After FBI Plot
The cot squeaked as Edward shifted his form onto it. He pressed his back against the wall and spread his legs out over the bed. His eyes looked at the glass door that contained him. His eyes shifted to the other cells that were relatively empty. He was one of the first to be moved back into Arkham once it reopened. It felt similar to pouring salt into an open wound, and he frowned in disappointment as he continued stare. His plastic cane leaned against the cot, and he found his hand reaching for it. He picked it up and rolled it in his hands out of pure boredom.
He sighed and closed his eyes, placing his cane on his lap. The walls made him feel trapped and reminded him of failure taunting the back of his mind. How? How had the Batman win? He cheated. You weren’t supposed to cheat. His mind wandered over the many events that took place in China. His meetings with shady characters, the placement of objects, and how close he was to the computer security room. It had been feet away before the blast knocked him on his feet. How many times had he been knocked to the ground?
His nose was still healing, and he wore a simple bandage to keep the bone in place. His bruises had faded for the most part. His frown deepened as his thoughts became darker. Batman had not won that game of chess. It was like saying a child who stole pieces from the board had won. No, it was cheating. “I merely must reset the board,” he stated to himself before a smirk played on his lips. He would make it so Batman could not cheat this round, and the risk of failure would be even greater. He first would have to get out of this dreaded dungeon.
“You have a visitor, Nigma,” the orderly stated from outside his cell.
Edward had been so distracted by his thoughts of Batman he hadn’t even noticed the disturbance. The words caught him off guard. A visitor? Who would visit him? He puzzled with the thought. It could possibly be the Ozzy in need of something from him or Selina here to hopefully apologize for her horrid behavior. “It appears I’m quite popular, but who wouldn’t want my company,” he commented offhandedly as he pushed himself off the cot. He limped over to the glass door and leaned his cane up against it. He then held his hands at the small window. It was opened and then his hands were cuffed. He stepped back, and waited for the door itself to open. He listened to the orderly put in the code, taking note to how it sounded on each button. The whole door then opened, and the orderly pushed out the wheel chair.
Edward rolled his eyes at the chair before taking a sit. “If you are going to force me to use this, could I at least suggest better quality,” he mumbled as the man pushed him through the hallways and to the rooms where the intensive treatment inmates took visitors. It was the same white room, metal table, and one-way mirror that they had their wonderful therapy sessions. The orderly ignored the comment as he did all the others so it left Edward to his thoughts. He decided to focus on the riddle of who the visitor could be. Was it the Commissioner to threaten him over his son? He shouldn’t be too angry since the boy had asked to tag along. Was it Batman to beat in his face once more?
The orderly opened the door to the room, and Edward eyes widened ever slightly, thankful that the woman back was towards him at the moment.
Doctor Nina Stenet.
Strangely enough, since Edward’s capture he had not thought about her once. As his mind went over the Chinese riddle, he had completely forgotten that she had been there. The woman turned her head when the door open, and his response was natural, smirk. It might be degrading to be pushed in with a wheel chair, but there was nothing to do about that now. His mind was too wrapped up in his thoughts about Nina to really notice how pathetic he might look with handcuffs, broken nose, orange jumpsuit, and being wheeled around the table.
Nina. Nina. Nina. His mind ran over the recent events in China, focusing on the points with her. She hadn’t left the suite really. She had just been there…waiting patiently…like a pet. Why had he brought her again? His mind wandered to his thought process at the time. The FBI was in town, and he hadn’t wanted her in Gotham. He had been worried, hadn’t he? Why? His mind wandered over conversations they had. They always seemed to be either about her work or his, and if not it was some type of fight or argument. He remember there used to be something about her that really caught his interest, and as his chair was pushed under the table, he looked at her with observant eyes, almost in search for what it had been.
Something…there certainly was something.
He had to admit he trusted her, which was rare for him to feel among any person. The fact that she was here seeing him only proved that she did care. The fact that she never once betrayed him proved that she deserved his trust, but once again…why did he feel the need to tell her.
“Hello dear,” he said with confidence and a slight nod.
It was not that he didn’t like Nina. His mind thought to the moments of intimacy that they had shared both physically and emotionally, but there was something else at the moment. It was something that he had started to feel in China when she brought up her plans or interest. It was a sense of irritation or the feeling of exhaustion. He felt it now that he looked at her, almost prepared for having to work for something. Yes, that’s what it was. He felt he had to work for it, while it represented something menial and routine…something that had been figured out and solved.
“Why are you here?” he asked the riddle without really giving her the chance to greet him.

Life has been... interesting lately. And none of it in a good way. She went from being so secluded and 'safe' in a small, boring little bubble to having all of that so abruptly fall to pieces in the course of an evening. Undoubtedly that had even more of an impact on Edward than it did on her, but he's experienced all of this before. For her it's been an emotional roller coaster with many more trenches than peaks.
The only bits of good news is that it wasn't very long after that when the FBI left Gotham and she was free to return, and that when she'd carefully inquired about her status with the law she found that the desire of the government to prosecute her for the things they know and suspect that she did are roughly counterbalanced by their desire to sweep the whole matter of her injury at the hands of Agent Tiff under the rug before it draws any more attention than it already has. Whether she'll get a slap on the wrist with a fine or get a small settlement from the government is still lost in the paperwork and negotiations. But she took the precaution of hiring a good lawyer to monitor the case and make sure they don't try to pull something on her unexpectedly. Good lawyers are hard to get right now due to the sudden surge of cases being handled in the city, but her brother managed to pull a few strings for her.
Of course, throughout all of this Edward has been on her thoughts. Not so much during the day when she has so much work to do - of course one of her first goals after returning to Gotham and making sure that she could show her face without being arrested was to get the ball rolling on restarting her business. But at night when she's more left to her own thoughts she's been missing him. As fleeting and frustrating as it was wanting to see him while he was busy in China, she'd take that in a heartbeat over the complete loss of contact.
So when she found out that she would be permitted to visit him at Arkham she couldn't resist the chance to do so. At least once, anyway - she has no idea how he's been dealing with all of this and whether he'd want to see her or not. Undoubtedly he's upset by what happened, but is it to the point of wanting to be left alone or will he welcome the distraction? At least she can find out.
She's never set foot in this or any other asylum before. And she can't say that she likes the place at all. As she waits for them to bring Edward, she has a hard time picturing him being in such a place at all. Yes, she realizes that he's a criminal, recently caught attempting to start a war and considered insane by whatever professional makes that sort of call, but surely he deserves better than this place?
She turns when she hears the door open, her expression mostly blank since this situation is so unfamiliar that she's unsure of how to react to anything, but there's a certain tiredness in her features. Everything that's happened since she last saw him has been wearing on her mind lately - she's really a woman who does best with a solid routine and hasn't had that at all recently - and that shows so easily on her features. But the tiredness softens a bit as she takes in that smirk, though her eyes drift briefly over his current appearance: bandage on his face, the single most awful bit of clothing she's ever seen him wear, and being pushed around in a wheelchair? And yet it's still Edward.
Her own appearance, aside from the tiredness around her, is not any different from what he'd remember. Well, except that she's now ditched the crutches entirely. To keep up appearances, she is wearing a brace around her knee that doesn't impede her movements much but would theoretically assist a healing joint, if her knee were in fact still in need of such a thing. She gives him a very small, sympathetic smile - conveying little more that she's somewhat sad to see him in such a situation.
But that expression no more than lightly touches her face before the way he greets her shifts it into a small frown. Something seems... off, and she recognizes that instantly. Then again, given all that's happened since she last saw him, that doesn't seem odd. Merely a bit saddening, as she'd felt that they'd grown closer than ever while they were in China and there'd been that fleeting hope that it wouldn't change. "Is that question rhetorical, or do you really not know?" she asks as she takes her own seat, not liking the fact that he even asked it. But she easily relents and her expression eases somewhat as she comments, "They don't let you walk?" Okay, a little bit of an awkward start, but that's only to be expected. She definitely wanted to see him, but now that she is, she's not sure what to say. At least, not without some measure of privacy, but she's guessing that in a place like this she might as well ask for the moon.
(OOC: I hope you appreciate just how hard this was.)

Edward took in her appearance and expression quickly. It appeared as if nothing had changed for her. He never really thought of what might have happened to Nina in China. He had spent most of his ride back rolling in the ‘trunk’ per say of Batman’s batwing thing. No matter how loud he shouted his angry rants at Batman, it seemed he was ignored. It didn’t take him long to figure out that it was sound proof, but it didn’t stop him from challenging the wall with his loud voice. When he finally reached the States his throat was sore.
He just hadn’t really cared enough to figure out what had happen to Nina, which he supposed was odd since he cared so much before….but that in itself was odd for him. Did it really matter? Obviously she managed to make it back was not in custody, and now, she had decided to entertain him with a visit.
He caught the frown immediately and the tone in her voice. It caused him to frown at the accusatory nature of it. He did greatly dislike when she had that tone with him. It held too much disrespect and reminder that Nina did not hold her tongue with him like she should at times.
However, she made a good point. She was here to see him because she…loved him. Once again his thoughts went back to the night that they had argued over the statement. If she loved him why did she not save him? Why was she not willing to sacrifice everything to help him escape? He had heard her reasoning over and over again, but now that he sat in Arkham, it only insulted him. Query and Echo would have dived in front of a metal truck for him, which they had done before. Those girls loved him….they had loved him too much. He mentally shook at the memory of how clingy they had been. Thank goodness Blackgate still manage to hold them.
Nina is smart enough not to stay on the comment and quickly changes the subject. He will give her credit there; though she changed it to a subject he did not particularly care for.
His frown turned to a halfhearted smirk. “Ah you see dear,” he heard up his wrist with the handcuffs on them, “There ‘necessary’ security makes it impossible for me to use a cane with visitors and ‘therapy’ sessions. They also prevent me from walking for ‘medical’ requirements.” He scoffed at all of the reasons he had been told when he had first made the argument years ago. He had actually managed to convince them to give him a cane, but he had used the cane to knock out a guard and escape. Since then they did not allow him to use it when he was being transported. “I do get to walk in my wonderful cozy cell and the rec room, when they grace me with a plastic cane,” he said mockingly.
He did not particularly know what to say to her now. Was this just for them to chat? Why would he want to waste time that could be spent calculating on a chat? Unless…maybe she had finally decided that she would help him. That could be beneficial.

Though Nina definitely feels like she's still a fish out of water, she finds herself gradually coming to terms with it. This is where all the lawyers from both sides, judges, mental health professionals, etc. have decided that Edward belongs, and not for the first time. Okay. It becomes easier as he talks - he always has liked to talk, and though once or twice even she thought that he went overlong with it, the vast majority of the time she's happy to listen. Though it hasn't been so long in the number of days, the amount of physical separation seemed to make those days stretch and right now she's finding that she misses hearing him talk.
"Hmm," she says, giving him a sympathetic frown as he explains the wheelchair. It's all too easy for her to feel for just how undignified it is to be wheeling him around - treating someone like him like so much of a cripple is inhumane. Though on the other hand, when he comments on it being a security issue she can quickly guess why they wouldn't want him to have a proper cane or even have a plastic one much of the time. So he really brought the wheelchair on himself so she doesn't feel like she can add to his complaints about it for that reason. Though that doesn't mean that she doesn't think it's terrible that the alternative is a wheelchair of all things.
But though she's unsure what to say this is one of those situations where even she minds awkward pauses, so there's only a brief pause before she forces herself to talk. "You know, it's very strange to me, seeing you here," she comments thoughtfully, her eyes going to her hands on her lap as she fights for words, "Very strange - like seeing a new sportscar parked in the middle of a dump. I... well, I know it's happened before, and I thought I was prepared for... anything... but I don't think that I really believed this was possible until it happened. I think a part of me still didn't really believe it until I saw you a moment ago." In total absence of knowing what to say, she finds herself simply saying what's on her mind right now. At least it's coming out ambiguous enough that only Edward would be able to be completely certain about what she really means by all of that. She's guessing that he would not appreciate her saying anything he couldn't wave off if someone asked about it later.
"And I didn't know if you'd welcome a visit or not. I mean, I could see you wanting to be left alone, or being bored and happy for the distraction. I thought I should come at least once to ask," she adds, her eyes now shifting to meet his. This, at least, was one thing she knew that she wanted to say. Though when she first decided to come she was certain that she wanted him to say that he wanted her to visit, now that she's seen just how... unhappy the place is, she's not so certain. She'd miss him terribly not seeing him, but on the other hand seeing him here is harder than she thought. Either way it's difficult, but she'll do whatever he wants. She loves him, after all.

The nonchalant ‘hmm’ pressed through Nina’s lips. He had heard it too many times to count now, and it never agitated him as much as it did now. Yes, it had always bothered him because it only proved that she did not want voice her thoughts. She did not want to explain what she really thought of him or the situation. It was her talented way of dodging or changing a conversation, and it annoyed him. Why did she have to show concern yet make it come like indifference?
He did not know why these little ticks about Nina were finally coming to the forefront of his mind. He usually managed to justify them with one explanation or another…but he just didn’t care enough to do so now. It seemed pointless because it would only continue in the future. Edward had no interest in justifying her expressions for the rest of his life. If anything, he had little interest of doing it for the next five minutes.
He leans back in chair almost bored as his handcuffs clink together in the movement. His eyes watching her out of respect, waiting for whatever reason she had actually come to see him. What did she want from him exactly? A hug? The thought caused a sadistic smirk to appear on his face in humor. She continued with something unrelated to his previous statements. Ah, changing the subject just as predicted. He listens and has to mentally agree that indeed he did feel like a sportscar parked at the dump. Arkham was so far beneath him, but it’s not like he ever spent any prolong periods here. Arkham was always temporary.
Her illusion to the event in China was clearly noted by him. She did not believe he would actually get caught. That was interesting since he knew based on her expression at times that she hoped for him to be stopped. She never would understand how and why he worked the way he did. Admittedly, he hadn’t been expecting to be caught. It was his best plan! How did Batman foil it? Ugh it was so infuriating. The man had cheated…he had to have cheated! He frowned slightly at the thought, but tried to push the riddle of Batman out of his mind as Nina mentioned her next statement.
She came to ask if he wanted visits…
If all her visits add such little value to his intelligence or time, he really had no interest in them continuing. He had two options right now. He could either convince her to come back again with something that he needed…or he could merely state the truth. The problem with option one is that he already knew the answer. It would be an obnoxious argument that merely lead them in a circle where Edward still didn’t get what he want.
Waste of time.
He let out a sigh as he shifted in his chair. He leaned forward slightly putting his hands on top of the table. “To be honest dear, I would rather if you had not come. I have a low tolerance for boredom,” he stated with a shrug. The words were harsh, but Edward was completely oblivious to that fact. After all, he was being honest. People should not get mad at honesty, even if it is blunt.

Nina starts to nod at his statement. Yes, she realized that he might not want to see her while he's here. It's... well, it's difficult for a number of reasons. The inability to speak freely, the somewhat humiliating situation he's in - not just the wheelchair but everything else on top of that. She's not sure if she'd want anyone she cares about seeing her in a place like this either.
But then as he finishes his statement she suddenly stops. "I'm boring?" she asks in surprised disbelief. He's never called her that before! Though she can recall a few occasions when he said things of similar effect. Then again, that's now been a very long time ago. Normally it's not an adjective she'd bother with - so what if people think that she's boring? It's not like she was put on this planet to amuse them! But this is Edward saying it, and she does value his opinion on things. He may disbelieve that, given how frequently she doesn't do what he says, but it's never because his opinion isn't factored in.
"Since when?" she asks, her brow furrowing a little. But her reaction to the words is still mild - she certainly doesn't like hearing him say that, but at the same time she recognizes where they are and what happened between the last time she saw him and now. She came here expecting that he'd likely not be in the best of moods, and all the other things that come along with Edward being in a bad mood. Sometimes he says things that you just can't take so seriously when he's in a bad mood.

Though Arkham had never held a quite enjoyable experience to Edward, he wouldn’t say he was in a bad mood. Yes, he had become irritated over the mishap in China, but he was far too focus on the why and how to care about his current predicament. Not that being contained by Arkham was really a predicament. In Edward’s mind Arkham had always been a temporary moment in his life. It was the place where the player’s reset the board before playing another game, and came up with his future strategies.
He watched Nina take in his words as if she actually understood them, but as far as Edward was concern, she never did fully understand him. Aristotle mentioned that one looking towards the world of the philosopher king could not understand because they have yet to see enlightenment. You cannot realize the images reflected on the cave wall are not reality because your chains prevent you from moving your perception. To Edward he had reached enlightenment. It was why the world deemed him insane. They never would be able to fully understand. No one could understand his perfection because they were flawed.
The statement caused a surprise expression to appear on her face. Was it really so surprising? As his thoughts traveled along the past, he remembered many instances when he came back to his temporary home and seeing her merely seemed like a hassle at the end of the day. He considered it slowly remembering that he had never voiced the opinion to her. He would indulge her in what she needed, and then be done. Towards the end, it started to feel routine what he did for her. He had caught himself in a system, and his OCD nature prevented him from easily breaking it. However, there were times where the boredom was swept under because lust took over. Intimate relation was never a sign of Edward’s feelings.
Her next question caused him to pucker his lips in thought. He hadn’t really considered when because the exhaustion she made him feel was always there. What change was rather his ability to justify the exhaustive feeling. When did that occur? It had happen at some point in China, though he couldn’t deduce the exact day. He supposed he should have realized it occurred when he had full plans to blow up the young Jim Gordon. Blowing up the boy if near her would have drastically hurt her as well, but he hadn’t cared at the time. He hadn’t cared so much that the thought had never even entered his mind. There were more important things to care about.
He fell back into his chair, not enjoying sitting still. “I can’t place an exact date on it, and can’t say I care enough to determine it. It merely is the truth,” he said again. He would much rather be in his cell with out the cuffs. He did not enjoy the constraint of his hands. “Now if that is all, I do have other things to get too,” he commented. It was a strange statement to be coming from an inmate. After all, inmates only had a cell or sessions, but to Edward it was more time that could be used strategizing.

Nina blinks in surprise at that answer, not quite believing it at first. He doesn't care enough to know? He doesn't care? She suddenly leans back in her chair and looks away as a wave of emotion crosses her face, flickering between anger and sadness. Mostly anger. If they were alone she'd be all too happy to explain to him exactly how she feels right now. Instead she takes three obviously forced but deep breaths.
Her eyes go back to him, her feelings back under her control but the anger still easily read in her eyes. However, her voice is remarkably calm as she states, "You're acting like an idiot." Something that she's thought a number of times, off an on, though one might question just how much she meant it even then. Certainly nothing she's said to him before, even remotely. Yet there isn't the slightest sign that she doesn't mean it now.

She turned away from him, but he still caught the emotions on her face. He couldn’t find it surprising that a woman was showing such an emotional response. Women always did allow their emotions to get in the way of their logic. It was the reason why women were by far the easiest riddle to solve, and he constantly used that solution to manipulate them into giving him what he wanted…if he cared to have anything from them.
When their eyes lock, he catches the anger. He suppose hearing the truth would cause her to be angry, but she was had only herself to blame. If she could have provided more entertainment or interest and not be so…hassling then maybe he could provided her with more of his time. Yes, it must be quite disappointing to her to lose such an amazing thing in her life.
Her words slammed into him halting all of his thoughts.
An idiot?
Did she really just use that word in description of him!
His hand went instinctively into a fist on his lap as his eyes narrowed on the woman in front of her. “Hardly,” he remarked with a slight edge to his voice. If anything he was making the smart decision of his life. How many mistakes had he made because of her. “If anything I am finally coming to my senses,” he said bitterly before turning his frown into a smirk, “You really shouldn’t take your anger out on me, dear. It is very unflattering on a woman.”

Nina's eyes close at his first word and her fingers go to her forehead. She can't believe what he's saying. She can't believe what she said! "Ira furor brevis est," she murmurs to herself, taking another deep breath. At the moment, she seems so distracted by the thoughts stewing around in her head that there's every possibility that she didn't even hear the rest of Edward's response.
Whether she did listen or not, there's a long pause after his smirking remarks in which she's obviously searching words. What can she possibly say now? She opens her mouth a few times, but finally she shakes her head and says, "Nemo surdior est quam is qui non audiet." She doesn't look at him now, her eyes going to her hands. She's speaking more to herself, really. And she may not be fully aware that she's shifted to Latin. Does what she's saying really even matter?
(OOC: Translations - First one was 'Anger is a brief insanity', and the second was 'No man is more deaf than he who will not hear'.)

Edward certainly was becoming bored as this meeting continued. His anger was still slightly on edge from the insult, but he just didn’t fully care. He did not have time to deal with an upset woman. Normally when he broke bad news to women and they started acting emotional, he was able to leave without a second thought. Unfortunately, he was stuck in Arkham at the moment. Stuck in this dull conversation that held little value to him. His finger tapped along his uniform as his eyes danced from the woman to the room around him. He didn’t need to see her face to know that his words had hurt her. He did not blame himself for her pain as he once had. If someone cannot accept the truth it is there own fault and terms to come to. He caught the Latin immediately, and smirked at the first statement. It was true, but only a woman would allow her emotions to get the best of them. The second statement made his smirk tilt into a frown.
If she felt that talking with him was pointless then yes, she was correct. He did not have any intent or want to talk about a riddle he had already solved. It was pointless because the conversation was pointless, not necessarily because Edward wasn’t willing to listen. If anything he had listened far too much to her. FAR too much. He had become exhausted of the notion.
Technically, he was not allowed to talk in another language with the people he met. It could mean that they were plotting something. None the less, he commented off handedly, “Sum quod sum.” He watched the orderly in the corner flinch and glance at them, giving a threatening glare.
Edward smirked before stating, “Maiora premunt.” The orderly was about to shift from the wall and shout at him, but he continued in English, ”Therefore, if you have nothing else, I would quite enjoy to end this monotonous time consuming conversation.”
[Translation: Sum quod sum – I am what I am. Maiora premunt – greater things are pressing.]

Nina frowns at his words, trying to steady herself and keep her emotions in check. He may see that and mock her for them and consider her to just be a weak woman because of them, but she considers them to ultimately be a strength - yet another in the long list of things they don't see eye to eye on. She's a deeply passionate woman, and she's not ashamed of that. But in spite of his dismissive statements and apparent hurry to get back to sitting alone in a cell instead of talking to her, she takes a moment to simply figure out if there's anything else that needs to be said here.
Finally, she simply asks, "Can we at least talk about this at a better time?" She's guessing he'll understand that she means when he escapes, since he's making it so abundantly clear how he feels about her being here. And she can't say what she really wants to here, even if Edward would listen. Not without running any greater risk than she already is, anyway.

He couldn’t stop the laughter from escaping at the question. He brings his handcuff hands to cover his mouth as he continued to laugh, bending slightly over in the wheelchair. If she was wasting his time why he was stuck in Arkham, did she not think she would be wasting far more important time when he’s out of Arkham? He doubted he would ever see her again. She was merely a pawn that had been used and taken off the board. It held no value because it had nothing to offer.
He finally managed to get control of himself and sit straighter with a taunting smirk on his face. “Why would I want to do that?” he asked causally with a wave of his cuff hands. “No, I assume I will never see you again.” The idea in a way was freeing. While Edward might be temporarily trapped in Arkham, he felt free of chains that had tied him to this woman.

The laugh causes Nina to flinch slightly, but she manages to take it and wait for the words. Though the words aren't any better. Her face shifts through a few emotions as if trying to work out which to feel: hurt, sadness, anger. But when she finally looks up at him again it's something else. This isn't the first time he's really disappointed her, but it's been awhile since the last time. Probably because she's gotten to know him very well and knows more of what to expect. Partly because she knows it's better to not have any expectations at all. But this? She can honestly say that she expected better from him than this.
"Then I don't take it back," she says with a disappointed frown and a shake of her head, "You are acting like an idiot." And, having said that, she starts to get up to leave. What more is there for either of them to say to each other?

Once again, the words sting and his anger started to rapidly rise. No one calls him an idiot…no one. He obviously is a genius, and he has proven it to Gotham on many occasions. Anyone who thinks otherwise would be dead in a matter of moments. If he wasn’t trapped within these walls, he probably would have killed her with a blink of an eye. However, he couldn’t. He also had no desire to seek her out to give her the punishment she deserved. He was finished. He was finished with dealing with her. If she wants to be angry with him, so be it. It only makes her look emotional and illogical. It makes her look like an idiot, which right now, in Edward’s eyes, is exactly what he saw.
An idiot never worthy of him.
He clinched his teeth to hold back his anger before smiling at his last thought. He watched her start to get up. Her words only reflected poorly on her.
He chuckled softly to himself. “Looks like that’s the end of that riddle,” he muttered under his breath before his usual smirk appears. “Goodbye, Dr. Stenet,” he stated with confidence. His last words he ever plan to speak to her.
