“And Warren has that affect on people,” Lyssa shrugged. “I'll take your word for it that she doesn't normally behave like that, but Warren could make anyone walk out of the room and he also has a habit of disturbing people.” She took another sip of her coffee as she came to the next logical conclusion. She sat her mug on the table again.
“Your ward reads minds, Warren's mind if the subject matter he talks about is any indication...Yeah, I don't think that would be pleasant to see or hear. So I can't blame her for leaving, though I understand your concern, but if he wasn't acting that he did...Well, I'd be worried about him the same as you about Force.”

Agent Stevens pauses in the consumption of her yogurt as Lyssa makes the comment that she didn't make, mildly impressed. Not everyone can so easily recognize that the mental aspect has to be taken into consideration.
"But that's the thing," she says when Lyssa finishes, "If he was thinking about - what was it? - cannibalism and evisceration like he threatened to, that probably wouldn't do it. To say that Force is desensitized would be putting it mildly; it's not like everyone's thoughts suddenly become G-rated just because she's listening to them. And we've run into everything - the insane, murderers, even pedophiles. It's unfortunate, perhaps, but nothing like that seems to phase her anymore. So if his thoughts bothered her then the subject matter was probably something more... well, normal."
She frowns, shaking her head a little. She'd like for it to have been something as simple as overly gruesome thoughts, but besides the odds being against it she's also sure it would be something that Phoebe would want to discuss with her. "She just hasn't been herself since that vigilante escaped," she adds as she collects another spoonful of yogurt.

“Force is ten,” Lyssa said levelly. “And if my information isn't incorrect, this is her first actual mission. So his thoughts and even anything akin to them should affect her, because the facts plain and simple are that she did just begin and you aren't comfortable with such things unless you've doing a long time, I mean more than a year.” She shook her head. “And if you're talking about dealing with such riff-raff before PROTECT...then...I'm even more displeased.” She said with a disgusted tone.
“A child shouldn't be witness to such things. I was angry when I found that out about Warren, but it was too late for him then.” She frowned deeply. “How dare you allow her be around such deranged minds, powers or not. She's a child, and she has the mental capacity of one, intellect or not.”
She picked up her mug, part of her wanted to stay because she saw nothing more than child being taken advantage of and her handler was allowing it. Perhaps her morals could be strained—she herself had to order the deaths of innocents, which included children—but this was different. The other part screamed that it was morning. If the fellow agent wanted to be offended, then so be it. She stood up.
“I think it might be best I leave, before this goes any further.”

Agent Stevens goes very quiet as the other woman expresses her disapproval, her eyes going to her yogurt and staying there until she's done. It's a defense mechanism in a way - yet another person telling her that she's doing things all wrong. Though this time she's being blamed for things she has pretty much no control over - isn't that fun and special?
So she patiently waits it out, and it isn't until Lyssa stands that she answers, and then her voice is quiet and holds no sign of offense. "Warren was already trained when you met him, wasn't he?" she asks rhetorically, "Exactly how much say do you think I had in Force's training?" Based on her frown, the answer is "not much".
She sighs as she says, "I know how old she is. But do the big-wigs who have never bothered to so much as meet her as they shipped her off from one facility to another her whole life? How about the scientists who care more about what she can do than who she is, all with their own opinion about what's best for their little weapon? I pulled every string for her I could only to find that more often than not someone else had more, so in the end all I've really been able to do for her is to see her through it; she's reasonably happy with her life, and she's mentally stable - that's what I've done for her." And if Lyssa wants to say that wasn't good enough, then Agent Stevens is all too happy to pay no more attention to that than is required to roll her eyes.

Lyssa turned to her silently with an understanding look, she glanced down momentarily at the floor beneath her, she said nothing that answered the other woman's question. She just met her eyes.
“I was too late to help Warren, and I care deeply for him but I can't help him now, can't heal what he's been through...and Force was younger than him when she started training. This place, for us, maybe it's not so bad, but for the children they manipulate and take and teach to do what she and Warren do...I'm always appalled by it. Always.”
She then just turned again to leave.

Though Agent Stevens meets Lyssa's gaze as she talks, she says nothing in response. What's left to say? Instead, sighs quietly to herself as she frowns at the remaining bits of her breakfast and turns her attention to finish them.
Meanwhile, back in her room, Phoebe frowns to herself as she ponders the conversation that she just 'eavesdropped' on. Technically, none of her guardian's thoughts were new, but it's been awhile since the last time Phoebe's caught her thinking them - long enough that she's gained somewhat of a different perspective. It troubles her in a way that it didn't before that Agent Stevens doesn't fully agree with her life. She hardly objects to it as much as the Question did when he talked about it, but... It's so confusing!
And the worst part of all of these questions rolling about it her mind is that she's put herself into the position of needing to keep them to herself. If she were to express her doubts to Agent Stevens, then her guardian would wonder where these new ideas are coming from. And if she asked someone else and Agent Stevens found out about it, then she'd be in the same problem. Suddenly she has all of these secret thoughts to keep contained, which is a difficult thing given how close her bond is with Agent Stevens. She knows that the woman is already aware that she's keeping something from her - she only hopes that it doesn't get any worse.
She sighs when she senses that Agent Stevens has finished her breakfast and starts heading back. When she sees Phoebe awake then she'll have to get up and get moving, work another probably difficult day. She doesn't really feel like working today, but she wants the fuss that would result if she refused even less. When did her life get so complicated?
