The mention of the tabloids as a source causes Aria to give a quick roll of her eyes. Having read an article here and there about herself, she knows just how much faith to put in such things. And the more legitimate magazines are really only a notch better - they usually get the broad facts straight but then there's all those pesky little details. And that's even before they add their own slant on it. No, the only news she really trusts anymore is hearing it from the horse's mouth and certain trusted secondary sources. Not that she's opposed to spreading around the rumors from time to time...
"I see..." she replies with a nod, "So, as per usual, not as... far along as the rumors would lead one to believe." She shakes her head, idly adding, "I really must meet the man properly at some point - I've shaken his hand once or twice, but I don't believe that we've ever had a real conversation." Partly because of all the evening events she has to dodge, partly due to his own apparently erratic event-attending habits, partly because she simply finds it unpleasant trying to talk to a man while another woman is fawning over him, and partly because she's usually very busy herself at events - schmoozing her way through the crowd as quickly as possible before the impending sunset forces her to leave. That moment where they were both at the same event, both of them weren't occupied, and she noticed the opportunity simply hasn't happened yet. And she's never had reason to meet with him outside of such things.
Nodding and chuckling a bit more to herself, she decides that even if attending the Gala invisibly would actually be a bit depressing, she really ought to at least watch the auction. The whole thing will probably be horribly meaningless, but on the other hand her life would be pretty boring indeed if she didn't entertain herself when she can - and it does sound entertaining! Though when Selina asks if there's someone she wants to win herself, even after a moment of consideration she can only shrug and say, "Not unless you have Mayor Hill up for auction - I think that he's been avoiding me..." Because he's the only man she can think of that she'd like to have a long chat with, and that would be for purely business reasons.

Laughing at the small move that she does she Aria do, Selina couldn't feel more at home. Yes, her lunch date is a politician, but shit, politicians are people too. "And no, I have to agree, not as far as they even try. If someone would just...sit me down and ask questions, they'd get a different story than accosting me getting my morning coffee. I bet it's the same, but worse, for you being in such the limelight all the time." Would it really be all that hard for any of the reporters to give her a call, even the blonde Vicki Vale? Perhaps an up and coming female entrepreneur wasn't news-worthy enough.
A coy smile, and she agrees. "He seems to do better one on one, from what I've seen. And you have your own money, so he, well, how do I say it, might give you a better conversation than some of the others. It's rare he concedes more than a sentence or two to most people." Perhaps she's speaking a bit too much on what she knows of Wayne, but Aria doesn't strike her as speed-dialing the press as soon as they are done eating.
"I do believe he is on the list, but I can't say if I've seen his RSVP, yet. I'll have to send you something when I know he is going to be there for sure!" A few more bites of her own meal, and then Selina takes the conversation in a different direction. "So, if I may ask, how did you get into politics? Was it a familial past-time, were you pushed into it by parents, or just a natural gift? It's something...I know I couldn't do myself, so I always like to hear how it came about."

Chuckling lightly, Aria comments, "Oh, sitting you down and asking you questions would be far too easy. Besides, everything you told them would most certainly be a lie." Ah, the media... "And I don't think it's worse actually. Eight foot high cinderblock fence with a gated entry. Tinted windows. Private parting lot. If I want coffee, that's why I have a personal assistant. The car I drove here is not the one I left the house in this morning," she lists off, smiling as she comments, "I suppose there comes a point where you're so far in the limelight that you buy sunglasses - they rarely get a glimpse of me when I don't want them to." Which isn't really that much of a hassle, at least to her - she's had about six hundred years to learn how to keep everyone from prying too deeply into her life, after all, and though modern times keeps providing more ways of doing so it also provides more remedies and many of the old ones remain effective.
And she laughs again as Selina talks about Bruce. "It does help when you don't have to question someone's motives for talking to you quite so much," she says with a quick nod. She gets plenty of that herself, and she's only about a sixteenth of the way to being a billionaire - let alone however much Bruce is worth these days. He probably has people climbing over each other trying to get their hands on him, which is precisely why she's never made it a goal to be that rich. She likes power, not money, and there comes a point where more money simply doesn't bring enough power with it to justify all of the drawbacks.
Smiling and nodding when Selina says that she'll look into Mayor Hill for her, she allows the silence afterward to linger. The food is very good, after all, so it's easy enough to simply enjoy her lunch. Though when Selina asks a question she quick enough to finish her mouthful and reply. "Oh, no - it wasn't my parents. My father died in a fire when I was a baby, and my mother took her own life when I was fourteen," she says easily, saying those facts as what they are - just facts.
"But she practically raised me to take over the company when I was of age. It doesn't require a lot of babysitting to keep things running smoothly, though, so I wanted to do something more with myself than just that - pursue dreams of my own," she explains, "And in politics you gain so much ability to bring about change - to actually do something instead of just sitting around complaining about how things are and saying how you wish they were different." Which is perhaps the most socially acceptable way one can say that they're doing it for the power. "Assuming that you can get enough people to agree with you, of course," she adds with a slight smile - yes, that's the really pesky part about living in a republic. But alas, all of the really good countries are some form of republic anymore.

Selina can't help herself from laughing. "But I do like a bit of truth in my fibs. Doesn't everyone? Mix it up with enough outrageous things, and they won't ever suspect the honesty. Or they doubt it!" Her eyes do go wide when Aria details out how she keeps her privacy, well, private. "I might have to invest in that. Even though I do like getting my own coffee, but it's not from Starbucks, it's this little local card in Robinson...." But she nods admiringly at the magnitude, and depth of thought put into it. "I might need to pick your brain on that, especially with the press junkets, and everything for the Gala, and the revamp. I clearly don't have a solid enough plan." And if things with her and Bruce pan out ...how she feels they are, more than just her coffee might need to be ran for.
"It's gossip, there's no way around it. At least they can't peg me as going after his money, or his company; I have both myself, and I'm quite satisfied without having to headhunt." Rolling her eyes she goes to refill her glass of wine, and then Aria's.
"I know it may sound...peculiar, especially with his reputation, but...we seem to understand eachother, to a degree." It might have to do with their common thread of tragic childhoods, but she likes to believe there is more to it; even if they don't quite see eye-to-eye on several very important topics, despite being equally passionate in their stances.
When Aria's parent's are brought up, a muscle tenses in her jaw; she knows this story all too well, considering her own. "I'm sorry to hear that. My parents...died when I was younger as well. Alcohol was a commonality, I hate to say, with my parents. It's never easy to lose them so young, but on the other hand, I'm glad you were able to glean some skills from them." And at least the woman wasn't running in Selina's night circle, nor Bruce's. And if she was...well, she wasn't aware; yet.
"Exactly; but no one understands that action is the bottom line. You can sit and promise things day in, and day out, but until there is some action, some proof, it's never going to live up to expectations. Excuses can only be repeated so many times before you expect someone to learn. There needs to be that dream; first, then the dedication of grinding out idea after idea until you find something that works, and then...working on it, day in, and day out; being dedicated, and being consistent. And then; that's when people start to look up to you, no matter what sort of status, or label you have; it's your work that comes before anything." She shakes her head for a moment. "I agree. That's where the extent of the politics comes into play that I know. Your work can only get you so far. Sometimes it's nepotism that bites you in the ends, or who knows who. I've seen Gotham's powers rise because they are friends, rather than able to do the work, more often than not. And what happens then? Nothing, other than growing a group of people that value power and politics, and not change for the better, and true, honest, work." Pursing her lips, she takes another healthy swig of her wine, mildly disgruntled at the shitty politicians that tend to find purchase in Gotham.
"So you're looking to have a private conversation with Mayor Hill, I'm guessing?" She teases lightly, not wanting to assume, but Aria seems to be a keen politician, and doesn't seem to initiate working, or even meeting with someone without a plan. And on top of that she's able to make it personal, without an inkling of purpose other than it being a possible opportunity for friendship.

Shrugging lightly, Aria comments, "Oh, there's many ways, and it really depends on what sort of tactics they're using - and sometimes even which situations it bothers you. I hardly mind being 'caught' when I'm attending an event, for example - even if it's supposed to be low-key, at least I've been caught at my best." On the other hand, those who catch her at night are lucky if they leave camera-less but alive. "The basic principle with something like the Gala is that the more 'official' coverage you allow, the less anyone has to gain by being obnoxious. And the beauty of official coverage is that it's under your control - you can choose who they are and give them boundaries," she explains, smiling at the end.
Nodding as Selina speaks more of her connection with Bruce, Aria comments, "It doesn't sound peculiar to me - sometimes you just 'get' a person, no matter who they are." In fact, Aria rather thinks that she wouldn't have a hard time understanding where a man like Bruce comes from, actually - the bigger point for her is that she doesn't really care to anyway. But any feelings the man may have about the pointlessness of a life where you can have everything except what you really want - to say that she can relate is an understatement.
Though she notices the tension in Selina's jaw, Aria doesn't really react to that. But because of it she's not surprised when Selina explains that she was orphaned too. "I'm sorry to hear that as well," she says with a somber nod, "But in my case - well, you can't miss what you've never had, and I don't remember my father. And my mother... not a surprise. She never recovered from my father's death - very unhappy woman. Only hung on long enough to secure my trust fund, show me the world, and see me settled in that boarding school." She simply sighs at that and shakes her head. Normally she wouldn't bother going into such detail, but if there's a chance that Selina would be surprised by her dispassion then it's better to tell the fuller story.
Nodding easily as Selina rambles about the merits of action, Aria comments, "By getting into politics, I've expanded the number of things I can do something about." But she'll not comment on how bad nepotism is - she's a very big fan nepotism, actually. It is, after all, not that difficult to befriend or even make yourself related to the right people, after all. Having to actually get masses of people on board, on the other hand, is tediously slow and difficult. At least given the methods that she's used to, anyway - she's spent the past couple hundred years trying to come up with new strategies that actually take advantage of this shift in the world but it's not been going well. So instead she comments, "At least the good thing about incompetence is that it tends to be self-limiting in the longer term. Wait long enough and someone better will come along. Even in modern times 'survival of the fittest' comes into play eventually." Though probably not quickly enough for someone who doesn't have as much time to wait as Aria does.
The way that Selina brings up Mayor Hill again causes Aria to smirk and comment, "Well, to preemptively dispel a few rumors - I find wedding rings that aren't from me to be a real turn-off." She's just joking, naturally - but such things do need to halfway be said if only because of how many very public scandals involving politicians make the news - for some reason, everyone is so much more shocked by that sort of thing when a politician does it than anyone else. "But yes - we have many things to discuss, he knows it, and yet my secretary can't seem to get an appointment for us to meet out of his secretary," she comments, looking somewhat amused by this.

Aria seems to be one of those few people that just...gets it. If she is caught by the media, it's in her favor, always. Never caught unawares. Still disgruntled at both politics, and paparazzi, Selina lets out a sigh, keen on what Aria is saying. The woman has to be her age; but it's hard to tell with the fantastic glow she has to her skin. Either way, she just has a way about her. Thankfully there is a job, or even a career for everyone, and she's even more thankful she didn't pull the politician card. She's quite happy doing her day, and night job, and she does both well.
"Thank you for understanding. I'm learning, albeit slowly, that some things are just better left to the imagination of those who dig, and other things should just be held close to the chest." And then a claw ran along that closeness, but that's an entirely different train of thought that invades her mind, her cheeks flushing slightly.
Aria's next words cause Selina's eyes to snap to the woman's face. Her first instinct is to believe she's lying. Why? Because her story so closely follows her own childhood, it's uncanny. Except Selina remembers more than she wishes she could forget; and it wasn't always unhappy. "I'm sorry to hear that. I'm...I'm glad you were able to channel such an abrupt situation into something you're not only good at, but that reaches out to aide others, and you flourish at," She stumbles over her words for the first time in their luncheon, her own childhood memories coming to the surface. It's not that she's ignored them, it's just..she rarely discusses them with anyone who...understands. Even Bruce took a different tact with his parent's death.
"My parents had an issue with Alcohol, as well. They both passed in an accident when I was younger, so I know what it's like to be shuffled off to boarding school." With another wrinkling of her nose, Selina offers her disdain as well for her experience there, repeating herself. But Aria seems so damn well adjusted. And her feline senses aren't tingling, so she can't quite pick up on if the woman has a rather 'active' night life.
Nodding as Aria mentioned the true reason why she does what she does, Selina smiles. A true optimist. Now that is rare. Even if the woman wants to get her name out, well, she's doing a damn good job of hiding any negative leanings or wantings, political wise. Nearly spitting out her wine, Selina nods, holding her napkin to her lips as she excuses herself. "I'm finding very little to disagree with you on. Survival of the fittest...is quite an apt way to describe it. And I'll try to make sure that Mayor Hill gets your bid for the auction. Just as much as he's...difficult, I doubt you'll have an issue with him. Call it a pre-arranged date, one that his secretary can't dodge, nor can he this time."
In reality? It's the least that Selina can do for all that Aria is helping her with. Hill probably won't garner that much, and Selina can bid in lieu of Aria to win. And considering it's her function, well, her rules. Even better, is the verbal knowledge that Aria is passing along to Selina. So while the two continue to finish their meals in comfortable silence, Selina thinks over several of the details.
"You...wouldn't know where to get a more ...formal gown, would you? I'm trying for something...classic...yet unique, and haven't been able to find anything that has caught my eyes just so, yet." She sighs, shrugging. It's almost embarrassing to have to ask to find a dress, of all things. But Lex is demanding...certain things, and she's not going to tell him no.
"Also, if you want, you're more than welcome to see the set-up prior to the event. It won't be ..quite fully in bloom, but it's better than waiting for the photographic aftermath, that will no doubt be biased by the media. Even though Ms. Vale will be there, as well as Mr. Kent and Ms. Lane. Lex is demanding media coverage from both cities be present. 'United front,' and all," she mimics, her fingers putting up air quotes as need be.

Nodding solemnly, Aria's smiling to herself on the inside. It's always so amusing when something she's doing strictly for herself somehow happens to be helpful to someone and then they're so very grateful. In fact, it appears that her entire political career will be like that - every decision she'll be making has groups of people for or against it, so either way she'll be pleasing someone.
Though as Selina indicates her disdain about boarding school Aria shrugs at that too. "The one I went to wasn't that bad, actually. Well, it seemed a bit confining staying in the same place after having lived everywhere with my mother for so long, but I suppose it helped me academically," she muses a little. Not that school is really that difficult for her. If anything, schoolwork is boring - she's had several lifetimes to learn things, after all, and so many subjects just don't change over time. Then again, that means that she can keep her focus more on the social side - which was especially important this time around as she went into politics and a few of her friends from boarding school became rather important. And there are subjects that change during the roughly fifteen years between repetitions of high school - science and technology, especially, and it helps her keep current.
And honestly, with so much of her attention on all of that not just lately but since she became Aria, her 'night life' has been far less interesting than it might have been. Trying to squeeze everything she can out of her daytime hours, as much as possible gets done at night - paperwork, things she needs to read, sometimes phone calls, and anything else that she can do just as easily as a ghost. As she never needs to rest, she always ends up with more time on her hands at night than she needs, but it's still nice to have some down time to rest her mind and simply think about things. Oh, she'll still go out and actually use her ghostly form to her advantage now and then, but it's become more of an occasional thing - she doesn't feel the need as much when her day life is so successful.
As a perfect example, here she has Selina promising to help her with Mayor Hill - something she might have eventually done something about at night if this alternative and much more legitimate method didn't present itself. Why risk exposing her secret over such a matter when there's another option? Well, other than the fact that it's much more fun - but her long life has taught her to side with wisdom over mere entertainment. Laughing, she comments, "That's the idea! He wouldn't be able to back out of it." Not without looking awful, anyway, as she most certainly would make sure the press got wind of it if he did - and he knows that.
Perhaps to her credit, Aria is only mildly surprised when Selina asks about a dress. But picking out the right dress when you're hosting and not merely a guest is an extra special challenge. "Well, I assume that you've already checked the usual places," she starts, as any proper socialite can recite that list by heart, "But if you're looking for something especially formal, have you thought to look through the bridal boutiques? The selection of colored dresses at such places for the non-traditional bride is so high these days, and many you'd never know were meant to be bridal without a veil." But they do tend to be more richly designed than other formal attire. Of course, the price tag matches - but then again if Selina simply can't find a dress that's good enough among the more standard fare that may be what she needs to do.
Laughing lightly at the idea of Gotham and Metropolis faking a united front about anything, Aria nods and says, "I'll have to double check my schedule, but I believe that I have some free time earlier in the day - and I'd love to see what you've come up with."

Chuckling slightly at their drastically different experiences, Selina nods, sipping on her wine. "My own experience was opposite yours, it seems. Confining, yes, but I traveled after the confines, and the academic...seemed to be almost non-existent. It wasn't until I was in Europe did I really...learn anything." And it was true. Her formative years were fine, but her life really seemed to start in Italy, in France, in London. Eyes twinkling, she finds her mind returning to a few of those new, exciting times, both filled with joy, fear, and loss. She herself was an angry, angry late-teen, but somehow, her loss kept her to motivation. And that motivation has her where she is now, of all things.
Selina winks. "Well, I know someone who to call to add to that, if he does back out, you know." She doesn't like the media as much as the next person, but if Aria has been trying for how long to even just chat with the man, she can help. "I have looked at those places, but I just...am looking for something a bit specific. And I've never thought of looking at the bridal stores. Even though that will add even more fuel to the flame. I guess at this point, the more news to the event, the better, though. Hm. I guess if I can't find anything after that, I may just need something custom made!" Smiling, she nods, hoping dearly that Aria can find some time to stop by. "I do hope something opens up for you; it's a pity you are already busy that evening, with all that you're putting toward the event. I just want you to get credit for helping. So your name will be mentioned, no doubt."

"Oh, I love Europe!" Aria gushes instantly. Though when she thinks of Europe, it's more out of nostalgia for the Europe of the past - it just hasn't been the same since the 18th century. Oh, modern day Europe is nice, she supposes, but when compared to how it used to be... "We spent more time in Brazil, though. But everyone should have the opportunity to travel - it broadens the mind. Though at some point, Math and English are important too," she comments with a smile, before pausing to savor another bite of her lunch. Well, she won't complain about modern day French cooking, at least.
"Well, custom is a thought too! Though you should decide that quickly - it does take time to make a custom dress," she says with a smile. Though not as much as it used to - and her thoughts shift so easily to the many dresses she's owned throughout the centuries. She's actually saved many of her favorites, most from an age when every dress was custom and literally cost a small fortune. She has mixed feelings when she compares it to modern fare - on the one hand, the automation of so much of the process has drained so much of the craft out of it, but then again the sheer variety of fabrics, dyes, and styling allows for designs that the dressmakers of centuries ago could only dream of. "But do give the bridal set a try - after all, they specialize in giving a woman THE dress, even if it's with a different event in mind," she says with a smile.
"And, politics being what it is, mentioning my name a lot really is thanks enough - it's money I won't have to spend next time I campaign," she says with a smile and a shake of her head, "That's the downside of the job, honestly - having to think that way constantly."

Wrinkling her nose at the thought of a custom dress, Selina knows the amount of work that goes into that, but also knows the quality that usually comes from it, as well. "I have one last place to look. Thankfully they're holding a few dresses for me. But if not, and if the bridal shoppe proves fruitless, I guess I will have to head that route." Sighing; the motion a mix of delight at their sumptuous meal, and the fact that Aria just -can't- make it. "Are you sure you're not able to make the event? The more we discuss it, I just...its sad."
Stumbling slightly on her words, and then setting down her fork, she glances across the table at the politician, finally realizing how youthful she does look. "I can understand if you still can't, but don't blame me for trying, no?" She adds with a laugh, fully focusing on their conversation. "I just...I can understand how tiring it must be. People always having an ulterior motive for meeting with you. They always want something, or need something in return. And this...mentioning your name is nothing compared to what some of the other participants are asking. Trust me. And while the invitation was to most of the big names in Gotham, I'd been wanting to just..meet you for a while. It's hard to make friends it seems, especially with Gotham being more than male dominated in the private sector, and even in your field. So you have the mindset, and understand what it can be like." And her sentiments are true. More often than not men are the majority in the private sector, the public sector, and political wise.

"Oh, I know," Aria says, "If it was possible to rearrange my schedule, believe me I would. But there are some things that simply can't be rescheduled, no matter how much I'd like to be able to." She shakes her head and sighs, her reaction rather genuine. As much as she accepts and even thrives with her constant transformations, they are sometimes rather inconvenient. But if it weren't for them then she'd be long dead and forgotten by now, so she'd be quick to say that they're worth it. Still... she misses all the best parties...
When Selina mentions what others have asked of her, Aria gives an empathetic eyeroll - yes, she can relate. Even to more than her political career - since she's always sought out and achieved powerful positions, she's always ended up with people wanting favors. Which are always very irritating - whether you're a politician, organizing a major event, or are a medieval Lady - it's always the same.
Though as Selina goes on to state her reason for simply wanting to meet with her beyond that, Aria first blinks in slight surprise and then smiles. "Oh, I do! I mean, it seems like I spend all of my days anymore with employees or constituents or business partners... It's amazing how easy it is to be surrounded by people all the time, but not really connect with any of them. Because, well for example, I genuinely like my assistants and so forth as people, but simply the fact that they work for me makes things... different. More distant," she comments with a sigh, "And you're right - most of the people more on our level are men. And men... well, they try, but so often they just don't 'get' us. So yes - real, genuine friends are hard."
Then again, friends are also something that she partially avoids - but not fully. What she really avoids is falling in love with someone, since whoever the object of her affection is would wither away and die in what is a relatively short time to her. But while there's depth to some friendships, it can also be one that isn't so deep, and that's more tolerable. To her it's perhaps something like owning a pet - she knows going in that the relationship will probably be quite finite, but the pleasant memories outweigh the ending. In this case she only expects to keep being Aria for a handful of years, so it would end then. Well, unless she shares her secret, in which case it can continue until Selina dies - but to her that's still only so much time.

Selina smiles at Aria. "I was just begging, trust me, but I do understand. Nights for me tend to be all business, and rarely any fun. This is a rare event that I don't have full control over. Otherwise, I'd have chosen an entirely different time, because I quite understand that not everyone is able to fully dedicate an entire evening, and possible night to just one endeavor." And she knows for a fact it's why Bruce acts up, and has back up plans in play when he hears of something else occurring, where Batman is needed. He's not really that ill behaved, it's just an easier cover with serious personal ramifications that he's willing to accept, and sacrifice to keep others' safety first.
"I am contemplating a luncheon after this whole gala mess is concluded. And if we could do it jointly;" Selina grins conspiratorially, "I'd love for you to help me. And I'm thinking the timeframe might benefit more people, than a late evening event. No doubt more like-minded females could help you with votes, and getting a group together of strong women is always, well, entertaining." Sipping her wine, Aria's eyeroll doesn't escape her. If anything, she has more respect for the politician-She's a woman, and plays the game, but isn't letting it play her. Much respect is warranted. "There is always that line that is invisible, but glaring when you try to cross it; trust me, I feel quite the same way. One never forgets that those people are your employees, when you really feel the need to connect with them. I hate it, as well."
Hopefully, her own commitments at night are explain away due to her 'work,' considering whichever way you look at it, it is work, but just for whom. And she doesn't feel close enough to Aria in one sitting to really divulge her nocturnal interests honestly. Instead after contemplating Aria's admissions, and her own, she raises her own wine glass to the woman, a smile on her lips and her eyes as she toasts to them both; "Here is to a budding, real, friendship between two entrepreneurial women, in the vast sea of testosterone. Luck, love, and winning votes to us both!" She declares.

As Selina starts talking about a luncheon, to say that she has Aria's full attention would be putting it mildly. "To put it simply: I would love that!" she quick to say, "Both to help and participate - I'm sure it would be very entertaining!" It doesn't come anywhere close to making up for missing the Gala, but it certainly sounds like a good time in its own right. And she could certainly use more contacts, and Selina seems to be in a different enough circle that Aria is guessing she wouldn't know most of those she'd invite - which is a very good use of her time, really.
"Perhaps, to be on the safe side, we should pencil in a date and time as soon as possible? My schedule being what it is, the further in advance the better," she comments, smiling slightly and shaking her head, "But the hours around lunchtime do tend to be the most flexible, as long as I don't accidentally double book myself." Though honestly, she'd probably drop almost everything in favor of something like this, but the more she can keep up the appearance of being very busy the less people find it odd or even notice that they never see her at night. And that's always critical - being found out by the wrong person would range anywhere from irritating to outright dangerous. Selina has a very long way to go before Aria would even consider telling her such a thing, barring some unforseen event.
Still, already Aria finds Selina to be quite the enjoyable person, so she's quick to raise her glass at the toast and give an enthusiastic, "Hear, hear!" Letting her glass gently tap Selina's, she immediately drinks to that. Even if it ends up only being a few years, she's sure that she'll enjoy this.
