Chuckling at that, Shayera comments, "I'd rather someone ask than have them think that they couldn't and then find out later that they assumed something completely wrong." Especially the question of whether or not she has any difficulty being intimate - she really doesn't want anyone thinking that. Definitely not that!
When he speaks of smoking outside, she nods and says, "Oh, I'll join you then - I love it out there. Actually, you probably want me to get the latch - it can be temperamental. Though the wind shouldn't be a problem right now." She's not fussy about smoke - it doesn't really affect her one way or the other. Though she does suppose she'd prefer it if her things didn't smell of smoke, so she'd rather he didn't smoke in her apartment. As she warned, the latch has a tendency to stick - it's worn and rusty, and only gives in with a loud creak. "Maybe now that I have the elevator under control, I should work on the door..." she comments as she steps outside.
Though there's a definite breeze blowing, as she predicted it isn't very strong. Which is a good thing, since the ledge on the other side of the door that encircles the building at this level is only about three feet wide and doesn't have a railing. It's plenty of room if you're not afraid of heights, so Shayera handles it easily. After all, if she fell, then wings - she'd be back on the ledge within seconds (though it would be rather embarrassing, given the sheer number of times she's been on even more precarious perches). For similar reason, she's not worried about Harvey at all - of course she'd catch him if the worst happened.
So instead of the ledge, she's looking at the view. In spite of the city's problems, the lights from up here - one of the tallest buildings in this part of the city - is spectacular. To the west is the center of the city and its many tall buildings, and between and beyond them are smaller ones - all trailing off into the distance as far as the eye can see uninterrupted except by the rivers that break the city into its sectors. It's late enough that most of the windows of the buildings are a checkerboard of lights and blackness, depending on if the occupant is present and awake or not, while the streets below ebb and flow with the lights of the cars making their way through the city streets. A few spotlights reach high into the sky, trying to draw attention to this or that, though none bear the image of a bat - it's hard to say whether that's more troubling or comforting.

Harvey sighed at the view. Half out of fatigue, half out of love.
"Hey, old girl, be a classy dame tonight, alright?" He asked the skyline with great sincerity to grant his wish.
Harvey let a relaxed chuckle roll from him briefly before he quieted down to light his cigarette. He blocked the wind with his bad should. Flame was struck and touched the end of the Turkish Royal. He inhaled and caught the end aflame, the cherry burning bright orange and red.
Smoke billowed from his nostrils.
"Not a bad looking night, eh? Let's hope she keeps her aces up that sleeve and don't pull 'em out. It's so sweet of her when she does. I appreciate it tremendously."
He returned the cigarette to his lips letting it dangle while he put his good hand in his pocket.

As Shayera takes in the view herself, she looks rather birdlike for several moments in the way her head turns to scan the bit of city she can see and hear from here. It's late enough that her eyesight is failing her - she's not blind at night, but her night vision isn't much better than a human's so it's far less acute in the dark than it is in the light. At times like this her hearing becomes far more important, though after a few moments of quiet she gives a satisfied nod to herself and says, "All's quiet in the immediate neighborhood." And as much as she likes fighting crime, right now she'll count it as a good thing. If she did hear a crime in progress right now she'd have to go take care of it now simply because you don't just ignore that sort of thing, but she's not really in the mood for that - not when she has a guest.
Lifting her attention from the streets directly below to the buildings stretched out before them, she says, "The view is definitely the best part of the place." A pause, and then she asks, "You really like Gotham, don't you?" Which is something she finds interesting, actually. It's not the most pleasant city in the world, and though she has her own set of reasons to like it, she wouldn't regard it as a place you can like without that saying something about you.

"Are you kiddin'? She's like any other woman, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. She's kind of a cranky girl, but she can be sweet sometimes, but watch out for that temper of hers, yeesh."
Harvey shook his head and continued to puff on his cigarette, watching everything idly and without much thought to keeping that observant eye of his on things below. Eventually he turned to her a little.
"What about you? You like it here or would you rather be somewhere else?"
Harvey could never imagine living anywhere else, though at one point in his life he had indeed lived somewhere else. He lived in Shelby, Virginia while working for the Agency. Even when that was going on he'd lay awake some nights just thinking about home, missing it. He'd kept his apartment while away even when his boss and coworkers would give him shit over it. He didn't care, Gotham was always home and he'd never leave it for good.
Though, soon, he would have to leave for a little while, but that was another story.

Shayera can't help but smirk at Harvey's comparison of the city to a woman. "Well, that's all right - I have a pretty powerful temper myself..." she comments. Which is putting it mildly, actually - her temper is legendary. Not just on Earth, but also on Thanagar, though it was considered less remarkable among her own people simply because that's a more common trait. About all she can say for herself is that she has it under control - she's really not very good at stopping herself from getting upset, but when she's upset she's extremely good at not doing anything she'll regret later.
The question he asks prompts a long pause - that's one that she actually has to think over first. She came to Gotham because she had to - whether or not she likes to be here is not a factor she'd considered. "Like any place, there's parts I like and parts I don't, I suppose," she answers with a slight shrug, "Compared to a lot of places I've been it's actually a bit boring. But then again, at the moment there's not really any more interesting places for me to go, and that's my fault." She shrugs again, since there's no real point in finding fault with a city for being what it is.
Her gaze shifts from the city to the stars as she adds, "As for where I'd rather be... It probably doesn't exist anymore. And I wouldn't be welcome there even if it does." She sighs somewhat wearily at that, but doesn't seem to be too bothered by that - she's had a rather long time to come to accept it, after all.

Harvey gave her a nod.
"It's like Dorothy said ' no place like home.' Anyway... I should go, I don't want to keep you from whatever you were up to before I got here. I only overstay my welcome when I'm on the clock."
Harvey finished his cigarette, snugged his coat and got his hat in his head more securely. He looked around for a moment and then to his busted arm and back to Shayera.
"There an easier way out of here. Ladders are a bitch when your arm's in a cast and sling, Shay."

"Who?" Shayera asks fairly quickly, as she doesn't get the Dorothy reference even though she can instantly understand the sentiment. She knows that what she really should be doing with that feeling is coming to accept the idea that her old home is lost to her and that she needs to find a new one. But that... well, it's a process and she's nowhere near done with it.
Shrugging a little, she comments, "I was just working on my paying job." Though from how she talks about it, it isn't anything very pressing. But she can't help but grin at the idea of him purposely staying somewhere too long while he's working.
When he asks about an alternative way down she hesitates just a moment before offering up her suggestion, as she remembers his reaction to the first time she flew with him, but he does have a point about his arm - and she's guessing it would be even harder to go down than it was to go up the ladder. "I could always fly you down - that would be no trouble," she offers, because it really wouldn't.

Harvey looked down over the ledge and then back to her. He sighed with a slight growl in the back of his throat.
"Alright, fine."
Harvey wasn't frightened by it, it just jarring to him. Like when you end up running into someone and neither of you expect it. Bam, it happens and papers go flying everywhere.
"Just be gentle, I ain't used to this sort of thing and I'm getting too old for all this shit as it is."
Shayera would naturally outlive him and probably still look twenty/thirty something by the time a guy like him was old, gray, and walking around with a damn cane. He made sure he had everything he needed before giving her a nod to indicate he was ready. He tried to relax instead of brace himself by tensing up and getting prematurely annoyed by flight.

Looking idly over the ledge when he does, Shayera manages to suppress a grin at his reluctance. Flying is hardly jarring to her - in fact, for her it ranges from being a perfectly ordinary way to move to absolutely exhilarating depending on exactly what she's up to at the time. Either way, always a positive more than a negative - well, except when she manages to get tired enough that she'd rather not move anywhere at all in any fashion.
When he speaks of being too old for it, then she can't suppress her amusement. "You're not that old," she protests lightly but sincerely. She may look quite a bit younger than him, but in actual years he's still a young buck compared to her. But she's gotten so used to dealing with ages that don't quite match up that age has become just a number to her, all joking aside. What really matters is whatever that cliche is about how old you feel. No, she's unlikely to fall for some really old man she just met, so age does matter somewhat, but then again if she'd known him since he was younger... Well, that's a different story.
Though she can see that he's ready to go, she isn't quite ready to take him - something she explains by commenting, "Since we'd have an audience down there, it's probably better if we say goodbye up here before I take you down." While there's not exactly enough people to form a crowd down there at this time of night, there's enough that she wouldn't want to linger for too long and she doesn't want to force out a hasty goodbye either.
Especially since she figures that a quick 'see ya later' would be inadequate. She may not be very well versed in all the subtleties of how humans go about things, but she does know enough that a visit that begins with flowers shouldn't end like that. What's harder to figure out is how it supposed to end, then. Because she knows flowers are supposed to be some sort of sign of affection... but then again, since one can give one's friends and relatives flowers, it can mean affection of different kinds... aren't there supposed to be certain flowers with specific meanings or something? If so, knowing that doesn't help her because she can't remember any of the specifics about that. So it's fair to say that she's not totally clear on how to interpret Harvey's entire visit today. After all, other than the flowers it only consisted of them making a bunch of mostly inconsequential small-talk.
On the other hand, one thing that she's not totally unclear about is herself and her own thoughts and feelings. "I wanted to thank you for coming to visit, even if it was just for a bit. And climbing that ladder to do it - you have no idea how much I appreciate it. It's easy to feel all alone up here, and easy to pretend that I'm tough enough that I don't care - but I do. Being able to just shoot the breeze with someone in my own home is so refreshing," she says a bit quietly, but very sincere in her words. Her smile suddenly becomes much larger than usual as she adds, "And you brought me flowers."
Hesitating for a moment, she steps forward just enough to plant an extremely soft kiss on his cheek. Which is immediately flowed by a very self-conscious half-step backward. Sighing heavily to herself in dissatisfaction, she's unable to look at him as she says, "Sorry - I'm... out of practice."

Harvey watched her as she spoke and gave a nod to her thanks of him coming all the way up here. Seriously, get an elevator for people with busted limbs. All his perpetual grumping around and intricate facade aside he was happy he could do something nice every now and then, even if it did pain him to do so.
And then kiss on the cheek. Harvey was a bit surprised, but not completely. It was a common gesture, though he didn't recieve it all that much, it was common. The surprise mostly came from a woman actually displaying that gesture without mistaking him for someone else. He was known for being gruff, not soft.
He looked at her a bit confused when she apologized. Practice? Oh.. practice.
"Don't be sorry, um. So are you trying to figure out a way to say you want to go on a date or something like that?"
Harvey may have been completely off, but if she apparently had been out of practice and she was still trying to figure out humans and their ways, then it was a good place to start. Otherwise he was fine, he didn't put any hearts on his sleeves.

The question that Harvey asks causes Shayera to look over at him with a look of surprise. "No. I mean, yes!" she starts, then frowns to herself at just how badly she's flubbing this up. She really should be doing better - it's not like she's never been through this before. With a human, even, and she doesn't recall talking to John as ever being this tricky.
Then again, it could be a matter of how it happened - John had been a well-known, respected teammate and the transition from that to a romantic relationship had been nearly instant when they'd both realized that they'd been unknowingly growing closer over a significant period of time. They'd skipped all of this in-between 'I like you but I'm not completely sure how much and wonder if there's any chance that you feel the same way' business entirely. And the Thanagarian equivalent is much, much simpler. So maybe she really hasn't done this before.
Taking a breath to clear her head, she reminds herself that she's too old to not be able to handle this sort of thing with a certain amount of calm. "Let me restart. Where I come from we kissed, but I didn't have to worry about kissing someone too hard," she starts to explain, sounding rather calm as she does so, which is a feat given the subject matter of what she's saying, "It's... harder here. I had it more or less mastered once, but that was long enough ago I was worried. And I didn't want to hurt you, so I decided to make sure I was gentle. But then after I realized that a kiss like that means less than what I meant it to mean."
Pausing for a moment to choose her words carefully, she adds, "I wanted to give you one that means 'If you ask me out I'll say yes, and if you don't I'll be disappointed.'" So she'd wanted to communicate something a little bit more than what he asked about - such a kiss exists, and she'd wanted to give it to him, but it's a bit more substantial and if she'd messed it up... But now it's seems that she's messed up anyway, though she suspects that Harvey will at least be understanding. What he'll make of it is another question but, though she wouldn't be saying any of this if she didn't care quite a bit about the outcome, she's experienced more than enough love and loss in her life to not be too hurt if he's just not interested.

Harvey wrinkled his face at all she said for a moment after she was done speaking. He relaxed his expression and looked at her with absolute neutrality. Finally a hint of a smirk cracked.
"Look, I wouldn't mind rufflin' your feathers, but I have a requirement."
Harvey stepped to her and looked on her, inhaling a slight longer than he had been doing before. He let it out and gave her an astute nod.
"You think too much sometimes. Trust your instincts, stop worrying so much about how you are perceived, own who you are, and do not hold back - I ain't nothin' delicate. Be Shayera of Thanagaria, alright?"
After a pause Harvey looked back to the world below and then to her.
"My hours are weird. You doin' anything Thursday night at 2:30ish in the morning?"

Watching his expressions carefully, Shayera finds herself having to wade through a couple that make her worry that she'd made a false step, only for his facade to suddenly crack and show her that she'd been right about him. She can't help but smirk back herself, hers laced with a hint of relief. Which is traded quickly for a look of curiosity as he mentions a requirement.
And as he names it, the curiosity becomes surprise and then a laugh. "You're right - I've not been being myself," she admits with a nod, frowning slightly as she adds, "When shit happens, it shakes you." Which is putting it a bit mildly, but then again what she's referring to is not some insignificant happening.
Forcing her mind away from that track - it's way too easy for her to get lost in it - she rather abruptly assumes a rather grave expression as she folds her arms across her chest. "So, you think you can handle Shayera of Thanagar?" she asks, "You just remember that you asked for her." Having said that, she smiles - in fact, she's suddenly finding herself much more relaxed at this moment than she has been since she knew it was Harvey at the door.
His suggestion of a time causes her to pause for thought for a moment, but then she simply says, "Nothing important." Not important enough that she wouldn't happily skip it for a date with Harvey, anyway.

"Alright. Great. We're set then."
Harvey smirked, nodded, and seemed a little surprised over all. He stood there a moment and finally looked back over to her.
"I hate to cut and run, but I gotta get home. You mind giving me that lift down the street?"
Once he was back on the ground again he gave her a simple wave and smile as he walked over to his car.
"I'll see you Thursday night, or Friday morning. Whatever you wanna call it."

Truth be told, Shayera's a little surprised over it all herself. Of course she knew that she wanted to say what she did already, but it didn't go how she'd hoped it would and yet here she is on the other end of it with a date to show for it. But she simply smiles and nods, not one to be too flustered for too long in any event, especially since it did turn out well.
When he reminds her that she was going to give him a lift down to street level, she immediately says, "Oh, of course!" Taking his uninjured arm, she lays it across her shoulders and holds it firmly in place with one hand, while the other arm wraps around his waist to hold him against her side. It would actually be much more comfortable for them both if she simply scooped him up in her arms like a baby, but it's been her experience that grown human men tend to object to that.
"Hold on," she says as she jumps with him off the ledge. Since they're headed straight down, she doesn't really fly to the ground as much as she uses her wings to slow their fall - a bit like a parachute - making an effort to keep it slow so that she doesn't make him sick. She's still faster than your standard elevator though, so it isn't long before she's gently landing them both on the ground.
The area's locals are pretty much used to the idea that Hawkgirl lives somewhere near the top of that particular building but, as Shayera anticipated, they still pause to gawk at seeing her on ground level and up close. But she ignores them, pausing on the ground just long enough to make sure that Harvey has his feet firmly under him and then throwing him another smile as she says, "I'll see you then!" And with that, she's gone in a gust of wind, throwing herself back up into the inky black sky of Gotham at night.
