The thanks offered by Batgirl only gets and acknowledging "Mmm" as she finishes depositing the rest of the supplies back into the first aid kit, and quickly washes her own hands at the sink behind the counter. She didn't do it for the thanks, though for once she had a slightly better reason for helping than simply forever having the good opinion of one more person - which is her usual reasoning. Actually a large part of her is certain the effort is futile: she's lived in East Gotham for a very, very long time and has watched it sink lower and lower. She's seen the police try time and again to fix the downward slide with little results, and the larger part of Margaret is sure that it will just keep on getting worse. But maybe, just maybe, the vigilantes will be able to have some success where the proper authorities failed. Something she sees as an extremely long shot, but she might as well give that shot a small boost when it doesn't hurt.
And, having concluded that particular good deed, she walks over to John and considers his questions. She frowns slightly and immediately responds, "I don't know why you'd think I'd know anything about that sort of thing." Which is only to be expected because there are other customers around.
Then again, if anyone knows how to say something without really saying anything, it's Margaret. And while she's uncertain about John's place in things, she does has enough of a sense of him to know that he'll probably do good things with whatever she tells him, so she quickly sorts through what she knows and pulls out what little she feels that she's able to actually say. That takes her only a few moments, and so does figuring out how to convey that information as discreetly as possible.
"If it's a story you want, how about the three little monkeys? The first one covered his ears and heard no evil. The second one covered his eyes and saw no evil. And the last one covered his mouth and spoke no evil. That's the only story I have tonight, but let me get ya your mocha," she says easily, having no problem remembering John's regular order. It's an odd story that makes it seem like she's explaining that she's not about to say a thing. Though a clever person might notice that the last part of that story about not saying anything is a definite lie, which would cast doubt on the rest of the story. And they'd notice that she'd switched the order of the first two monkeys. And Margaret figures that if anyone is ambitious enough to be asking about Blackgate and the Riddler, they ought to be able to figure out what she just said or give up now.
Heading back behind the counter to start making John's drink, Margaret is unaware of the commotion that starts up behind her cafe until she hears the loud sound coming from the back. She grimaces, but will do nothing about it. She's already given Batgirl as much help as she can tonight: even if she was willing to get involved in a fight, it's not like she's actually able to do anything in one.
(OOC: Translation of what Margaret said if you don't get it: She's saying that she's heard rumors about Blackgate and has seen the Riddler, but is unwilling to say anything else. Still, that ought to be helpful since it tells you you're in the right area for both. )
