Tonight was finally the night where his young (not to mention, newest and most current) protégé Tim, would be able to finally don the Robin mask and work his first patrol route around the city with Bruce. Tonight would mark the first night for Batman to officially have Robin by his side fighting crime and imposing vigilante justice. He had spent the part of the past year in not only indoctrinating the then 12-year-old boy, Tim Drake, into a member of the Bat Family – but had also vigorously, obsessively, and expertly trained him in all forms of tactical combat, weapon usage, espionage, gadget deployment, some mild vehicle operation, and computer tech skills, in an effort to mold him into the next Robin of Gotham. Now, Tim had turned 13 and had lately begun to demonstrate his talent for executing the required skills he was learning, going from “improving” to “test-run ready”.
The decision to take Tim out on patrol tonight had not been made easily – for Bruce still thought the boy needed to better hone his focus of strength and dexterity on his given combat targets. He also felt the boy needed to work on his Jiu Jitsu technique as his jabs and sidekicks were sloppy in their delivery. Then again, when it came to Tim’s abilities of working with any high-tech gadgetry or accessing/developing computer programs and simulations? He was absolutely ingenious! In fact, Tim had surpassed Bruce when he was the boy’s age, in his ability to modify tech equipment or understand digital programming.
So, Bruce finally decided that Tim’s fighting abilities would probably best become more finely tuned if he were to use them in a real world scenario, rather than continuing the seemingly endless hours of sparring with Bruce and combat dummies inside the Bat Cave. After a few hours of dreary darkness settled upon the already gloomy Gotham, Bruce gave the signal for Tim to suit up for tonight’s lesson – joining Batman on his evening patrol. Once the notorious dynamic duo Batman and Robin, blazed off together in the Batmobile heading towards the heart of the city – sure to take lone stretches of hidden/unmarked roads to get there all along the way, the Bat finally spoke to Robin in his typical grim, gravelling growl, deep tone.
“When you patrol with me the most important rule you must obey is to ALWAYS do as I say – follow my orders. The very second you fail to follow that rule? You’re done as Robin, indefinitely. I know these streets and the scum that plagues them like the back of my hand. Never forget, this is MY city and I won’t let it claim you as just another one of its countless homicide statics. That’s BEST case scenario if you happen to disobey my orders, by the way.”
The Batmobile was parked a way off from any given noticeable sight or populated area within the shadowy, murky warehouse dockyard of Gotham’s East End. Once both were out of the battle-ready, black armored, bat-themed vehicle, Batman set up the Batmobile’s security system and camouflage protection – turning the tank of a “car” near invisible to the naked eye.
“Tonight you’ll shadow me. And I mean be as QUICK and as SILENT as a shadow. I don’t want to hear a single footstep or gravel crunch from a glide landing. You need to work on fine tuning your prowling abilities. They are your most important resource on the field because they give the advantage of scoping out your target first before being spotted yourself. What’s the other advantage prowling skills give you?”
Before Robin had a chance to answer, in a single flash of movement, Batman pulled out his specialized grappling gun and fired it with a muffled “pop” towards his targeted aim towering above them in the sky. His aim hit its mark (as per usual) with the grappling gun’s hook having now securely clasped around the rooftop ledge of a 12 story abandoned building looming to the side of where both of them stood. In the blink of an eye Batman was gone, lifting like a silent ghost’s shadow up into the darkness above – pulled up along the retracting grapple line to reach the building’s rooftop.
He landed in a perfect crouch of total silence and gave pause for Robin to join him up top where he would then start his routine of running his nightly patrol route. He also waited for the boy’s answer to his pop-quiz question – just because Tim had earned his chance to apply his physical skills in the real world, didn’t mean he was free from all other training exercises.
