(OOC Note: This thread is Open to any character who hasn't met Nina yet. All others please ask me before joining.)
"Remind me why you brought me here?" Nina asks as she follows her assistant into one of the nearly three hundred Starbucks located within Gotham.
"Because I want coffee," Shawty replies matter-of-factly. Which shouldn't surprise anyone since anyone who really knows Shawty suspects that all 4'9" runs on coffee.
"Then why did I need to come with you?" Nina asks, sighing as they get into line, "I don't like coffee."
"Because you needed a change of scenery. And they have more than coffee," Shawty replies quickly. Though how anyone could possibly not like coffee is beyond her.
Nina sighs quietly to herself, unable to argue with that logic. Or at least, not able to come up with an argument that her assistant would accept. So she somewhat reluctantly scans the menu's non-coffee options. Whenever Shawty insists that they're going somewhere and refuses to tell her where exactly, it always ends up being somewhere that she won't be completely pleased with. But she does, somewhat reluctantly, admit that she needs a break and should go somewhere where it's actually possible for her to see people besides Shawty. Even if her assistant is the only one she's planning on actually interacting with.
Shawty, on the other hand, doesn't need to look at the menu - she's been here often enough that she already knows exactly what she wants. So instead she idly scans the crowd of patrons for anything suspicious. As it's mid-afternoon there's a good number of them waiting in line and scattered at the various tables. Not that she really expects trouble here since nobody they know ought to have any idea that either of them are here, but you never know. Dr. Stenet seems to attract trouble to her like a magnet.

"Get back here you little brat!"
At the back of the café, a little blonde girl sprinted out the back entrance with one of the high-up employees behind chasing after her. Now why was Roxie snooping around at the back of a Starbucks? Easy, they have good sweets. However, Roxanne is still bad at stealing things that aren't on a person so today her hunt for food back-fired when the employee saw her snatching up some cookies. Turning a corner, Roxanne almost stumbled over a pair of trashcans while ducking the employee who tripped into the cans.
Roxanne kept running to try and spread distance from the employee, thinking it was a bad idea to try and steal food during rush hour. But it wasn't her fault! She was hungry. Roxanne was just a simple street-rat who only wanted something good to eat. But none of the Gothamites ever give a crap about any of the East End residents. Just see and treat them like a plague of rats in a pure heartfelt community....Yeah right! To Roxanne, the middle and rich classes are a bunch of greedy lazy sloths that laid-back in their expensive leather chairs and riding in their pimped up limos. All of them disgust her.
Taking a chance to look behind her, Roxanne turned her head to see if the Starbucks worker was still chasing her, only to bump right into a businessman who was just exiting the establishment. The impact caused the man's cup of coffee to spill on his expensive silk suit and for Roxanne to land backwards onto the sidewalk below. The business man looked at his stained suit and to Roxanne with an upmost furious expression. "Why you little rat!" The man yelled as he lifted his hand up to backhand Roxanne. She can defend herself but with all the witnesses around its best to act like a defensive little poor homeless girl, makes the rich guy look like the bad guy. So Roxanne just clench her eyes close and wait for the sting.

As Shawty was already looking around, she's very quick to spot the young girl darting around the corner and the run-in with the businessman by the door. She's also very quick in general, so it only takes her an instant to decide what she needs to do and to leave Dr. Stenet's side. Rushing behind the man, she grabs his upraised arm only to twist it behind him just enough to hurt, and just as quickly she shoves past him and wraps her arms around the girl as if to protect her.
But Roxanne would feel something slightly different from what it looks like - as Shawty wraps her arms around the girl, who is actually two inches taller than she is even though Shawty is a grown adult and the girl appears to be quite young, she also grabs Roxanne's wrists in a very firm grip. You see, though Shawty appears to be as upper middle class as they come, from her blonde hair that's been carefully sculpted into delicate ripples with an assortment of styling tools and hair products to her charcoal-colored suede Sorel boots, she's not the sort of assistant whose duties stop at picking up Dr. Stenet's dry-cleaning, filing paperwork, and managing the schedule. She's also, despite all appearances, charged with assisting with her boss's personal protection - she's a bodyguard. And quite skilled at it too.
You see, Shawty was born in east Gotham. She was never homeless, technically, but she'd have been the first person to tell you that a home like hers wasn't much better than none. Having grown up in poverty, she learned more than a few things from it - how to fight, how to protect others, how to use a gun. In fact, she was a little younger than the girl she's holding when she first joined a gang of teenage girls. A few years after that, she was leading the gang. But she'd also gone to school, wanting something better for herself, so she'd worked hard and kept her grades up even as she juggled keeping her girls safe and getting her homework done. As a result, she got a scholarship when she left high school, so five years ago she'd left that all behind to continue her education.
But just because she left it behind physically doesn't mean that she's forgotten. Or that she couldn't guess why a street girl was running while looking behind herself. Or that she doesn't know why a kid who can probably fight back is instead standing there. Or that she doesn't still know how to fight - especially since she needs to be able to do it in order to protect Dr. Stenet. It's Dr. Stenet's fault that she has enough money to buy nice things like her pretty boots, but just because her nails are nicely manicured doesn't mean that she can't also lift weights to make herself that much stronger. But as she holds Roxanne's wrists in her strong grip, she quietly whispers in the girl's ear. "If ya don't fight me, my boss and I'll get ya outta this. If ya do, I'll kick ya ass. Got it?" she asks, letting the east Gotham accent of her youth taint her voice much more than she usually does now - just letting Roxanne know that she's not dealing with some rich fool. No, she's bumped into someone who not only knows her game, but who is also stronger and has years more experience.
Meanwhile, Nina didn't fail to notice the sudden disappearance of her assistant, and it only takes her a second or two longer for her to figure out what she needs to do. The man, who gave a surprised cry of pain at Shawty's treatment of his arm, is still recovering from that when he feels the shoulder on the other side being pulled back as Nina turns him to face her. "Sir, what is wrong with you?" she asks, her expression angry and her voice appalled, "You'd hit a girl because of your suit? What kind of person does that?" Answer: an angry person, who wasn't thinking of what his actions would look like to everyone else until he had it brought to his attention.
By now both the Starbucks patrons and the people walking by are watching the commotion, casting plenty of judgmental eyes on the man. Shawty uses this moment to whisper, "That angry woman is my boss." The way that Dr. Stenet is dressed right now makes her more like a businesswoman than a doctor - just as well dressed as Shawty but while Shawty favors trendy, 'cute' clothing, Nina favors a more conservative and professional look - just the kind of person that even a man who wears expensive suits can't help but take seriously.

Eyes still closed and teeth clenched, Roxanne was still waiting for the impact and sting that was to come. Instead, she heard footsteps and then a pained yell before feeling herself get embraced by someone. Reopening hazel eyes, Roxanne saw a woman's face near hers, the lady appeared to be a couple of inches shorter then her. Feeling her fragile wrists being encamped in the woman's hands, in fear, Roxanne begin to slightly struggle until the woman's voice begin to speak to her in warning. Roxanne stopped struggling and listened closely to the stranger's voice, it had a hint of the East Ends in her voice. From that, Roxie calmed down a bit, still trembling and nodding from what she said. It's best not to fight an older East Ender.
Hearing an angry voice of another woman, Roxanne glanced from the corner of her wide eyes to the scene that was happening near the two. From her position it looked like the man that almost slapped her was groaning pain and being yelled at by a dark brown-haired woman that looked utterly off-the-rock mad. She was yelling at him because of he tried to hit her, apparently rather she was a street-rat or not, the lady was angry. And in honest, Roxanne was quite gleeful that the business guy was being taken down a notch and looked like some sort of bad guy. That what happens when you try to backhand a poor homeless girl who was only trying to find food for herself. And again, it surprises her how many good people are still in Gotham.
Still staring at the scene, Roxanne heard the short woman that was holding onto her whisper that the angry woman yelling was this woman's boss. Which means, that the shorter woman was probably her assistant. With looking at this person's boss, she looked professional, probably high-class. However, Roxanne knows a doctor when she sees them. It says with their choice of words and posture and use of gestures. The urchin hopes she'll be able to escape this situation without getting sent to a children's home or Juvenile Detention center. She's avoid them before and all she has to do now is wait till this woman lets go of her and she can slip back into the Gotham shadows, or until another opportunity presents itself.

When Roxanne stops struggling, Shawty adjusts her grip just slightly - not to loosen it at all but to ensure that she's not accidentally pinching the girl with her fingers. After all, she only wants to keep the girl from running or trying to fight her, not cause her any hurt. She mostly only voiced that threat because she knew that the girl would take it seriously if she said it that way. Well, and because she really would kick the girl's ass if she has to - but she'd really rather not. Just because someone doesn't hesitate to resort to violence when violence is needed doesn't mean that they enjoy it.
Once she's reassured that the man has been properly and thoroughly rebuked for his behavior, Nina joins Shawty and the girl. While she'd purposely been so sharp with the man to embarrass him to the point that he'd not want to press the matter further, she hadn't had to dig very deeply in order to do it. She hates violence, and really was appalled that anyone would do such a thing to anyone. Of course, in a city like Gotham that means that she gets appalled a lot, but that's the way things are.
"So, what do we have here?" she asks as she stops in front of Roxanne, bending over enough to look the girl in the eyes. She has a very kind face now that she finished being angry.
"Well, based on the smell - no offense - a street kid," Shawty states, shifting back into what is now her normal accent. Though when that prompts a questioning look from her boss, she adds, "A runaway. If she had a home and someone looking after her, she'd have washed more recently, at the very least."
"Ah!" Nina replies calmly, not looking at all bothered by this. In fact, though she's looking right at Roxanne her eyes seem a bit distant as if she's distracted by something, "Thirteen, maybe twelve..." Her hand rises slowly to lift the girl's chin just slightly. Her touch is soft and very, very gentle. "Somewhat malnourished, medium immune activation..." she comments, before smiling as she adds, "High ghrelin and adrenaline..."
"I could have told you that she's hungry and scared," Shawty comments.
Nina stops, realizing that they're probably sounding like someone examining a wild animal that they caught. Which isn't that far from the truth, actually, except that the girl is a person and therefore infinitely more important. Her expression softens as she talks to Roxanne directly, "I know you don't know us, but you don't need to be scared of us. We're nice, I promise. But I would like to know where your family is, and why you're not there?" Because she knows that the 'right' thing to do is to hand the girl over to the police and let them figure out where she's supposed to be, but she doesn't want to be too hasty - not when you're making important decisions concerning another human being. A child doesn't just end up on the streets for no reason, after all.
