Joan accepted her second booklet of information and hid a slight feeling of concern at it's very existence as she once more too to skimming through. Was Selina merely very good at her job or was it really so obvious that Joan had an added interest in the security details of the Asylum? Officially her job description didn't go past patient care and the occasional supervising of younger doctors, she knew her knowledge of the security went well past that but she had been working there a long time. Alright, it was one of the major points she'd argue needed improving if the subject ever came up with the other doctors she just didn't like to think people knew how much it bothered her.
Paranoia, the endless foe she quickly recognised and after a short line of thought to decide whether or not it was warranted this time she tries to push it aside and retrain her focus onto the topic at hand.
Selina's request to see the Asylum both during the day and at night earns a small impressed look. That was definitely points towards the woman being good at her job "I'm certain that can be arranged. I hold a fairly flexible timetable outside of my regular appointments, I'll have a copy of my schedule sent to you and try to keep you informed of any major changes" Joan really dislikes to be too predictable with her working times, though sometimes it's just a case of the work load building up and requiring those several extra hours to bring it back down to a manageable level. Withdrawing her phone from her purse Joan adds two notes to her to do list, one to send Selina the schedule, the other to make time to walk the Asylum and create a list of concerns. A third note to make sure her neighbour won't mind looking after her cat when she inevitably ends up working late is tacked on the end before she quickly stops and puts her phone away so she can't find any more things she still needs to do.
As she gets to the case studies in the information she finally decides she'd prefer to leave the more detailed read through until she was home and could stick a movie on to dull the memories of living through a few of the incidents. Instead she lifts her glass as well for a sip and offers her own smile to the groups "It's refreshing to just be working towards making things better as opposed to trying to cope with things as they are" She can't help but be sceptical and believe there's never going to be a day when they can say with absolute certainty that the Asylum is safe but she believes it can get better.

Nodding to Nathaniel, she thanks him for thinking ahead, and bringing his schedule. "That will help immensely, as all of us will be meeting regularly on this endeavor. I am hoping a week from today we will each have made some headway in our areas, and I can touch base as well."
Turning to Iris, she first sips a bit of her wine, and nods. "I'm glad you both are well versed in the more up to date teaching. Nothing but the best will be utilized, and I'm guessing with some of the more specialized, volatile patients, those areas of specialty will be priceless. And another schedule. Fantastic." She can sense the undertones between father and son, and girlfriend are a bit strained, and the vibe that Joan is giving off is a bit...peculiar as well, but trusts that personal issues will be set aside for the project. If issues do arise, they will either be addressed, or the person dealt with.
"Fantastic point, Dr. Ledford. If you wouldn't mind holding onto that topic, perhaps during our main meal we can discuss it. I have already looked into those more frequent visitors that have either been patients, or taken the opportunity to attempt escape more than once, and done a bit of prior planning. It seems that Jonathan Crane, as well as Edward Nigma, the man known by the moniker 'The Riddler' and several of the other costumed menaces that compose up the 'Rogue's gallery' have been attributed different strategies, from my viewpoint, that is. I'm guessing that your each individual insights into what brings them to attempt their crimes, and into their psyche's will allow us to better outfit the mental rehabilitation programs, as well as the physical security, and outfit the personnel with the proper prophylactics to equip them to each of the individual inmates. As an example, Ms. Pamela Isley, also known as Poison Ivy, is prone to biochemical warfare, and keen on flirtatious advances to get her way. Making sure her contact with bio materials, and keeping the staff around her strictly female will reduce her inclinations to manipulate and maneuver to getting her way. On the other hand, it will probably incense her, and possible motivate her to rehabilitation psychologically. That is, pending the diagnoses and reasoning behind her psychosis, if there is one, and her motivations for her actions."
If there is any question on if Selina Kyle has done her homework, it's squashed with her concise report on Pam. Who is not only a friend, but a cohort on the villainy side in Gotham. At times it pays to know those that cause most of the problems. Lex Luthor has either made one of the best decisions of his life, or the worst; but that all depends on what side of the fence you fall on.
After her little oratory discourse, she smiles at Jeremiah, and Joan in kind. "I believe that the road less traveled is rife with opinions of those who not have the courage to walk it themselves. And considering the influx of costumed crime in Gotham as of the past decade, it seems the time is right for your Asylum to get an update worth of it's time. While Mr. Luthor may not be quite understanding what he is enabling us to do, with his primary residence being Metropolis, he certainly does understand what costumed crime has done, but he has Superman, we have Batman, the two cities are similar, but different as well. I like to think that we Gothamites have a bit more of an edge, a noir side that shiny Metropolis lacks in it's shiny facade. And Dr. Leland; Joan, if I may, you spearheaded one of the inoculation programs against Dr. Crane's fear gas, based on an antidote that Batman had procured and reverse engineered. That is something I have great respect for. Taking the initiative to protect your own coworkers."
"And against one of the more mentally unstable patients, that is greatly admirable, especially in my eyes. I do hope you and I can meet quite soon after this meeting, considering we can start the work on your area immediately. I already have an appointment to work with the Commissioner about Blackgate, perhaps we could do a similar walk-through. Especially if you are flexible with your time. It would be greatly appreciated."
Taking up her wineglass again, she smiles at each face in kind, before taking a sip. "I agree, the asylum has sufficed in it's static form thus far, but this opportunity has allowed for a much more dynamic approach to treatment. So, as we move on to dinner, I have a few more talking points, before we fully go to questions and answers."
"The roll-out of the revamp is going to be the main aspect, but Lex is also insisting on an event. A gala, to be exact. Considering Metropham is a junction of both Gotham, and Metropolis, there will be representatives from both cities, as well as the major players in the endeavor, including you all. This will have Jim Gordon, as well as several other officers, Lex, and myself. Media will be present, and there will be an auction. Entertainment will be provided, and it will be black tie. Now, why don't we order, and have some discussion!" She invites, after laying out more of the whole endeavor, as waiters appear about them, offering menus to each.

Selina’s gratitude makes Nathaniel smile. She had asked for their schedules and so, remembering that he’d made sure to bring it. One had better be safer than sorry. “Regular meetings and touching bases will be all too necessary,” he agreed, “better to catch problems early before it’s too late.” He could only agree and hoped that indeed when that meeting came there would be headway made.
Water is sipped as he listens to Selina addressing Iris. He believes that new treatments and fresh perspectives are exactly what the asylum is lacking now and especially in the case of the patients who require much more care and who are extremely violent. Nothing has made much headway in the area yet, but again, far too many of the doctors are too absorbed in their own and only their own methods. They are dedicated to tested and rejected solutions, but so attached they’ve yet to give them up. That is Nathaniel’s opinion at least. Yet he has no interest in conflict with his father or Joan. They have their assignments, each respectively and that was a good idea. It means less area for conflict and perhaps Selina can help further make such a thing unlikely.
Something Selina says as she continues particularly catches Nathaniel’s attention: the idea of their individual insights helping to bring enlightenment to the cases such as Jonathan Crane, Edward Nigma, and Pamela. He glances around the table starting with Iris and ending with his own father after passing over Joan. If they are willing to bring their minds together what things they could get done, but before then all judgments and preconceived notions must be thrown out the window. Could they do that? Is it possible? He ponders this along with continuing to pay polite attention to the continuing discussion amongst the parties at the table. Who knows when something he’d didn’t think to ask will be answered or a question brought to light?
And in fact a question is answered. Of course, Nathaniel isn’t all that familiar with Selina’s name, but as she speaks about the woman they have come to call Poison Ivy at her request, he does realize she is aware of the patients. Selina Kyle certainly has done her homework and he casts a glance at his father.
The road less taken. It makes all the difference right? But are they really taken a lesser road or are the actual problems being placed into stark light finally? All Nathaniel knows is that the road they had been taking is failing. The walk has become bumpy and uneven. Weeds have sprouted in the weak areas.
It is with the hope the a new, paved path is now before them that he takes the menu and begins to look over it as he leans affectionately towards Iris. He gives her a questioning smile as if to silently assess how she feels about this.

Iris nods easily to Selina's words as the woman basically expounds upon exactly the idea that she'd been thinking. Well, one of them. Though when Selina begins the specific example of Ms. Isley, the nodding stops and her expression changes to a more thoughtful one. Her lips purse in possible disagreement, though nothing that she's sure enough about to actually voice. The possible suggestions in particular strike her as... odd. Of course, the woman is not her patient and she's only so familiar with the case, so she doesn't feel that it's her place to say anything, though she does glance at Dr. Arkham just because she's curious to see his reaction.
But she does write a small note to herself to become more familiar with the specifics concerning the asylum's more dangerous patients - including those not currently residing in the asylum. After all, if she and Nathaniel are going to be revamping the rehabilitation program, they need to make sure that it's broad and/or flexible enough to accommodate the full scope of the... oddness... of the patients that they have. Whatever they come up with, they certainly won't be able to copy what someone else has done - Arkham Asylum has very unique needs.
Her expression becomes far more positive, though she still has much inner pessimism, as Selina preaches further on the subject of how much change the asylum needs. Because it's very, very true - but on the other hand, it seems like people have been preaching about how things need to be different since well before she began working on the asylum, yet the changes either didn't happen or were to no substantial effect. So though she'll be putting her honest best effort into this, she's not going to dare put real hope into it as well until the results start coming in.
Then again, as Selina says more on the subject of the events ahead, she can't help but brighten just a little bit. She isn't and has never wanted to be rich or famous, but she does have to admit that she's excited by the upcoming taste of that world. It will be a fun, new experience! Of course, she'd also feel that way if someone offered her the opportunity to spend some time with a native tribe in the middle of a rainforest...
Iris takes the menu and starts to skim it when Nathaniel's movements catch her attention and she gives his hand a slight squeeze as she leans a little toward him as well. For a moment she debates just how inappropriate it might be for her to kiss him right now, and whether or not she cares. But when he gives her a questioning look she lays that thought aside for a moment and her expression turns thoughtful and kind of mixed - she thinks that this is all very interesting, but she's officially reserving judgment for now.

Nosey and invasive, Jeremiah has been called that many a time, but while Selina speaks to his son and Dr. Ledford, he politely listens, but refuses to retain or even note their expressions. He’s ready to be rid of the undertones. Nathaniel is his own man and it is time for Jeremiah to step back and let the cards play as they will, no matter the outcome. Besides, they are unimportant in light of the renovation. They’ll need to work together and that only hastens his decision to judge or hold resentment any longer, if he’d held any of the latter in the first place.
He of course can only nod in agreement when Selina first begins to speak about the patients, especially Jonathan and Nigma. Every one of them has separate methods to gain freedom and those methods evolve and adapt. Knowing about their crimes and psyches can only lead to being better able to treat and keep them from escaping. Yet his strongest reaction comes when Ms. Kyle mentions Poison Ivy. Jeremiah’s lips turn up and it’s easy to see that not only is he regarding her words with skepticism, but also curiosity. How exactly does Ms. Kyle know Ms. Isley and so very well that she could make these assumptions? He wonders because not much is known about Poison Ivy in the first place. But yes, he knows she preferred biological weapons, the end of the FBI’s career in Gotham was proof of that. He’s also aware of her flirtatious manner, but even were he to mention it, he’ll leave out that he does nothing about it, but observe. The woman herself still wasn’t offering any answers and her method is intriguing.
“You seem to know Ms. Isley very well, Ms. Kyle, and I have noticed her particular way with the male staff, but she’s yet to use them save to convince them to give her another blanket and I’ve not been under her special sway since she’s been my patient. We have lovely if not stiff talks at time. Though I won’t deny she has a way with chemicals, she killed a doctor somehow that I assigned to her, a female.” Yet he easily lets this slide to continue on. “The road less travelled. It is the very road my uncle took in constructing Arkham Asylum in the first place. He wanted to cure Gotham and our facility has been nothing but the subject of opinion and I admit most are true. It is very well time Arkham gets the full lift it has been in need of and with the likes of the people here at this table, experts all in their own rights, I’m sure we can this done.”
At the end he raises his own glass in acknowledgment of Selina’s words before taking a sip of the sweet wine. Dynamic and honestly, without much of his input. The Asylum needs to succeed if not for him for those who come after.
He mulls over the idea of a gala fondly, knowing that he’d love to take Melina out like they’ve not been for a while, but with a young child he knows the reality may be hard, but still he wants to. Those the thoughts that flutter in his mind as he opens the menu and looks it over. Perhaps he should order extra. They were at Melina’s favorite restaurant after all.

Joan also glances over to Jeremiah as Selina explains about Ms. Isley, not because she believes it's an incorrect assumption, she's been quite thorough in her research so far. This though seemed different to what she'd glanced over when nosing into the files on their newest high security patient. She supposes Isley was once a very wealthy woman and part of the high society circle, from what little she knew of Selina it wasn't unfathomable that they might have had previous contact, though that did seem a little like a potential conflict of interests if it was the case. She wasn't going to bring that up when they were close to finally making some progress though and Isley was Jeremiah's patient, she didn't have a say in what was best in this case. She might have to quietly keep an eye on things though.
Once more Joan has to show a note of surprise when Selina brings up Crane and Batman's antidote. The woman really had done her research, it wasn't something Joan considered mentioning to people, ultimately she considered it a lucky but one time event where thanks goes to Batman. It might matter more to her if Crane didn't just keep working on and changing his fear gas. She offers a smile though for the effort "I'm certain most people would see the advantages and quickly do the same. If only it had had a longer lasting effect but Jonathan is, much like many of the 'rogues', quite adaptable" Which was of course their biggest problem security wise.
"I'll have my schedule sent to you as soon as I'm home, we can arrange for the meeting at the earliest convenience" She may have to tweak it a little first to ensure there was some suitably large portions of time available "Provided I don't have a regular appointment with a patient I can't change I'm sure I can move things around to make the time, we'll work something out"
Smiles and nods her thanks to the waiter as she listens to Selina's description of the event "Fund raising presumably" It wasn't unheard of for the Ayslum to seek funds from the generous pockets of the social elite in the city, Joan had even made it to a couple of parties to help represent her work. She'd have to start practising her sales pitch again.

Nodding to each in turn, she orders her own meal, hoping that her little introduction and touching on each area now assigned to each staff member encourages discussion. It seems that once the entire table has ordered, Selina takes another sip of her wine. Outerly she is nothing less than composed, cordial, and bright. Inwardly, she just really wants to nail down the dreams, aspirations, and goals for this Institution, write up a proposal, bring that to Jeremiah and Lex, and then get started.
But that is another step. Contractors, deadlines, money. Why Lex chose her for this, she really had no clue. Other than getting her own company more business, which she wouldn't mind, but that would require expansion. And in truth, she's quite fond of her little company.

Unlike Iris, Nathaniel isn’t bothered by whether or not it’s appropriate to kiss Iris. They’re boyfriend and girlfriend and now that the discussion is over and everyone is falling into the mood of both food and inward discussion the environment is much more lax. He leans over and kisses Iris’s cheek.
“You’re skeptical too,” he said to her, “I know, but luckily we get to have a huge say on just how the patients are treated.” He chuckles. “So tell me, do you think we handle working together on that?” His tone is teasing. “After all, I need to tell you, you’re a wonderful distraction.” But that’s the reason they do have the relationship they do. They’re able to be professional when the time is needed, romantic in all the other time, and yes, sometimes they can even both. Nathaniel considers them balanced and the perfect two for the job they’ve been given.

Almost as if reading her thoughts, Nathaniel kisses her cheek and Iris smiles. Dating someone from the same workplace is fraught with all kinds of tricky questions about the lines between her public and private life, but Nathaniel is totally worth it. In fact, if that really became an issue, she's sure she'd quit her job at the asylum and find work in another facility before she'd give up Nathaniel. Though of course she'd much rather have both at this point.
Nodding slowly to his words, she quietly comments, "Skepticism is no reason not to give this a solid chance - we can only do our best and hope our wildest dreams come true." Of course, the way she says that only further emphasizes her skepticism. But she adds, "Though I'm sure that, at the very least, we'll be able to make some good changes on the smaller scale even if the big picture isn't all that we hoped for."
Having said that, she grins at his teasing and says, "Oh, but I don't think that we'll have a problem working together - the only tricky part with that will be figuring out how many hours count to put on our timesheets." Because she can easily picture how this will go: they'll start off doing a bit of work, get distracted, get back to business, get distracted again... In the end they'll get a lot of work done, but trying to sort out exactly when they were working and when they weren't will be a nightmare.
Ordering when her turn comes around, she pauses thoughtfully for several moments, trying to decide whether or not to voice what's on her mind. But especially knowing that Nathaniel is right here, she decides to give it a try. "One issue that I consider very important is the overall atmosphere of the asylum," she starts, now speaking louder so that everyone can hear her easily, "While many of the patients are clearly guilty of crimes, it's our mandate to treat and not to punish. Therefore, I think that it's critical that we attempt as much as possible to make simply being in the asylum as not unpleasant as possible for the patients. Naturally, there are limits - security is critical as well and the measures that we have to take to ensure the safety of both the patients and the staff are inherently unpleasant at times, and patients who don't behave themselves do need to face some discipline - but many of the current policies, procedures, and even design elements within the asylum are more disagreeable than they need to be." Which is understating the issue severely, at least in her opinion, but she knows better than to say it as bluntly as she feels it.

Jeremiah has no trouble ordering, but beyond that his mind is preoccupied by much more than just the reality that his asylum is going to undergo a major overhaul. That had been on his mind for ages since the Metropham idea was pitched to him. The Asylum was under much needed renovation and upgrades and Jeremiah could already see it, but there were far more things that Jeremiah found intriguing about this lunch. One of them was Iris Ledford. He had gotten off on a wrong foot about her, absolutely and embarrassingly wrong. Her ideas falling in line with the new age psychology were refreshing and intriguing and he was happy to see her voicing them. He would have to speak to her about being more vocal in meetings. He wanted those ideas, not the dust of the latter age. He was surprised she was being so vocal now, but it was a good thing. It felt almost as if he’d been awaiting such a thing.
He set his menu down after ordering and took a sip of the wine they’d been provided before turning his attention to Dr. Leland. To her he gave a polite smile. “Joan, I am looking forward to working with you. It’s been awhile since we’ve collaborated, but between us I know the asylum will benefit. You have been an employee with me for the longest and you have knowledge that can and will be put to great use.”

Iris bought up a few good points, Joan was at least inclined to agree on some and nodded slowly. She'd spent some time when she first started out training herself to see those in Arkham as patients in need of help and not criminals. It got a little harder when they tried to blow her up but she had forced herself not to take it personally, they weren't well so they couldn't be blamed "We do have a number of lower security patients who can be overlooked in attempts to control the more problematic people. In addition perhaps we should take into consideration the possibility that some of our repeat offenders are likely to take advantage of the most vulnerable. The current layout doesn't support it but while we are planning changes I think the pros and cons of separating those with a lower security risk from the rest may be worth discussing so that we might focus the security on those that need it more and relax it for others" Quite how they would decide which is which is another matter, even the worst could be very good at pretending to get better and had fooled a lot of doctors over the years.
Joan was a little more apprehensive about working closely with her boss but she returned the smile without hesitation and was as good at masking her concerns as any long term Arkham inhabitant "I'm certain we're both very keen to make some sort of progress, Jeremiah. Between the two of us I don't think there will be many incidents we haven't experienced first hand. We know what has been tried and proven not to work"
