It's just past noon when Hawkgirl gently taps on the back door at Helena's place. As promised, she'd woken up with the sun and has been carefully inspecting Gotham in a search pattern for Question's car. That she's returned before sunset indicates that her hunt was successful. Or, at least, she found a purple '69 GTO Judge, and she assumes that it's the right car. Even in a city as large as Gotham, she has to assume that there's just the one. And where she found it seems to make sense in light of what little Question said about the circumstances of it being missing.
As she waits for an answer, she eyes her surroundings carefully just to make sure that she hasn't been spotted by any of Helena's neighbors. You can never be too careful when it comes to keeping suspicion away from a fellow mask-wearer. She waits a moment before tapping the door again, hoping that someone is home but guessing that they're not exactly used to visitors at the back door. If she were pretty much anyone else, she'd have been able to come in plainclothes, but that doesn't exactly help disguise the fact that she's Hawkgirl from anyone.

Helena was amazed not only that Vic was still sleep when she awoke, but also that he had not stirred at the sound of the knocking on the door. Yet part of her was happy about that; so it seemed that he had needed that rest after all. She wasted no time pulling back the covers and leaving the warmth of both Vic and the blankets. She was awake instantly, it wasn't everyday that someone knocked on your back door and that put her edge. She didn't care what her hair looked like, but she grabbed her bathrobe from where it was hanging on the bedroom door and hastily tied it about her. There was no way she was answering the door in her usual sleep attire—a sports bra and shorts—though soon her sleepwear would become more conservative as a result of the coming winter.
She swiftly was at the backdoor, crossbow in hand; she'd picked it up from the closet as she'd made her way to the backdoor. She lifted the curtain slightly from the window and peered out. That wouldn't be suspicious to whoever it was awaiting her outside; Again, who normally knocked on the back door?! Yet when she saw it was, she unlatched the door and opened it, her relief evident in the smile she offered as she stepped out of the way to let Shayera in and also to place her weapon on the counter.
“Good mornin'.” She greeted, her voice more or less clear, though there was the deep tenor of sleep still resonating in it.

As sensitive as her eyes are, the slight movement of the curtain is instantly spotted, and Hawkgirl feels a bit relieved herself. She hates that feeling of being out in the open where she can't afford to be seen. Then again, she doesn't much like being indoors either; humans make next to nothing to the Thanagarian standard of spaciousness. But she's also good at just grinning and bearing it.
"Afternoon, actually," she replies with a smile as she carefully maneuvers her wings through the narrow doorway - a prime example of something that's never big enough for her taste, "But only just barely." Of course, given what happened last evening she isn't surprised that Huntress was up late. She had to skip a little sleep herself in order to wake up as early as she did, and she didn't have an injured man to take care of first.
She doesn't take any particular notice of the crossbow until Huntress puts it down, and she smiles inwardly at it - like that would have worked on her if she wasn't friendly. But her attention just as quickly shifts to her reason for being here. "I managed to find Question's car," she says as she scans the room for somewhere to sit. Dining chair? Nope. Couch? No. Ah-ha! Barstool - she'd like to thank whichever human had the foresight to invent seating without a back, as her life now would be much less comfortable without that. And she's been awake since sunrise on a quest to find one of Question's most valuable possessions - she deserves to have somewhere to sit now.

Helena glanced at the clock nearby and groaned silently, when the claim that it was just a little after noon was proven true. She didn't detect any condescension in Shayera's tone, however, and so she knew that she understood why she'd slept in so late.
“I thought that's why you were here when I saw it was you, so where did you find it?” She asked as she glanced around, “And you want anything? It may be afternoon, but I think I'm going to make some coffee anyway, even if half of me wants to crawl back in bed. Q's sleeping, thankfully.” She sighed in relief. She was glad to have Shayera around, she may have hidden well, but she was slightly shaken by what had taken place the previous night. She never liked it when Vic was hurt, but with him being shot and losing so much blood, she's even less comforted. It was almost as bad as when Cadmus had kidnapped and tortured him.

"Coffee would be wonderful," Hawkgirl replies, actually now having to fight off a wave of tiredness because her body assumes that catching up on lost sleep might happen now that she's resting. "It's in an alleyway just off the west side Murphy Avenue between fourth and fifth. It's a good spot for it too - I'll bet it's a lot harder to spot from the street than it was from the sky, and it's a low crime area so the locals probably think nothing of it being there."
The Question had said that the woman who'd had it was smart and Hawkgirl is inclined to agree based on that. "The keys have been locked inside of it, and there was a blood stain on the edge of the driver's seat," she adds, "But otherwise it doesn't look any worse for the wear. I didn't see any other signs of whoever was driving it." And after seeing those details, now Hawkgirl is even more curious about exactly what happened. He didn't actually tell her much, and she wasn't going to demand answers from him while he was hurt.

Helena moved to begin brewing the coffee as she listened to Hawkgirl. She had just finished scooping the coffee grounds into the filter, was closing the coffee maker. She flicked it on, and heard as the water started to heat and hiss. She ran a hand through her hair, finding it slightly in tangles, but she had just woken up after all. She moved to stand beside Shayera.
“I'll wait for Q to wake up to go and get the car. I have some shopping to do close to where it is, anyway, so I can just call a cab and be taken to the store and then go get it. Besides if Q woke up and found me gone, he'd freak,” she chuckled.
She leaned against the counter, “Thanks for finding, though, Shayera. I know he'll be happy to have it back.”

"No problem," Hawkgirl says with a smirk, "He seemed more concerned about it than himself when I found him. Literally." And she has a hard time fathoming why. Then again, not only is she a woman but one with no need for such a vehicle. On the other hand, you should see what she's like if her mace or helmet get misplaced.
"Did he tell you anything about what happened?" she asks, "I certainly didn't expect to find him where I did, and especially not in that state." It hasn't exactly been easy for her to keep up with the current happenings of pretty much everyone else, as the FBI's activities have indirectly resulted in a lot more work than usual for her.
"And I prefer Hawkgirl, by the way," she adds, her tone indicating that despite the correction it isn't a big deal to her. Given her reason for being on the planet, the more distance she can keep between herself and who she was before she got here the better.

Helena colored in embarrassment though the tone wasn't angry. She still felt bad, “Sorry about that, I'll remember that,” she turned her stare to the counter top. “Hawkgirl.” She muttered to herself as reminder, but then she straightened.
“He didn't tell me anything I didn't know...well wait,” she looked at Shayera. “Actually, he told me about a girl they have...who can read your mind. I'd heard of her before, of course, but apparently she can tell if you're being deceitful.” She bit her lip. “I didn't want to tell him that that actually really scared me.” She shook her head head. “This is just so stupid. I mean who would think that suddenly we would become the hunted too?” She took a deep breath to calm down.
“I comforted him, but...somethings I said to him...I don't believe them myself. For once I don't know what to do, but I don't want them getting him again. He would turn himself in if he thought it would save me and I don't want him to have to even think of that, but you know, I would do the same for me.” She brought her elbows to balance on the counter and buried her head in her hands.

"A girl?" Hawkgirl repeats with a frown, looking troubled. "I hope that she doesn't try to read my mind," she says mostly to herself before looking back and explaining, "Thanagarian minds can't normally be read, and if someone tries to force it our minds defend themselves. Even J'onn keeps out of my head." And if some telepathic human young enough to be called a 'girl' tried... Well, she can only hope that doesn't happen.
But that concern is quickly laid aside as Huntress talks about her own worries. A frown pulls at her lips and her eyes close as she listens, but her helmet keeps the expressions that would better reveal her thoughts safely out of view. "Both of you need to be very careful," she replies before opening her eyes again, "If any of the rumors I've heard are true then I wouldn't put anything past them. Including making a deal and immediately going back on it - tell Q that. I doubt that a heroic sacrifice would help anything. It's probably better to think of the FBI in its current state like a large and powerful mob family and not like an entity that is actually trying to enforce law." An observation that she's actually a bit reluctant to share since she's aware of how Huntress deals with people like that. But even though she'd actually see some justice in the vigilantes paying for the crimes they commit, good intentions or not, she's not in a hurry to see that happen and especially not the way the FBI seem to want to handle it. So if her tactical insights can be of any help, then she'll share them.
"Also, pay attention to what happens to me. I've been keeping my head down, sticking to regular hero work, and staying out of their way. Helping Q is probably the only thing I've done 'against' them, and I doubt that I was spotted doing it. But I don't exactly make it difficult to find me and I'm not about to hide. Either they've decided to leave me alone, or they simply haven't gotten around to going after me yet. Because if it's the latter... that's when you should really worry - it would mean that nobody is exempt. If they're discriminating that would at least prove it isn't a witch hunt, and would be more inclined to listen to reason," she adds gravely, though she doesn't seem that concerned about her fate even as she talks about it. Probably because it's Thanagarian nature to spit danger in the face. She's right, though - if they go after her that will definitely mean something; her reputation as a hero is as untainted as they come.

“For our sakes, I hope they are discriminating, because yeah, that might mean they'll listen to reason, but I have gut feeling, it's not. I usually follow my gut.” Helena told her gravely. “I'll tell ya the same thing you did me. Be careful, okay?”
She turned to glance at the coffee maker and the pushed from the counter to get two clean mugs from the cupboards as it finished it up. “And you know, I'm putting pulling a fast on us, past those guys either. Q probably already knows that, but I will tell him.” She smiled. She ran her hands through her hair again, trying to get the feeling of being overwhelmed to go away.

Hawkgirl smiles when her advice is handed right back to her. "I will," she replies, "But at the same time I won't. The League needs to know just how far these people are going to go and as soon as possible, and the rhetoric they're throwing around isn't nearly clear enough. I intend to keep myself available so that if they cross that line I'll be the first and everyone else will have that warning - I have a lot less to lose than most of you. I don't have another life, much less the lives of any innocents, resting on keeping my face a secret." It sucks being on a planet with no family and no way to blend in, but at least in this case it works to her advantage.
"Not only that, but if they do arrest me I know that I'll be able to handle it well," she continues, "In fact - I told Superman and I'll tell you too - if I'm arrested I don't intend to try to escape and I don't want to be rescued unless they go so far as to decide to kill me. Because for me to be in custody would underline to everyone just how wrong all of this is and hopefully make it end faster. That would be a heroic sacrifice worth making." And once again it's apparent from her tone and expression that she isn't at all concerned about the possibility of even the worst happening.
Her expression softens a little as she adds, "And in the meantime, know that if you have to cut back a bit to keep yourself safe, I'm doing all I can to take up the slack. You and Q aren't the only ones with that problem, but the city isn't been left completely unprotected."

At Shayera's first statements, Helena felt a deep pity of the woman. She was aware that Hawkgirl wasn't from this planet and thus had no one to worry about, not like her for Vic and vice-versa. Yet she understood that it was a good thing for her, for them, though she wished it wasn't needed to be taken advantage of. “Thank you.” She said, though, to let Hawkgirl know that she was in her own way protecting them and helping. She turned the coffeemaker off and withheld saying anything else until she placed a full mug of coffee in front of the winged-woman.
“Just tell me if you need anymore.” She nodded hospitably before replying to the rest of Hawkgirl's words. “I'll remember that and pass it along to Q. I just hope that you don't need to make such a sacrifice. But I'm not too hopeful, 'cause you're right. The rhetoric is confusing and Q was saving an innocent girl...He'd not be captured if he didn't believe it was worth it and you know he'd not save some criminal.” She shook her head and tentatively blew on her coffee.
“And thanks again, but I don't know if this means I'm cutting back. I mean I don't want Q to worry about me, but I'm not the type to run. He knows that, he knows I have every intention to still patrol and protect this city, FBI or not.”

If Hawkgirl knew that she was being pitied, she'd be offended. She actually does have people to worry about - but they're all vigilantes or heroes themselves and only connected to her in that capacity. And she's simply doing something a bit risky that she's better able to do than most because it will be immeasurably helpful and possibly life-saving to many others. But that's something she does already as a matter of course every time she anything heroic.
So she simply nods to the thanks, scooping up the cup of coffee and sipping it as she listens. And she nods as Huntress talks about continuing her patrols, "I know - that's why I told you to be careful. When I said 'cut back', I meant by being more cautious, not by stopping - it's better for you to hold back a bit and stay free than to risk getting caught. So patrol, yes, but keep yourself out of their hands. No repeats of what happened to Q; he was lucky." Her tone is very serious but she tries to keep it from sounding like she's telling a child who probably won't listen to behave themselves - even if that's what it feels like to her. While she really isn't worried about herself, she is very worried about what could happen should any of the vigilantes get caught and find themselves unable to escape.

Helena just smiled at the serious tone. “Hey, I knew what you meant and I plan to. I know I can be stubborn sometimes, but that was before I had something to lose. I have Q now. I need to stay safe for his sake, not only do I not want him to get hurt because I get caught, but I don't want to put him in danger in any other way either.” She explained and her voice too got serious by the end. “I'm not going to go to rushing into things, I'll be cautious because I don't want anything like what happened to Q happening to anyone.”

Hawkgirl allows herself to be comforted by the reassurances. But nothing is going to really stop making her worry until this mess is over with and the true cost of it is certain. Then again, all worry tends to do is make her work harder. "Glad to hear it," she says, though she isn't about to believe that either of them are about to give up completely on being reckless. But she lets the seriousness ease off a bit as she adds, "Do you think you can talk Q into doing the same, or do you need me to help you tie him to something?"
