It was a Friday afternoon in Gotham city hundreds of citizens were clamoring to hear words that Commissioner James Worthington Gordon of the Gotham City Police department had to say. A press conference was going to take place in less than five minutes, one that had been planned for over two months now. A conference that drew hundreds of Gothamites right outside of the GCPD headquarters, such things weren't called for events other than crimes. They never lasted for more than five to ten minutes. This afternoon was special, everyone in attendance knew what was going to happen, everyone in attendance knew what Gordon was going to talk about. The reason that the conference was called was because of Arkham city. A project that Commissioner Gordon had been against since the very beginning, the man had spots on the evening and daily news because of this, he's had editorials in the paper. Everything the man has done never seemed like it was enough. No matter how much James Gordon spoke up, the Mayor refused to stop the project. Mayor Quincy Sharpe was convinced that Arkham city was a good thing.
Sixty seconds before Commissioner Gordon was going to speak, the front end of the police station was absolutely full with citizens and civilians that had just got off work, came from their homes to listen to what Gordon had to say. A lot of the normal working families really appreciated Gordon and what he stood for, they felt like that he was their voice. A voice that the Mayor seldom listened to. Some Gotham residents liked the idea of Arkham city, a lot of them hated it, though that was expected with a city that was so full to the brim. Not only with people, but with crime and other dangerous events. Some people didn't care, there would be some that thought it wouldn't matter either way. One man was entirely convinced that Arkham City was the worst idea to ever come out of the city council. He was wholly convinced that it wasn't just Mayor Sharpes idea. Every day for three weeks, Gordon drove to where Arkham City was being built. He saw the monstrosity being raised in his city.
A prison that would be a mockery of the very justice he believed in, it hurt Gordon because he knew that something more was at work here. Something that was dark and evil, Arkham city would be nothing more than a hive of scum and villainy. There had to be something that could be done about it. Commissioner Gordon worked himself to the bone each and every day for over forty years for the GCPD. He only wanted to save Gotham, he wanted everyone in Gotham to be safe, he wanted a city that didn't need Batman. He knew better, he knew that would probably never come true. James Gordon was a true shell of the man he once used to be. He would still fight for his city, Arkham city had to be stopped.
James Gordon didn't know what Gotham needed, who did? The man was lost in his thoughts, even after he was introduced he just stood there. Lost from what to say, deeply lost in his self-conscious. This had been a decision he had been dwelling over an extremely long time. People have told him over and over again that it was something he should pursue. Gordon himself? He always said the same thing. "I don't do politics." Of course people told him he should run for Mayor, it was only expected. Someone very smart told Gordon once, that he was already in politics. That running for Mayor would just be a step up from what he was already doing.
At his core, James W Gordon hated politics with a passion. He didn't want to become the same thing he was fighting against all these years.
Five minutes into the press conference and Gordon was still silent. Without another minute passing by, Gordon reached for his badge that was on his belt, and held it up to the crowd.
"This is my shield. The very shield I utilize to protect all of you. What do others see this as? They just see it as a badge, a symbol of power. That is how former Commissioner Loeb saw it. That is how a lot of the former police officers of this department saw it. Me? No, I see it as a shield. A tool that lets me protect all of you. Let's me protect this great city. What Mayor Sharpe and the rest of the council are doing? That makes the city worse off than it already is. They want to put all of you in danger. What they are doing is inhumane, it must be stopped." Gordon stopped in his speech, taking a breath.
"I once lived in a city where THIS was a symbol of abused power. No longer is that the case. This is now a symbol of protection, a symbol of safety. What the city council is doing? Arkham city? That is a symbol of abused power. Something that a shield should protect against." The man took a deep breath, placing his badge back on his belt.
"In the past few months I've been on the news, I've had articles in the paper about my crusade against Arkham City. None of it worked. I see now that Arkham City will not be stopped. I see now that there needs to be a leadership change. Those of you that know me... You know that ten years ago? I would have never considered this. But now? I almost see no choice. There needs to be a change, Arkham City needs to be fought against. If not? What will happen? Chaos in Arkham city? What if Tyger fails? Those criminals in there all together? That is chaos waiting to happen. Criminals like the Joker? What about the ones with metahuman powers? What happens then? Unwarranted death and destruction."
Gordon shut his eyes, sighing heavily. He gave what was in his head one last moment of consideration. Should he really go through with what he was about to do?
"This conference isn't so I can make a scene, or complain to the masses. I've already done that. Something drastic has to be done. That is why I'm announcing my candidacy for Mayor of Gotham city in the upcoming election."
