The few moments that Dr. Crane had stepped away from his new patient seemed like an eternity. He had Edward in his sights and he was watching him pick himself apart. Each piece he ripped ruthlessly from himself and even watched it tumble to the floor. He was only inflicted that much more damage to what had already been done. Nothing had went according to plan, but it had still come out so perfectly. The sudden snap back at him didn’t phase him, but he didn’t get the answer he wanted.
The doctor took a step back when he shouted, trying to process the words that were spewing from his mouth, probably much slower to him than in reality. The man before him was a broken Riddler, sobbing and groaning on the ground to himself. He was terrified, and it was beautiful. Why couldn’t he see what he had done to him?
He had ruined him.
Dr. Crane had ruined The Riddler. He had taken the animal in its cage and indeed shown in what he wanted it to be. But had he tilted the scales too far this time? He tried to wipe the thought from his mind. If it wasn’t all the way to the ground The Riddler wouldn’t have been who he was to him. It was only in that moment that he realized everything else he said, luckily with Miss Glass being absent….with everyone being absent. The patient on the table wouldn’t remember much of this, if she was coherent at all to be able to at this moment.
Edward’s distraction had proved effective as he let another arm get away from him, while she was still ripping at the binds. Finally he put all of his pressure on her to get it in the strap and hook it tightly. He place a firm palm down on her abdomen to keep her from lurching up and doing more harm to herself than anyone else. Her screams among Nigma speaking, sweet symphony. Once he had her under control he gained his focus back and put it on to him. “I seem to remember the experience a bit differently Edward Nigma… and several after that simply didn’t happen that way…” He moved away from he once she was secured and took long strides to his position. He tilted his head as he got closer and put his hands in him pockets. “ Or are you just trying to remember it the way that lets you hide from your fear the most?” The doctor almost smiled as he approached him.
He bent his knees down and supported his weight on the balls of his feet where he crouched. His eyes came to meet Edward’s and stared into that now empty hole that used to hold so much life. “You wont escape it….and you never could.” he told Edward again as if he had forgotten the first time he told him. This was simply a game they played, and he was going to win.
