, "-not quite mother, but more a cool aunt-older-but-not-too-old figure, I'd have to say I need to meet the kid. I try not to judge a book by it's cover. Sometimes there isn't even a cover."
And that part is true. Life is messy, and not always truly black and white, or grey, or even shades of some shade of a primary color. So her own set of 'judgments' is quite different than most women's. Or people's. But there are a few true 'rules' that hold fast no matter what.

The fact that dating a guy so much younger than herself is taboo alone is enough to convince Charlotte to avoid doing so. Yes, age may be just a number and it won't matter when she's older, but that is not now - she'll save having any interest in younger guys until then. The rest of Selina's advice gets a somewhat bored nod while she eats her pizza - yes, yes, she's had that stupid lecture about being friends before. From pretty much every adult who has given her advice on boys since her first childhood crush.
She can't help an amused smile as Selina attempts to describe the difficult to pinpoint sort of familial relationship they've been developing, and pretty much nails it. Though it fades very quickly when Selina doesn't take her word for it that the guys she's describing are just not... for her. "Even if the book is titled 'Acne for Dummies'?" she asks, as that's one particular cover that makes you not want to look at the book even if the inside is excellent. At least not until he finds a way to fix it or his hormones stop doing that to him.

Selina shrugs, and notes the change in response as they eat. Wrong avenue, but she'll go with it. Her nose wrinkles as thatsort of cover is mentioned. "In that sort of case, hopefully you wouldn't be needing help in that sort of ...circumstance." Now that was a whopper of a question she hadn't expected. And she has a feeling there will be more peculiar, out of left field questions like this the more time they spend together.
As she starts in on her second piece of pizza, she is glad they stopped here, because it honestly does have some of the most fantastic pizza she's had in her life; and she's been to Italy. The little hole in the wall in Gotham makes it just how you want, and then improves upon it in the best ways. There is no way you could eat an entire Pizza from here. Unless you were hungry, or there was a major bet. And there was good money being bet. And you were hungry and aiming to win a few dollars.

Nodding easily, Charlotte is mildly relieved that Selina isn't going to launch into a lecture about how she shouldn't avoid guys based on their appearance since that shouldn't matter because... well, yes it does. She wouldn't say that they couldn't be her friend or something, but date them? Um, no...
"Well, all the guys at my school who I know like me have... well, not that problem but... stuff like that," she explains. Just something that makes them, well, not datable in her book. Not because she's being picky, at least not more than she thinks is reasonable, but because... well, there are just some things she doesn't want to date.
And having said that, she turns her attention back to the pizza, content to enjoy it in silence. Yep, she definitely made a good choice when she decided what she wanted to eat, and she's not for the first or last time glad that Selina isn't one of those people who insist that she has to eat healthy or whatever. It's not like she's prone to getting fat or something - she can get away with it.

Lectures never get you anywhere. Even with teens. She'd sat through enough she'd ignored to know that lengthy diatribes on good vs bad and do this vs don't do this aren't going to hit home. Talking does. Being there when there are questions does.
So she eats her food, waiting until Charlotte speaks back up. Wiping at her mouth she nods before responding. "Well, then it sounds like you already have good judgement on what you like, and don't like. And if there are any other questions beyond that, you know I'm here." She half-smiles at the teen before taking a sip of her drink. She doesn't quite know if Charlotte would come to her with a concern, but at least she's making a non-judgmental offer, in case the need does arise.
So it seems both adult and near-adult turn back to eating in a comfortable silence, at least on her end. They both lead a rather active life, so food like this is necessary. Quite.
