He smirked at her comment of telling the truth as the oven beeped announcing its finish. He grabbed the handle and pulled open the oven door. He used the glove from the cabinet and pulled out the chicken. He laid the chicken out on the counter before grabbing some plates. He put the plates down on the counter then transferred the noodles to booth. He poured the sauce on the noodles then moved a chicken on top of the pasta. He walked over to the fridge and pulled out two strips of swiss cheese. He always liked Swiss, something about it’s missing pieces made it seem like something he could solve.
He heard her comment as he laid the cheese down on the hot chicken, watching as it melted. “Of course it does,” he remarked with a cocky smile, “I live in the time where woman no longer know how to cook. Luckily, I know everything so it never deterred my life.” He leaned his cane against the counter and grabbed the plates. Not holding his cane while he walked always gave him a strange feeling of emptiness, but he wasn’t going to have her carry his food out. It wasn’t polite for the host to make the guest work. Manners were very keen in Edward’s eyes.
He walked out of the kitchen with the plates. There was an obvious limp in his walk that came and without the cane the pain became a bit more noticeable. He just bit through it as always until he made it to his dining room table, laying the plates out next to the silverware already there. He walked back to the kitchen and grabbed his cane and glass of wine.
As he walked back out to see Nina moving to the table, he thought back to the quick kiss he had just given her. He was starting to notice a strange patterned that happen every time he kissed her. She always became a bit quieter as if trying to think of something to say. He smirked to himself, so she was affected by him. What woman wasn’t? He inwardly chuckled as he moved to the table and pulled out his seat.

To say that Nina is affected by Edward is putting it a bit mildly. Her moods are so closely tied to whatever he happens to be doing when he's around that her self-control only amounts to being able to figure out what to do about the mood rather than having any influence as to what that mood is - which is not the normal state of things for Nina. At the moment she'd have a very hard time being anything besides calm and happy. And when he shows her any sort of affection, thinking becomes... nearly impossible for a little while, to say the least.
Nina gives an amused exhale and smiles at his comment, but is very quick to respond to that with, "I live in the time where a woman is expected to be a man and a woman at the same time. I know how to cook; I just don't have the time very often." Her expression is practically playful as she says this, not offended by his words but also not letting them pass unchallenged.
As he starts out of the kitchen with the food, Nina quietly takes another small sip of her wine. She still remembers all too well the level of pain she sensed in his leg, and at some level it bothers her whenever she's reminded of it. On the other hand, she has to assume that for whatever reason he wants it that way - he knows she can fix it, he knows how she's resolved what previously gave her mixed feelings on the subject, and yet he's never asked even though he's known all that for nearly two weeks. Which naturally leads her to wondering why - why would someone choose that? But given how hard it's been to talk to Edward about his feelings, which she's sure are tied up in that question, she shies away from actually asking.
Instead she uses the wine glass to mask any unfortunate expressions and thinks to herself about how driven he must be to fight through that kind of pain just so that he doesn't have to ask her to help. There's much to admire in that, and she knows better than to negate that by offering her help, as much as she'd like to. She simply waits for him to put everything in place before she brings her own glass of wine to the table and seats herself, though she'll wait for him to start before she will - she's nearly as keen on manners as Edward is. Which is only to be expected, given her earlier justification for her wardrobe: good manners are yet another simple way to make interacting with others go more smoothly.
"You'll never guess what I was reading about when you came in: fluid mechanics," she says, figuring that's a safe subject to bring up. Not that most people would consider fluid mechanics to be all that fascinating, but what's even more interesting than the subject itself is why Nina found it so fascinating.

Edward cut into the chicken and pasta ready to taste on of his amazing masterpieces as Nina spoke. He smirked when she said you’ll never guess. If there was one thing about the Riddler she should realize by now is that guessing is useless because he deduces the answer. However, before he could begin to analysis her position in the encyclopedia she had already given the answer. The puzzle had been ruined, but a new one created.
She was so excited about this simple concept. Obviously it held more meaning to her then to him. He thought over fluid mechanics. It had been awhile since ever studied the concept of the force behind water. The only reason he went into a detailed study of it was because he attempted to kill a person using only the force of water and the man’s own goal to get the key at the bottom of the pool(if you could call it a pool) while water continued to fill the area above him. The pressure would either destroy his internal organs or he would drown. Edward hadn’t cared enough to remember, but that still didn’t solve his riddle. Why did Nina care about fluid mechanics?
She had the ability to manipulate particles, primarily particles within the human body. It looked like from his riddle that actual physical objects were something new for her. Was she trying to expand her knowledge onto the base of liquid or was she focusing on liquid to better help her clients? He knew the reason she was focusing on it had to be in effect to helping someone in the long run.
“I’m assuming your not learning about it to destabilize the pressure within the human body,” he smirked at a method to kill she had at her disposal, as he took a bite of his food. “Is this to help with your research or are you expanding your skills into different fields?”

If Nina had actually expected that Edward would be able to guess what she'd been reading about, then she'd have actually let him. But she'd been reading an encyclopedia, of all things, and not on a subject one would necessarily expect her to be curious about. That, and she really is too genuinely excited to share her thoughts on the subject to spend the time it would take to find out if she was right about that or not. And she knows that the real mystery for Edward to ponder over is to figure out what she might be able to do with a better knowledge on the subject.
She takes a taste of the chicken as he talks, and it's just as well that she has something to do with her mouth other than frown. Must he immediately recognize that she could hurt people with it? But then she quickly has to remind herself that it's only logical to first ask how anything she's learning about applies to medicine, and there really are very few things she could do to apply a knowledge of fluid mechanics to using her gift on a person that wouldn't be rather damaging. In the end she mentally kicks herself for being too hasty about judging Edward's thought process.
Instead she forces herself to address that statement academically - just as theoretical as any talk of how she could hurt someone ought to be treated. "Oh, if I wanted to hurt someone, I can think of much more elegant ways of doing it than that," she comments, "And the human body has so many internal controls for its fluids that it's easier to simply manipulate a few hormones or nerves to get the effect you want rather than trying to do something directly - that's why I hadn't paid much attention to the subject before. Though you never know: sometimes by learning one thing, you figure out another so perhaps it'll help me with my research at some point." She shrugs and pauses to take another bite of food, though between her manner and the fact that she's only half answered the question it's easy to tell she's not quite finished.
"No, what fluid mechanics is teaching me is how I might be able to get the most out of my power outside of the human body," she explains when she's finished chewing that mouthful, "Because while I have my limits when it comes to the size of what I'm manipulating, I haven't yet found a limit to the amount of energy I can apply to it, which means that I have no idea how much force I can generate. Perhaps the only limitation I have with that is what I'm able to perceive." And here she stops, partly so that she can enjoy another bite, and partly so that she can allow Edward to comment.
(OOC: By the way, fluid mechanics applies to gases and plasmas as well as liquids, just FYI.)

Edward smirked against his glass of wine as she told him she could hurt a person in a much more elegant way. While that was true, he had a hard time imagining her ever taking that step. As she continued he was reminded of how powerful and intelligent this woman was. He was slightly surprised that she ever felt any fear of him. She could easily incapacitate him and do what she wished. Though he knew, and he knew she knew, his skills at strategic planning and intellect would prevent her from ever being able to do it. He always found the weakness, and he always used that weakness.
He paused for a moment in his thoughts as he put the glass of wine down.
He didn’t have a plan now…she could hurt him now.
Again his trust issue resurfaced and he fidgeted slightly in his chair making it appear he was only trying to get closer to the table. He concentrated back on her words. Her first few statements were things he already had a basic understanding of so he only nodded as he continued to eat his food. And when she revealed her reason behind reading it, he smirked. So he was right. She was expanding her field of knowledge.
“I’ve never been one to insult an expansion of knowledge, but I'm curious why you are doing it. You do realize that anything you can control externally has more use in causing pain then helping others. I understood why you strengthened your power within the body because it helps you heal people, but externally…” he paused his mind automatically going through all the ways such a power could hurt someone, “I’m assuming your learning this for protection, or is this just in the curiosity of your own limits?”
He came to a conclusion long ago that Nina was afraid of her power. She was afraid of having so much power within her control, and the probability that she might end up using the power for something she deemed horrible. With that fear, he didn’t understand why she would open up many more doors that could lead her down that path. Again, he had no problem with her accomplishing this or strengthening her power. He silently hoped she would go through one of those doors and realize her moral obligations were merely a façade, but he knew it would hurt her mentally…that thought made him feel slightly uncomfortable.

The ultimate flaw in Nina using her power to fight anyone is her unwillingness to kill anyone with it, or to even cause them permanent harm intentionally. And that's a flaw because anyone with the intelligence and the drive to kill her would therefore have multiple chances to try - multiple opportunities to learn the exact right way to go about it. Which is why she knew to fear Edward from the moment that she realized who he was, and why she was reluctant to do anything to him with her power even before her emotions became very involved.
But she's also very aware of just how powerful she is - painfully so. If she ever once decided that she would like to kill someone, as long as she knew where they were it would take her a mere three seconds. And no amount of metal shielding, concrete, bulletproofing, or anything else that she's ever encountered has gotten in the way of her mind. And knowing that is more than a little bit scary to her.
However, she's known all of this for many years; as she said, one doesn't need a solid understanding of fluid mechanics to know how to kill or hurt someone with her power. Bit by bit she's grown to trust herself to use her gift wisely: only that portion of it that's more helpful than hurtful. And now that she sees a greater need to be able to protect herself, learning how to do more with her gift seems like a much better idea than it used to be.
So as she listens to Edward's comments, she actually smirks slightly in between bites. "Anything I can control internally has more 'use' in causing pain than helping anyone. Basic rule of the universe: it's nearly always easier to break something than it is to fix it," she points out when he's finished, "Learning these things simply gives me more tools to work with, and all tools have their harmful and helpful uses. The initial reason I wanted to start looking into this sort of thing was for protection - not everything dangerous is organic, after all - though I must admit that the more I learn, the more curious I've become about a few things..."
Here she pauses thoughtfully as she picks up her wine glass. "For example: if something the size of a small grain of sand moves at supersonic speed, can you hear the shock wave, or is it too small?" she asks before taking a small sip. She certainly doesn't know the answer to that one. And apparently Nina isn't very afraid of opening a lot of doors - she's certain she's made wise choices about which doors to go through and which ones to avoid, and with both her desire to protect herself and the interest she's developing in some of the subjects she's been learning about she's not afraid to make those choices again.

When Edward hears a question he automatically feels the need to answer it, and not just answer but go into a detail explanation proving exactly how intelligent he really was. So of course when the question left her lips he doesn’t pay attention to the possible meaning behind her question but instead gave a cocky smirk. “Well since shock waves are created by the a series of pressure waves that travel at the speed of sound and are being compressed because the object itself is traveling faster then it, the size of the object has nothing to do with the shock wave. The mathematical equation is actually sin of the angle equals the velocity of sound divided by the velocity of the object. Weight, size, and mass are not aspects involving it. So to answer your question, yes you can still hear the shock waves,” he said with that smug look almost feeling tempted to do what he does to others he outsmarted.
Pat them on the head and tell them ‘You’ll get it someday.'
But he didn’t because he knew the only reason Nina didn’t know the answer wasn’t because she lacked the ability to learn it, but rather she hadn’t studied everything in the world like he had. After his speech he paused realizing that she hadn’t asked the question for an answer, but was instead proving a point to him. She had a similar curiosity for knowledge as he did. He couldn’t say that fact surprised him. He did like having her presence around, and for him to not be annoyed by someone meant they were somewhat intelligent, and for a person to be somewhat intelligent they had to have some curiosity for knowledge.
Edward took another bite of his delicious dinner. He rarely ever cooked, but when he did, he never disappointed himself. The Penguin’s chiefs should take lessons from him. He looked back at Nina. He wondered why she was telling him all this. Why would she inform him of her increasing power? Giving him more information on a subject allowed for him to easily determine the flaws with in that system. She was making herself more vulnerable….or maybe it was a threat….an underline threat explaining how powerful she was.
No, you’re over analyzing Nigma.
The most logical answer that Edward couldn’t come to was that Nina just wanted to talk to him, but Edward had never been in a possession where anyone just wanted to talk. There was a reason behind every conversation whether it was the simplest of reasons like the person likes the sound of their own voice or the most complex like a plot that required the manipulation of the person. People always had a reason. How was Edward missing this reason? It was a riddle. A small frown formed on his face, but he covered it by taking another bite then saying, “But yes that’s quite smart of you. I shouldn’t expect any less.”
(OOC: I'm not positive if the shock wave thing is true, but we're going to pretend it is because he's the Riddler he would know the answer even though i don't. But I think it's right.)

Was Nina expecting Edward to know the answer or wasn't she? Honestly, she hadn't been sure - while she's aware that Edward must be well-versed in a wide variety of subjects, it'd be impossible for anyone to know everything about everything so it would more boil down to just how important or not he thought that the subject was. And having an understanding of shock waves was one of those subjects that seemed like it could be hit or miss. What she did know was that if Edward knew he would explain it even though it was rhetorical in addition to being something she was genuinely interested in, and she smiles when he does.
She listens carefully and thoughtfully, putting down the wine and taking a few bites more of pasta and chicken as she listens and mulls the matter over, nodding to his words when he's finished. "That's what I thought," she says finally, "But even if the size of the object doesn't change the shock wave that's produced, it must have some effect on the sound produced or a supersonic jet would make exactly the same sound as a bullwhip. And I've often run into trouble with such equations being applied to what I do because the standard rules don't always apply to objects so small. And I doubt that anyone thought that they'd be applying that equation to an object that small because the friction at that scale would be... enormous." She frowns a little as she considers the logistics of what she'd be doing if she were to test it, but continues with, "It's probably too difficult to test using normal methods, but I think I could manage it. Unless whatever I'm moving can't take the strain and crumbles to pieces... But if it can be done, I'm sure it would make a sound." And it's easy enough to see that Nina would really, really like to try it out sometime.
And as if sensing her own reaction to that she grins and comments, "I think I may have a new hobby - that's just one thing I'm curious about. Which means I probably need to find a physicist I can trust so that if I find out anything really interesting it can be properly documented - even if it's labeled theoretical." Because finding things like that out simply for herself would seem like a waste to Nina if it wasn't shared properly. Especially if it ends up cutting into her medical research time - properly documented, the things she might end up discovering could end up advancing technology and that's usually a boon to humanity too.
"Of course, if I can make a sound, the question becomes: 'What can I do with that?'" she adds with another grin, "Using my gift always requires so much creativity." Because of the nature of her gift, she's both extremely powerful and extremely restricted in what she's able to do. She's almost never able to just do something, she has to be able to figure out how to do it with what she knows.
And she can't help but smile at his comment on her intelligence. Nina knows just how smart she is in the grand scheme of things, and she's so secure in that knowledge that anyone who cares to tell her it's either more or less than it is would find their praise or insults highly ineffective. And she's not so arrogant about her own intelligence to necessarily feel that it has to be recognized. But on the other hand, hearing Edward actually say so really means something - for more than one reason.

Edward listened carefully only somewhat interested in what she said. He didn’t quite understand why, but Nina felt the need to question every one of his statements. He was very unfamiliar to someone not believing him or his words. Okay, not completely unfamiliar. Batman liked to challenge his statements all the time as well, but nonetheless Batman kept his mouth shut. Strong and silent type was the best way to describe that man.
Edward forked his chicken a bit harder then he meant to. He wasn’t only getting annoyed with the fact that she was attempting to find flaws in his statements, but that she was talking to him about something so tedious. Why did he particularly care about shock waves especially at this moment? The only reason he had studied it before was when he was tempted to see if it was possible to kill a person with such a pressurized wave. The only thing he concluded from it was that Nina found the topic interesting and that was the reason they were talking about it.
It wasn’t until he painfully swallowed his next bite and she continued into her other statement did he finally realize the reason behind this conversation. The point of this conversation was to talk about her. How many times had she said I from the moment he stepped in? 106. Now compare that to how many times he said I, 26. Having an obsession and a memory of counting things allowed analyzing aspects like this very easy.
106 times.
This entire conversation was about her.
While he understood that to her having a relationship meant sharing one’s life with another, the Riddler found this very irritating. He had not once brought up his work out of respect for her, yet she felt the need to not only bring up her research but also brag. Edward’s jaw tightened just a bit. Nina was a hypocrite. She was probably one of the most arrogant people he had met in his life, second to him of course, yet she still tried to act as if she were humble because all she cares about is the research getting out there not the name recognition. Did she not realize that the amount of pride in her work equated to arrogance whether she wanted name recognition or not? Normally, he wouldn’t have a problem with a person, who is obviously smart, showing and bragging about her works and her plans, but Edward felt tangled. He had never talked this much about someone else, unless it was the Batman. Edward always found a way to bring the conversation back to him. He was the most entertaining thing anyone could talk about. He was doing everyone a favor, yet he couldn’t turn the conversation his way. Nina didn’t want to hear about his work. She didn’t want to participate in it because she couldn’t accept that factor of him. She couldn’t accept him.
Did she even know who he was?
No.
When had she ever asked about his life in any form?
Never.
And if she even saw anything dealing with his life she would give that judgmental look. She didn’t love him. He didn’t even know if she liked him, or if she only liked him because he listened to her. Any buffoon could listen and nod, and the Riddler was no buffoon. He was a genius.
He put down his fork and pulled out his phone. It was more to do some mundane task then to actually accomplish anything useful. He took in the time. He had barely gotten home, but in all honesty, he was ready to leave.
“Yes, a lot of things require creativity…like macaroni art. Skill, on the other hand, is something much different,” he stood up, putting his napkin on the table. He held his phone in his hand clicking through to contact Allen. He needed to get away from the hypocrisy. He needed to think by himself, but he also did not want to see Nina’s face as he left. He didn’t believe he could handle it, if he noticed any pain. “I apologize I must get going,” he stated, heading to the bar counter where his hat sat. He didn’t inform her why or where he was going because he knew she didn’t care. She didn’t care about his life. She really only cared about her own life.

It isn't until Edward pulls out his phone that Nina really notices anything is wrong. As far as she was concerned, they'd been having a pleasant conversation - whatever subtle signs of disinterest that Edward had been missed among her own genuine interest in the subject. And besides that she's so used to his quick and judgmental statements about everyone that a part of her assumes that if he had any to say about her then he wouldn't hesitate to say them.
But something's wrong - until that moment he hadn't seemed to have been in any hurry, and the way he avoids looking at her tells her that it has something to do with her an not because his phone told him of something needing his attention. The question is: what is the problem? And here she has to draw a complete blank. Edward doesn't talk to her about his problems, whether they relate to her or not. And that means that much of his thought process is a complete mystery to her - which is in itself a problem.
But though she recognizes that as a problem she's also very hesitant to probe into anything he doesn't seem interested in bringing up himself; he hasn't really brought up anything about his life or his work even though there's surely plenty of it that wouldn't be at all upsetting to talk about, so she has to assume that he doesn't want to talk about it. And that seems like a subject that's a potential minefield anyway - one that she's reluctant to enter by herself without having a sense of which parts of it are safe, which she can't get while they both avoid the subject entirely. And it would never occur to her that he's only been avoiding talking about it himself because he's doesn't want to hurt her - she's very, very hard to really hurt, after all, especially by accident. And Edward knows that... doesn't he?
And Nina isn't hurt now. Why would she be? Edward's only lashing out a little at her over something that's bothering him that he doesn't want to talk to her about. Which isn't something she can find fault with herself about - if he doesn't want to talk about whatever is bothering him, then she can't be expected to figure out what's wrong, let alone fix it. She's not a mind reader, after all.
Of course, just because she's not hurt doesn't mean that she's not bothered. Who wouldn't be bothered by the man that they love abruptly feeling the need to leave during dinner over some unknown problem he doesn't want talk about? But she doesn't try to stop him. In fact, she says nothing at all to his transparent words. Instead she puts her fork down and becomes passive as she tries to work out what to do. Her mouth opens once or twice as words die before they're spoken, but eventually she quietly says, "I'm sorry." Since she doesn't know what's wrong she can't be sure what she's apologizing for, but she does know that if she did anything that would make Edward feel the need to leave then she's sorry that she did it, no matter what it was.

Edward grabbed his hat putting it on his head just as the two words were whispered out into the apartment. He felt a painful cringe around his heart that he now knew was caused by this new emotion called guilt. He frowned in annoyance before turning back and seeing her face. She didn’t seem painfully hurt by him leaving, but he noticed the confusion. She obviously was oblivious to what she did wrong. Even though she didn’t really do anything wrong, she was just being herself and that was the problem. He couldn’t tell her that he had figured her out and just like all women she had immense flaws. The perfect example was that women had an excessive need to talk about themselves.
He took in her expression for a few more moments. She didn’t know why she was apologizing so how could Edward be expected to accept it. He wanted to pinch the bridge of his nose in annoyance or take out another candy, but he only looked down at his cane. He didn’t want to talk about this with Nina. She couldn't fix who she was. He either had to come to terms with the fact that she was a hypocrite who was naively confusing her feelings with him for love and continue to be with her….or not. Yes, there were moments where Nina fascinated him, but how could that fascination outweigh her disgust of him. He never felt like he did anything wrong. He did everything right. He never made mistakes…yet with Nina…she made him feel like a bad person. The pain of guilt only strengthened that argument, and Edward was not a bad person. Not at all.
“You can’t apologize for being you, Nina,” he said softly adjusting his hat so it shadowed his eyes. “Good night,” he said finally as he headed to the door. He would not let her make him feel like this. Everything he did was right…especially when she was just like him…she was just as arrogant…and just as work driven….but for some reason he was the bad person. The person who sacrificed who he was, was the bad person! The person who purposefully avoided topics he loved because of her was the bad person! No. He opened up the door to his apartment and slammed it behind him. This wasn’t worth it.
No. No.
He just needed to think it through…and what better way to do that then studying stolen toxin.

Sitting there unmoving, Nina's only reaction to his parting words is to close her eyes until the slamming of the door signaled his departure. It's only then that she opens her eyes, stares vacantly at the partly eaten plates of food, and lets herself feel whatever it is that she feels now that she's alone.
And that feeling is largely one of frustration: He's blaming her for this? When he's unwilling to talk to her about whatever it is? How is that even remotely fair? And though she has a hard time believing that she really does have some inherent flaw that's causing Edward to react this way (she may not be perfect, but she's unaware of any personal failings that are that big), the comment does bother her a lot because it means that he sees whatever the problem is as something unsolvable.
Is it possible that he's right? Is whatever he's hiding some evidence that they're just too different? No! Her mind immediately thrusts that thought away - it simply can't be true. If there's a problem between the two of them, then there will be a solution. Because if not... She quickly fights off a small wave of panic that threatens with a deep breath... Whatever the problem is, there will be a way to solve it. And now she knows that there is one, so this is a good thing.
Sighing to herself, she stands and starts to clear off the table. She has no appetite anymore, no matter how good the food is, but it will end up in the fridge so that it doesn't go to waste. And the work of cleaning up is settling to the nerves. But the problem that she starts to mull over in her mind is what she should do about this. Which is a very hard question for her to answer; she knows that Edward's feelings for her are more than a little bit difficult for him to come to grips with. And that's something she can be perfectly understanding about - that's why she's never been bothered about giving him as much space as he seems to need.
But perhaps this is a sign that she needs to do something else? Here she's uncertain: it could be that he simply needs even more time, and will be more willing to talk about it later if she gives it to him. Or it may be that she needs to step in and demand to know what's on his mind whether he wants to talk about it or not. But the latter is a scary idea - she'd told Edward that she wasn't afraid of him anymore, but she'd only meant generally speaking. She can trust that he won't hurt her as long as she doesn't do anything to really provoke him: something she's not inclined to do anyway. Would being more forceful provoke him? She doesn't know, and because she doesn't know she feels the need to take the more conservative option as long as it's available.
But she doesn't like it, not even a little bit. Choosing to do nothing when she's so certain it would be more effective to do something else makes her feel so helpless. She does not like having her options so limited, especially for that reason.
