"In everything truth surpasses its imitation or copy" Marcus Tullius Cicero
There were whispers in Metropolis, a quiet undercurrent of murmurs throughout the city regarding the lack of official information regarding what was only called "The Teaboro Incident." Each retelling was spoken only in horror, of the monster that came from beneath the Earth, the way that it transformed people to mush, absorbing them in a horrific orgy of skin and bone, growing into a monstrosity until over 200 men, women and child had died. Whispers came of how Superman had saved them all, and only Whispers. In the vast ocean of Metropolitan Citizenry it was little more than a drop. Photographs had supposedly surfaced in the first day or so, but were shady and blurry. Nothing close to the creature had been taken. One video had surfaced, but it was inconclusive, and any other videos were little more than rumors, relegated to the dark spots of the internet. Witness accounts had been reported, but now there were none. Not one news story, the police reports were missing, and all video recordings of Teaboro at that time had disappeared, marked Classified. But the dead remained dead, the families tearful, and even then only the whispering remnants of a rumor.
There were giants in Metropolis, there were monsters out of nightmares, they hid under the subways, they were invisible, they were from space. . . Superman had brought them, they were made by LexCorp, they were coming for the children, the Government Knew about it and wanted it covered up, there were Bioweapons, Kryptonian perhaps? God knows they'd never been there BEFORE Superman came. Don't be stupid, Superman is here to save us! But what if that were a ruse? What if he was only saving us from terrors he brought? Did monsters attack Metropolis before Superman?
What if nothing was going on at all? Obviously if something real happened there'd be more than a single shaky cellphone video on the internet, half remembered memories and whispers. The video had been horrific, a giant thing that just touched a person, and absorbed them. Teeth on its skin, boiling with eyes and constant gibbering screams. The video had been taken from the top of a building over a mile away on an old 8mm camera, nothing digital, or so they'd said. It had thrown things into further confusion. The monster was there in the street, from underground. . . Superman had saved them, came in and picked up the creature. He was unaffected. Was he behind it? Was it Kryptonian technology? Was it an alien? Was it a bioweapon? Why had Lex Luthor come to investigate?
Why didn't he deny the situation when asked? Why did he only say "Any situation involving unknown meta-events or bioweapons is currently under investigation." Why were there so many rumors on the streets about Superman, and why was there no evidence?
Questions. Nothing but questions without answers, there had been joy and happiness when Kara flew over Metropolis before. There still was, but then again, there was still the sidewards glance, the inevitable and quiet "if" that sat in the back of the mind of certain metropolitan citizens that was growing.
The area of Teaboro was blocked off as the crews repaired the torn up roads. Remnants of destruction had been there, although officially it was seen as "scheduled road repair" and little more. Whispers throughout the city. Rumors. . .
Until today, the rumors had been general, not specific towards anything in particular. But now a single voice was heard among the cacophany, audible to superior Kryptonian hearing: "We've moved the Teaboro project, all of the research, all of the supplies, all of the samples. The bioweapon was moved into the facility underneath Metropolis General Hospital. There are more than adequate subjects there for further testing."
A response "Metropolis has ears, they could be listening even now. Wait until we get inside. . . "
The first voice "The Alien isn't here, he's in Japan dealing with some volcano. We're fine"
The response "I didn't know Japan was still volcanically active."
The first voice "Everyone knows that Japan is still active. The entire island chain is based on volcanic activity. It's how the hot springs keep warm. I went there on my honeymoon, they've got these hot baths, Onii-chans. . . "
The response from the second voice "I thought that was something else."
The first voice "No, they're called Onii-chans. I went there on my honeymoon, so I should know . . . "
Then the voices faded out, muffled as they walked inside somewhere with baffling technologies.
