It doesn’t matter that Jeremiah is taking her to be very serious. Lethally serious. The point is, he’s not one to cower and maybe that’s what she wants. He believes she’ll escape and the fact that he doesn’t understand what she’s capable make him doubly suspicious of her. In fact it makes him terrified, but he’s not one to show that. Never. Far too many would be less subtle about taking advantage of that. So he doesn’t show it. It’s a conditioned response and it usually takes a lot to even show his true feelings on a matter. He’s not paid to do that, he’s not paid to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but it. He’s given a job to listen, agree, and gently press people into giving answers that will help him diagnose and help them.
That’s the job description.
He’s not underestimating her and so he gives an irritated scoff back to Ivy. Not because he’s offended at her amusement, but because she’s totally off on the wrong idea. “And it’s adorable how you seem to think I’m voicing understanding. I’m not. I’m voicing the fact that I’m quite sure neither of us are being quite as truthful as we could be to one another. I’m very aware you’re leading me on to something. I don’t understand you. Even if I would like to. I believe, which does not mean it’s true…but I believe you think me unworthy of understanding fully. And that is not my personal problem.”
He does not return her smile and instead stands. He doesn’t take it as a compliment. He takes it as an arrow aimed right at him. He takes it as a threat. “At the rate I’m going…I think that someday, yes, I will…and I’m afraid of that.”
He turns away. “Our time is up. You can go back to your cell.” Having accomplished nothing more than just being a waste of both their times. She doesn’t understand he’s not setting himself up as a threat and he’ll be honest, he understands so little about her.
